Buffalo Soldiers Introduction In October 1492, explorer, Christopher Columbus mistakenly found the new continent, which the United States of America today. The place he wished to sail to is India by using the Northeast Passage, which does not exist. When he reached the new continent, he thought he already India. When he met the native, he called them the Indians. Consequently, the Native American were Red Indian till today.
The discovered of new continent had bring changes to the whole world. This is because the Old World, Europe need land to produce food. Therefore, the new land was used as a place to produced food such as sugar. Since the European already found land but no labors to work in those sugar plantation. At first, the natives were used in those plantations. They were not treated same as a human, they were being tortured if they refused to work.
The natives served as slave ended when the priest from Spain, Bartolome de Las Casas said that they are human and should be treated as human. He suggested that Africans is not completely human so they should be the slaves. Consequently, many Africans were brought to the new land to be slave. The movie Amistad had clearly showed us how the African were treated and brought to the New World. In the between the year 1550 until 1850, there were about 10 million African people were brought to the New World as indenture servant.
Other Africans who had a deal with the Europeans captured them as an exchange commodity. Then those African who were been captured and sent to the new continent to generate those sugar plantation. When the sugar is ready, it will be sent to Europe for the Europeans to consume. About 180, 000 African-Americans joined the Union for the struggle of their freedom. They were divided into 163 unit.
At first, the white Americans did not believed that the Africans could fight in the battle. In order to prove that they are wrong, a group of African-Americans of the first Kansas Colored Volunteers attacked the confederates at the island of Mound, Missouri. Although the African-Americans fight joined the Union, they did not treated equally. For instance, they only received $ 10. 00 a month plus $ 3. 50 for the clothing allowance.
However, the unequal treatment ended when the Congress pass the law that Colored Soldiers should have equal pay in June 15, 1864. In 1865, the North gained the victory, and the slavery was abolished. Buffalo Soldiers After the end of the Civil War, on 28 July 1866 the congress approve two new troops under the Section 3 of an Act of Congress entitled An Act to increase and fix the Military Peace Establishment of the United States the congress had authorized the formation of two regiments of cavalry the 9 th and the 10 th. These two troops were formed of African-Americans. These African-Americans were charged with responsible for escorting settlers, cattle herds, and railroad crews form the Native Americans. The 9 th Cavalry Regiments were conducted campaigns against American Indian tribe at Greenville, Louisiana and 10 th Cavalry Regiments also conducted campaigns against American Indian tribes on a western frontier at Leavenworth, Kansas.
Throughout the era of the Indian Wars, approximately twenty percent of the U. S. Cavalry troopers were Black, and they fought over 177 engagements. The combat prowess, bravery, tenaciousness, and looks on the battlefield inspired the Indians to call them Buffalo Soldiers. Many Indians believe the name symbolized the Native Americans respect for the Buffalo Soldiers bravery and valor.
Buffalo Soldiers, down through the years, have worn the name with pride. There are many changes since the days of the Buffalo Soldiers, including the integration of all-military servicemen and women. However, the stories of the Buffalo Soldiers remain one of unsurpassed courage and patriotism, and will be forever a significant part of the history of America.
