BRAVE NEW WORLD ASSIGNMENT In the novel Brave New World many events occurred that makes it difficult to decide whether John or Bernard Marx had more importance as being the protagonist or antagonist to help develop the plot. Both characters can be considered the protagonist as well as the antagonist. John and Bernard Marx, being the protagonists helped developed the main theme of selfishness throughout the novel. The reasons why selfishness is the dominant theme developed by these two main characters is because they both wanted the society in the New World to be the way they wanted it to be, they used each other to become socially accepted and they effected others in their search of a better life. The first example of selfishness being the dominant theme developed by John and Bernard is they both wanted the society in the New World to be exactly the way they thought it should be like. Bernard wanted everyone who lived in the New World to be the way he was.

Bernard thought that everyone should think more freely and be more open-minded. He felt that every Alpha-plus should not be so perfect for he wasn t. Bernard thought that every character trait that he possessed, everyone else should posses them as well. Similarly, John felt that the New World was to conformed and orderly. He felt that there were too many restrictions in this new society. He wanted the New World to be exactly the way he imagined it to be in his mind while he was living on the Savage Reservation.

By John and Bernard wanting the society of the New World to be the way they wanted, it shows how these two protagonists were being selfish. The theme of selfishness in the novel can also be seen through the protagonists when they used each other to become accepted in the New World society. Bernard was always considered an outcast by society because of his physical appearance as well as his way of thinking. Once the John the Savage came into Bernard s life, Bernard realized that his society would love to see the Savage, especially after they realize that the Savage is the Director s illegitimate son. By thinking of this, Bernard would become very popular for he was the one who discovered this great treasure. Bernard would act like the Savage s agent.

Bernard used the Savage for popularity; the Savage also used Bernard. When John met Bernard, who was from the New World, John realized that if he played his cards correctly he could get Bernard to take him and his mother to the New World. It was always John dream to leave the horrible Savage Reservation and live in the wonderful New World that he had heard so many great things about. Both John and Bernard had ulterior motives when they became friends. By the two having these motives, the reader o the novel can easily identify the selfishness these to characters are portraying. The final example of the theme of selfishness being displayed by the two protagonists is the way in which they treat others in their quest for their personal happiness.

Both John and Bernard treated Lenina horribly throughout the novel. Even though Lenina was only interested in a good time with the two men she was effected immensely by their exploits. When Bernard first took Lenina to the Savage Reservation it was obvious that she was very scared and constantly needed soma to calm her down. Also, when Bernard took Lenina over the English Channel in his helicopter, he tried to make Lenina think differently about things and this confused her immensely. John also effected Lenina s life but not as much as he affected his mothers.

He thought it would be best for his mother to leave the Savage Reservation however she had grown accustomed to living in the primitive society of the Reservation. Once she was taken out of this society and put into the society of the New World she was socially unaccepted. People thought she looked hideous and they often made fun of her. She could not put up with the stress of her new life so she was given soma to help assist in her death. The way John and Bernard affected these two women was very selfish. They only cared about what was best for them.

They didn t think about the effects they would cause on these women. By these two men acting this way it shows how the theme of selfishness carried throughout the novel. Selfishness is just one of the many themes that is prominent throughout the novel. However, this theme can easily be linked to both of the main protagonists, and as the novel continues, the antagonists.

The motives that they possessed in their lived showed how selfish they were acting. They only cared about themselves. They wanted a better life and on their journey to this new life they effected themselves as well as the other people in their lives.
