In today s society, people have no time for anything. People are always in a rush especially during their lunch breaks. Since most businesses only give their employees thirty to forty-five minutes to eat, they do not have time to go to a true restaurant. So they go to the next best thing, McDonald s. In Robin Leidner s essay, Rethinking Questions of Control, he describes how McDonald s has redesigned interactive service work through automation and routinizing of job designs. In order for McDonald s to accommodate its customers with the quickest service possible, they had to routinize every job that the worker has to do.

Routinizing is when Workers repeat a set of relatively simple tasks over and over again, with little opportunity for decision-making (Leidner 441). So as Braverman puts it, [McDonald s] jobs have been deskilled (Leidner 441). Who are these low wage service workers? Are they Generation Xers who have given up? Or are they failure of Drucker s Knowledge Society?

Since McDonald s has routinized each possible aspect of every job, they are able to pay low wages to their workers. There are only a few types of people who accept this job. Teenagers who have dropped out of high school will work at McDonald s because it has automatized every part of the job requiring that person to possess very little skill. Without a high school diploma, they are not qualified for any highly skillful tasks, so McDonald s is on place where they would be hired. The workers agreed that there was little call for them to use their judgment on the job, since there were rules about virtually everything (Leidner 445). Retired senior citizens also tend to apply to McDonald s.

It is not uncommon to see a senior citizen taking customers orders or cleaning tables. This is a result of the decrease in social security payments. A few years ago, retired senior citizens were not allowed to re-enter the work force after they have declared their retirement. If they did, they would lose their social security payments. In recent years, many laws have been passed to allow seniors to work and still get social security. High school dropouts and retired senior citizens make up a large amount of McDonald s employees, but the vast majority of the employees are minorities.

The reason why blacks and minorities hold jobs similar to McDonald s can be explained in Drucker s Knowledge Society. Drucker states that: More and more blacks have moved into blue-collar unionized mass production industry that is, into jobs paying middle-class and upper-class wages while requiring neither education nor skill (Drucker 230). Drucker says that his society will require formal education in order to succeed. Thus leaving the blacks and other minorities behind. Without a formal education or skill, minorities are somewhat forced into these low wage workforces. Does this mean that our nation is headed for a society of hamburger servers?

Its quite possible. Generation Xers are another example of a low wage worker who are at a loss. The main reason why Xers are most likely to work at McDonald s is again a result of their lack of education. Circumstances are far worse for the roughly sixty-seven percent of the Xers aged twenty-five to thirty-four who don t have a college degree (Halstead 356). Without a college degree, they have very little chance of finding a decent paying job. So low wage jobs that involve very little to no skill like McDonald s are basically their only choice to make a source of income.

It s also stated, Xers may well be the first generation whose lifetime earnings will be less than their parents (Halstead 356). This again is another result of the failures that Drucker s knowledge society has. People don t try to make themselves failures; it s the society in which they live that makes them failures. The people who live in Drucker s society become failures for two reasons.

The first reason being they don t have the proper resources available to keep up with today s society. The second is the lack of opportunity society provides for the people. As a result of these disadvantages, people will lose the feeling of hope because they know that life has more to offer them than what they have now. This is when people will turn to religion to find the hope that their everyday lives are lacking. For example, Xers interest in religion is on the rise.

For There are numerous indications that Xersmany of whom grew up without a formal religion are actively seeking for a moral compass to guide their lives (Halstead 360). God will play a major role in their lives because as Armstrong says, Without the idea of God there is not absolute meaning, truth, or morality: ethics becomes simply a question of taste, a mood or a whim (77). With God present in these people s lives, a sense of hope is restored in them. And with that hope, it will drive them to better themselves, their lives, and not to feel as if they are a failure of society.
