Romeo and Juliet Lust or love; that is the question that is evident in William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet. There are many different opinions on this topic, but I have settled on one, which I am sure is correct. Romeo was in love with Juliet. Shakespeare did a masterful job of representing true love as he described the lengths the two lovers went through to be together. I truly believe it was love at first sight when they first met at Lord Capulets party. The balcony scene supports my thesis because they decided to get married while talking there.
Their love was so strong they agreed to marry on the same night they had met. Romeo killed himself because he thought that Juliet had died, his heart was broken, so in his haste he killed himself. This is a prime example of true love because Romeo thought his life was not worth living without his beloved Juliet. For these reasons I believe Romeo was deeply in love with Juliet.
Romeos family the Montague's were fighting with Juliets family the Capulets. Why would a man risk his life sneaking up to a balcony if he were not truly in love with the girl on the balcony? Romeo knew that if he was caught he would be killed, but his love for Juliet was so strong he braved the balcony walls and Juliets kinsmen to see her. Romeo and Juliet belonged to two warring families, who taught their children to hate members from their enemy's family.
Only true love could break the hate that the Capulets and Montague's had for each other. Romeo and Juliet did this, although in the process they took their own lives. I believe Shakespeare did an excellent job of representing true love. Unfortunately the lovers were unable to think rationally in their great love for each other. Romeo was so deeply in love with Juliet that his mind was unable to make rational decisions when he discovered that she was supposedly dead. In the heat of the moment he bought poison that he later used to commit suicide.
Juliet too, was also irrational in her decision making because of her divine love for Romeo. She stabbed herself when she discovered him dead at her side. The lovers killed themselves because their spouse had supposedly died they showed that they could not live without the other, thus showing their incredible love for each other. Romeo and Juliet were willing to leave their families, their friends, and their homes behind in the fair city of Verona so they could make their own life together and live happily ever after. This couple was so madly in love they were willing to leave everything they had ever known behind, so they could be together. Even though Juliets plan never reached Romeo I know that he would have gladly carried through her plan.
Only their true and divine love would cause a young girl like Juliet to fake her death and runaway from her home so she could be with Romeo. This is one of the many examples of their true love. Shakespeare's representation of the true love between Romeo and Juliet was incredible. I was deeply moved while reading this play as their love for each other was truly amazing. I found it very ironic that in life they could not be together, but in death they shall not part.
