chee's daughter Chee's daughter Chee's daughter is a story written by Juanita Player and Siyowin Miller, the character Chee undergoes a dramatic change when he loses his daughter. The Navaho tribe is located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. In the tribe there are certain laws such as, if a mother dies then her parents take control over her children. Which happens in this story called Chee's daughter. Most indians in the tribe believe in the land very strongly. Even though Chee feels he has to leave the reservation from the pain of losing his daughter, he instead decides to win back his daughter.
Chee has doubt about staying on the land after he finds out how the in-laws use the tribal law. Such as, Old Man Fat using Little one to make money from the tourists for him and his wife. AS the little girl was taken from his arms, Chee felt heart broken. Chee thought his wisdom wsa not good enough to bring his daughter back in his life again. Feeling battered from not having little one, his daughter, kept Chee from doing duties like walking the sheep. The land is begining to depopulate by the land dying, and its causes are that chee is not caring for the land you take care of the land and it will take care of you (pg. 81).
Chee then regains is faith in getting little one back, and returns to gain conscious about caring for the land. Chee begins to make plans in getting his daughter back, he regains his faith in the land. After committing his work to earth he plants crops such as onions, carrots, squash, pumpkins, corn, which he could not wait for them to harvest. Also he started to walk the sheep and take care of take care of them again. Chee began to grow crops in the summer to bring back the loss of the land. He grew a crop of corn, to take to his in-laws hoping to win back little one.
In all the greedy, up tight grandfather Old Man Fat accepts the offer of corn and Chee walks away in joy with his daughter. Although Chee returns to mother earth after the argument with the in-laws, he returns with his daughter little one and beliefs of the Native American law. Bibliography no
