Nobility is a term used for honorable people that are looked up to by others because of their actions and respected reputations. Huck Finn obtains this trait as he runs into difficult situations in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn. After Huck escapes from the hold of society and his drunkard pap, he encounters one problem after the other. Along side with him is a runaway slave named Jim. Huck has to try to save his friend from being caught while also trying to find himself a new life. In his journey, the decisions he makes at every turn enables readers to easily term him as noble.
Although some readers may see Huck only as a little boy who likes to fool around, in reality, he is the most noble character in the novel because he is trustworthy and he makes wise In the beginning of the novel, Huck was seen as a boy who just enjoyed having fun with his friends. Some readers may also see him through this view throughout the novel. While Huck is playing with his friends, one boy, Tom Sawyer, decides to make a gang that would terrorize the town and go after... Spanish merchants and rich A-rab's... in Cave-Hollow with two hundred elephants and six hundred camels... (22).
This was really just a game of pretend, which shows Huck's kiddish side. Also, Huck enjoyed playing around with peoples minds. For example, after Huck and Jim got separated from each other on the river, Huck was able to find him which made Jim extremely happy and grateful that Huck was alive. Huck then denies ever being separated when he says, Well, this is too many for me, Jim. I hand see no fog, nor islands, nor no troubles, nor nothing. I been sitting here talking to you all night till you went to sleep about ten minutes ago, and I reckon I done the same (88).
Playing this trick on Jim shows that Huck does not take many situations seriously. Even during this dreadful predicament, Huck takes humor out of it and did not think about what Jim felt. During the journey, Jim had to trust Huck with his life and Huck had to take full responsibility. Anyone would want to catch Jim to collect the reward and now it was up to Huck to keep him safe. Because of Huck's trustworthy nature, Jim was kept away from harm, yet when danger did come, Huck was able to get him out. At one point on the trip, Huck felt bad that Jim had run away from his owner, Miss Watson.
She was the sister of the lady that had taken Huck in as her own son. Huck's conscience had gotten the best of him as it said to him, What had poor Miss Watson done to you that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word? What did that poor old woman do to you that you could treat her so mean (91). Huck felt that he should turn Jim in because Miss Watson did not deserve to have her slave taken away from her. Yet when some white folks asked Huck if Jim was a runaway slave, he said that it was actually his pap who was sick. Huck knew Jim had trusted him with his life and that Jim felt that he was his only friend, so Huck did not want to do anything to jeopardize that.
Another time, after Jim did get caught, Huck felt he would go to hell if he helped a runaway slave. Yet he knew how much Jim wanted his freedom so he decided, All right, then, Ill go to hell... (207). In Huck's eyes, he is risking a great punishment to save his friend. Jim has entrusted Huck with his life, and Huck does not want to let him down. This shows his trustworthy nature and how he can be considered noble. Throughout the novel, Huck encounters numerous problems where he had to make wise and quick decisions.
Huck had made a lot of money by catching robbers with Tom, but when he learned that his pap was alive, he knew his father would come after him and his money. Therefore, he went straight to Judge Thatchers house and said, I dont want to spend it. I dont want it at all- nor the six thousand, number. I want you to take it; I want to give it to you- the six thousand and all (25). Because Huck made this quick and wise decision, pap was not able to get his hands on the money or do any harm with it. Another wise decision that Huck made was when he knew about how two men, the king and the duke, were scamming money out of a dead man by acting like they were his brothers.
Huck felt bad because they were also taking away money from the dead mans nieces. He thought to himself, ... this is another one that Im letting him rob her of her money... I felt so ornery and low down and mean that I says to myself, my minds made up; Ill have that money for them or bust (171). Huck decides to tell one of the nieces, Mary Jane, because he felt sorry them and knew it was the right thing to do.
Although Huck is a kid at heart, he makes decisions in the best interest of others. He puts others before himself in his decisions to make sure everything will turn out for the best. This shows how honorable Huck truly is because he cares for others and makes he wise decisions for the toughest problems. In The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck may be seen as a childish kid, but he is also very noble because he is trustworthy and he makes wise decisions. On his journey with Jim, Huck became responsible for Jims life so that he does not get harmed. Therefore, Jim trusts his life with Huck, who he considers his only friend.
Although at times Huck thought of turning Jim in for being a runaway slave, he knew he could not disappoint him. Huck faced many problems and always tried to solve them by thinking about what was best for the people around him. For this reason, he knew the right thing to do when he found out some girls were being scammed was to tell them what was happening.
