What theme does is it empowers a novel or story. There is a reoccurring theme throughout the play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Williams uses the symbolism of the movies, the fire escape, and the nailed coffin to illustrate his theme that the harshness of reality often leads to escape. These symbols all support the theme of escape and freedom. The fire escape is always an escape for Tom when he wanted time to himself or just to relax from the household and warehouse life in which bothered him.

One of the main reasons why he goes to the fire escape was to get away from Amanda s constant bickering at him. Amanda: You re not excused from the table. Tom: I m getting a cigarette. [Tom rises and walks toward the fire escape] (7). In this quote, Tennessee Williams uses the fire escape to show how Tom finds his freedom and escape from his home life. He uses this escape because he cannot stand Amanda s directions on how to eat his meal.

This is significant because it shows how much Tom dislikes how his mother wants to rule his life. Tom also uses the fire escape as a getaway to smoke and talk about personal issues with Jim. Tom: [He lights a cigarette and goes over to the fire escape door. ] Jim: Where are you going? Tom: I m going out on the terrace. (59). Tom is using the fire escape to relax from work and the household. The fire escape is the only place in the apartment where Tom can go and find freedom because it is his place to get away from Amanda.

In this scene, Tom also uses the fire escape to talk about private things in which he doesn t want Laura or Amanda to know about. I m planning to change I m tired of the movies and I am about to move Mother is not acquainted with my plans! (60 - 2). This quote by Tom shows that he is using the fire escape to discuss personal issues about his future plans to leave Laura and Amanda. Tom is speaking to Jim out on the fire escape because he doesn t want Amanda to know. These statements show that Tom uses the fire escape to escape and have his own freedom by giving him a way to leave or just a place to be by himself. Through this Tom shows the reader that he is a man after a dream and will stand at nothing to see his dreams come true.

Another symbol that Tennessee Williams uses in the play is the coffin with the nails. The coffin symbolizes the life of Tom living with his family and the nails represent Amanda and Laura keeping him from leaving the life he hates. Tom uses the magic trick of the coffin to get a point across to Laura. We nailed him into a coffin and he got out of the coffin without removing one nail. (27). This quote shows that Tom wonders how the magician did it because he is in awe.

But Tom wants to get his point across to Laura about what he wants to do about his situation with Amanda and that is leaving his current life behind and pursuing his dreams. There is a trick that would come in handy for me get me out of this two-by-four situation. (27). Tom is trying to get away from his problems, which is his home life and his job at the warehouse. He s showing Laura his true feelings about the situation and showing her that he wants to leave. Then he shows Laura how impossible it would be to leave without hurting someone.

You know it don t take much intelligence to get yourself into a nailed-up coffin, Laura. But who in hell ever got himself out of one without removing one nail? (27). This quote shows how Tom is in wonder at how he could possibly have freedom from his life without hurting the people around him. Tom looks at this situation as almost impossible. But these quotes are all support in showing that the coffin symbolizes freedom and escape in the play. Tom is an adventurer, but has no adventure in his life except for his constant trips to the movies and this symbol is another way Tom escapes.

The movies are Tom s way of escape from his life of work and nagging. Amanda: Where are you going? Tom: I m going to the movies? (23). This is Tom after an argument with Amanda.

He uses the movies as his escape from dealing with his problem with Amanda. When Amanda and Tom finally talk about the situation he explains why he escapes to the movies so often. Amanda: But Tom you go to the movies entirely too much! Tom: I like a lot of adventure. (33) Tom shows that he wants to get away from his everyday life and have some adventure by fulfilling his dreams. But he can t at the moment so he goes to the movies to get away from his problems, which are his boring job at the warehouse and this hard home life.

These are just a few examples at how Tom uses the movies as an escape. Williams uses the symbolism of the movies, the fire escape, and the nailed coffin to illustrate his theme that the harshness of reality often leads to the desire of escape. Tom shows throughout the play the way he escapes his everyday life, which he doesn t like. All of these ways include the fire escape, the coffin with the nails, and the movies. Tom s everyday life consists of working at the warehouse and living at home.

This is what Tom is running from and by leaving to the movies or going out on the fire escape is how he gets away from the problems in his life. So all of these are examples of a reoccurring theme of escape and freedom throughout the play.
