The Catcher in the Rye Does Holden need outside influence from other characters in the book to grow up? The answer is a definite yes. Within Catcher in the Rye J. D. Salinger uses Holden Caulfield to depict a confused teen who, through interactions with other characters, grows and matures. Holden, the main character has many different types of relationships with men and women throughout the book.

Some relationships are more short-lived than others, and some are more intimate. Most importantly, his relationships with men, women and his family always relate back to him and reveal something about himself. The relationships with men, although generally shorter and more violent, reveal a lot of Holden's character and how he differs from the average guy. His relationship with women is as equally revealing about him. Holden's family shows two extremes in the case of relationships, wanting to be nothing like his father and everything like his little sister. Holden's character is shaped and defined more clearly to the reader as the book progresses.

Overall these interactions and conflicts with men and women help Holden grow. When Holden Caulfield says he has problems with women he means just this, The thing is, most of the time when you are coming pretty close to doing it with a girl she keeps telling you to stop. The trouble with me is, I stop. Most guys dont. (Pg. 92) In the opinion of anyone who is not a sex offender, this is by no means an actual problem. However, from the viewpoint of Holden, that is the only reason his quasi-friend Stradlater has had sex and he hasnt. When Holden interacts with women, it is easy to tell that he definitely takes all the women in the book a lot differently than the men.

Whether its having lower expectations from them or a higher degree of innocence on their part, Holden gives them a lot more room for error and a lot more pity. For instance this is shown when Holden orders the prostitute and then tells her to go back and not have sex with him Ive had a rough night. Honest to God. Ill pay you and all, but do you mind very much if we dont do it?

Do you mind very much? (Pg. 96). We can see from this quote how he really feels about women. His honesty is expressed to women throughout the book, whether it is to a prostitute, whom he chats with, or more likely his kid sister. Holden definitely sees most women as not phony. When Holden does meet with a woman who acts phony, he doesnt really know how to react to it, and sometimes gets mad, like when he is talking with Sally Hayes. Always quick to apologize, Holden has a strange outlook on women based on his mood.

Holden can see them one minute as fun to be around, and then next minute as completely ignorant fools that he wouldnt want to be around, even if someone paid him, Cmon, lets get out of here You give me a royal pain in the ass, if you want to know the truth. (Pg. 133). Holden views his sister as the ultimate picture of innocence and would do anything to please her. Of all the characters that help Holden grow, his sister helps him the most. She teaches him that risks have to be taken, just as surely as he must eventually grow up. Holden, in general, gets along better with women than with men. Whether he sees women as people who he can open up to, or he is just more comfortable around them, his personality agrees with the females in the book better.

In contrast to women however Holden has a very different relationship with men. With men, Holden almost always senses hypocrisy and phoniness in everything they say. He acts a lot more impulsive when he is around them. Even though Holden gets into two fights in about a period of 3 days, he claims to be a pacifist (it also may be relevant that women are the cause for both of these fights). It is clear he does not get along as well with men as he does with women. The person, whom he looked up to in high school, Luce said to him I refuse to answer any typical Caulfield questions tonight.

When in hell are you going to grow up? (Pg. 146) Clearly more blunt in his comments Luce was very forthcoming in revealing what he thought was Holden problem. His roommate Stradlater on the other hand, aggravated Holden by talking very nonchalantly about having sex with a girl he really liked. Holden just plainly doesnt mix well with other guys and shows it. This could be why he is depressed all of the time, thinking, Am I that much like them? it is when he concludes that he is, that much different that Holden finally becomes happy, or at least accepts his fate of having to grow up. Holden's opinion of the guys in the book is low Every time you mention some guy thats strictly a bastard very mean, or very conceited and all the girl, shell tell you he has an inferiority complex.

Maybe he has but that still doesnt keep him from being a bastard. But none the less however much he doesnt get along with them, Holden is forced to interact with men and like women it forces him to put up with them and in a sense psychologically grow and become more readily able to fit into the rest of the world Overall Holden grows a lot from his interactions with other characters and through them he can relate certain aspects from these event and characters back to himself. His admiration for the innocence of his little sister, or his detest for the crap that some of his teachers tell him all stem from other characters Life is a game boy. Life is a game that one plats according to the rules. Yes sir I know its is game my ass. Some game.

If you get on the side where all the hot shots are, then its a game. All of these let Holden relate back to himself, whether as a model to be more like, or to avoid being a certain way, Holden learns and grows from all of his interactions. A perfect example of his growth is when he sees his sister reaching for the gold ring. He does nothing, relating that sometimes its just best to take the risks in life.

Or the way he feels about his father and how he is sure that he does not want to turn out like him because he has a different view of success, Well a lawyer, like daddy and all Lawyers are alright I guess, but it doesnt appeal to me All you do is make a lot of dough and play gold and play bridge and buy cars and drink Martinis and look like a hot shot. He expresses his opinions about everyone and analyses the way they act as either phony or real, ignorant or intelligent. Holden needs these characters to interact with in order to grow into an adult. And although he doesnt necessarily want to grow up in the end realizes he has to weather he wants to or not. So because Holden does interact with these people, and he does relate them to himself, they are important in the plot.

They add conflict and resolution, but they also are important to Holden's growth as a character. They show how he deals with conflict, what he is going to have to do to really get by in the world and how he will do that. The characters force him to change and eventually grow up. His fist reaction towards this is to desire a static life or life standing still. Eventually through deep thought and interaction with his little sister he accepts change his need to grow up.

Holden needs these characters in his life to force him into maturity. Submitted By the SadClownThere is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another which states that this has already happened.
