Bob Dylan The Man The Myth The Legend By Nick DeSantis Few Musicians in the History of Rock and Roll have influenced popular Music as much as Bob Dylan. However too fully understand Bob Dylan s music you must first understand his life story. Bob Dylan s real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman and he was born on May 24, 1941 in Duluth Minnesota. His father, a man by the name of Abe worked at Standard Oil Company in their hometown of Duluth (bobdylanbiography. 8 k. com). In 1947 at the age of six, Bob Zimmerman and his family moved from the Duluth to a small Minnesota town called Hibbing.

His parents moved to Hibbing because at the time (Hibbing) like many other small towns, felt the optimism, prosperity, and conformism (that is, conformity to a conservative, mainstream image) that had followed world war II (Richardson p. 22). At the early age of ten, young Robert began writing poems. Just like his creative adulthood, as a child he explored the realms of creativity by writing poetry. On one mothers day Bob wrote, My dear mother, I hope that you will never grow old and gray, so that all the people in the world will say: Hello, young lady, Happy Mother s Day (Richardson p. 24) However poetry was just the beginning.

In his early teen years Robert taught himself how to play the rudimentary piano and guitar. It was soon after this that he became infatuated with other musical artists such as Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis (bobdylanbiography. 8 k. com). According to his 1959 Hibbing High School year book his goal was to Join Little Richard. It was obvious to all that Dylan loved music. After graduating in 1959 Robert Zimmerman set out on his own.

He moved to Fargo North Dakota and began working as a busboy in a small caf called the Red Apple. It was during this time that Bob began paying close attention to Folk singers such as Judy Collins and Jesse Fuller, whom he met around 1960 (Richardson p. 26). At the time Dylan like musicians such as Fuller and Collins because they were known to sing about social issues such as the civil rights movement. Dylan was certainly drawn in by this aspect of the music. In 1959 Dylan again made another move, except this time it was to an institution of higher learning. He began going to the University of Minnesota in the fall.

Because of the big city atmosphere at the University of Minnesota, it opened Dylan s eyes to the beginning of contemporary rock and roll. He listened to artist such as Hank Williams, Robert Johnson and Woody Guthrie (bobdylanbiography. 8 k. com). Before Bob Dylan could finish college he could not resist another calling, New York City. After dropping out of college he wanted to go to New York for two reasons.

The first was to meet one of his idles Woody Guthrie, who at the time was in the hospital with a rare hereditary disease of the nervous system. The second reason was to become a very large part of the Greenwich Village s bordering folk-music scene. Dylan succeeded in both of his goals. In a biography written by Clinton Heylin titled Bob Dylan Behind The Shades Dylan states It was my first week in New York It s about somebody who has come to the end of one road, knows there s another road there but doesn t exactly know where it is, and knows he can t go back on this one road It s got all kinds of thoughts in my head, all about teachers in school, all about hitchhikers around the country I d never been to New York before, and I m still carrying these memories with me so I decided to write it all down (Heylin p. 93). For Dylan New York was more than a spot on the map, it meant the beginning of something huge.

After just a short time in New York City Dylan went to the hospital and played folk music for an audience of one (Woody). He also became a regular at several of the local taverns and Caf s. When he began playing in the Caf s in and around Greenwich Village it did not take long before he began to get noticed. In 1961 Dylan s talent began to spread not only from the inner-circles of the folk music world but also the world community. It was an article by Robert Shelton in the New York Times that set him apart from the rest. In Shelton s piece he writes, Dylan is bursting at the seems with talent (bobdylanbiography. 8 k.

com). It was not long after this piece that Robert Zimmerman met John Hammond. Hammond, a Columbia Records executive, signed Dylan for his first record deal. In early 1962 His first album was released and his stardom began. As much as his first album was praised for its musical creativity no one was prepared for the success of his next album titled Free Heylin Bob Dylan.

The Album which was released in 1963 contained two of the sixties biggest anthems, Blowin in the Wind and A Hard Rain s A Gonna Fall. It was also during this time that Robert Zimmerman had his name legally changed to Bob Dylan. This marked the end of the rural Minnesota life and validated the new New York, New York life in which he had worked so hard to create (Richardson p. 36). Much like Judy Collins and Jesse Fuller Bob Dylan s first two folk albums attacked social issues.

Songs like Blowin in the Wind made society re-evaluate their own lives and search for something better (Richardson p. 37). In Dylan s song Masters of War he openly criticized politicians and those who support war as masters of war. Through his music anyone could tell that he was passionate about his views. The Album Bob Dylan Freewheelin touch people who were not normally into folk because of his image, unusual sound, and fresh convictions they could relate too. Between the years of 1962 and 1966 Bob Dylan was at the top of his game. He came out with well-known song such as Tambourine Man and Like a Rolling Stone.

It was also during this time that Dylan began experimenting with technology. The Electric Guitar and Amplifier were just at their infancy stages but he was willing to push the limits again by trying them out. The pay off was big. By early 1965 the young artist had played a big part in creating the term folk-rock, which was a cross between folk music and rock and roll. After several years of stardom Bob Dylan s life had become very stressful. At age twenty-five routinely told that he was the greatest singer of all time.

The stress from trying to be perfect all of the time was starting to get to him. The pressures were unbelievable, said Dylan during an interview with a biographer named Anthony Scaduto. On July 29, 1966 a motorcycle accident brought his career to a screeching halt (Richardson p. 61). No one except Bob, his family, and god know exactly what happened. But two things were for sure; he nearly died and it turned into a blessing in disguise.

Because of the accident, Dylan had a chance to rest with his family in Woodstock New York and reevaluate his career and life. For the next two years He remained in and around his home in Woodstock while the world of music blossomed everywhere (Richardson p. 63). It was also during this time that the hippie movement was taking place. Once Dylan recuperated from the accident he was a new man. He continued his life as a rock star and went on several tours. However as he grew older so did his music.

In 1980 s his music began to take a different path. This path was religion. In Febuary of 1980 won a Grammy for a song titled You Got To Love Somebody. The Song, as did many of his at the time, played on Christian values and Christian beliefs (Richardson p. 98).

Today Bob Dylan is a man who can adapt his music to the changing times. He continues to tour and work to make his music the best that it can be. He cares about his fans and sometimes makes appearance in small, low-key places to prove this (Richardson p. 120). Before the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jefferson s Airplane, or heck even NSYNC, Bob Dylan was here. His sneering scratchy voice shaped American popular music as we know it today. Not only did he show the world that it is O.

K to do creative things such as using the electric guitar, but he gave American Culture the spark that ignited the sixties revolution. As he lives today he continues today, much like what he did in the past, Dylan continues to inspire with his words. In an interview in 1994 I believe he summed up motivation in one statement. Dylan Said, Yeah, (it s easy to say) it s all behind me, that there s no more. But you want to say there might be a small chance that something up there will surpass whatever you did. Everybody works in the shadow of what they ve previously done.

But you have to over come that (Heylin p. 440).
