Smoking The biggest legal killer in the world, smoking kills at least 60 million people each year. Cigarette smoking is the most significant cause of lung cancer and also the leading cause of death in both men and women. Cigarette smoking is accountable for at least one-third of the deaths of cancer annually in the united states. Cigarette smoking is an addiction that can be prevented. However, once a person inhales a cigarette it becomes an addiction that can cause lung cancer, heart disease, and other health effects which I think people should be aware of. Smoking involves inhaling and absorbing nicotine into the bloodstream and traveling it to the brain which causes an addictive effect.

Every time the smoker's serum nicotine level falls below the minimum limit, he / she experiences drug withdraw which makes him / her to become tense, anxious, and irritable. This feeling of dependency on nicotine makes the smoker to continue to smoke, therefore those who continue to smoke will continue to be in a constant battle of maintaining their serum nicotine level. Nevertheless, it is best to never start smoking because once a puff is inhaled, you will become addicted to nicotine and continue to crave for it. People commonly start smoking when they were teenagers. Some teenagers start smoking because they want to be rebellious, however the most common reason is peer pressure. Teenagers start smoking because they think it will give them a better image like being cooler, more attractive, or more popular.

However, some people say they smoke because they are unhappy, unsatisfied, nervous, bored, anxious, lonely, tired or just frustrated without their cigarette. Other reasons are that cigarette keep them thin, help think better, or they are more sociable while smoking. On the contrary, cigarette smoking can cause serious health problems. Health problems such as symptoms, diseases, and cancer which can be fatal. What is the point of smoking? Do they want to have lung cancer?

Do they want to cough, have headaches and high blood pressure? Do they want to inhale poisons or suffer on heart disease? Do they want to make, not just themselves but their houses, cars, clothes and breath stink? Do they want to harm not just themselves but others?

Scientific research has proven that if the smoke that is exhaled by a smoker is inhaled by a person (close by) the damage can be 100 times as bad compared to the general harm for the smoker! Here is an example for it: My aunt went to the doctor because she was very ill, the doctor said that she should stop smoking, my aunt was very surprised and said that she had never smoked, astonished too, the doctor asked if somebody in the family smoked, she responded no, he asked if somebody smoked where she worked, and she told him that nearly everybody did. Which was the reason why she was so ill. I personally have asked various smokers why they smoke, and every single one of them had no appropriate answer, some of them said that it's good against stress, which is a lame excuse, simply because there are a lot healthier ways to get rid of stress and due to the fact that you can work more effectively under stress.

Advertisements are one of the main reasons why people begin to smoke. In the ads the women are beautiful and slim, the men a strong and healthy and there is no smoke coming either from the cigarettes or from their mouths. Cigarette companies claim not to target young kids, which is not true. Do they show people coughing with stained teeth, wrinkled faces, and a large cloud of smoke hovering over their heads? No.

Instead they have figures like Joe Camel. Some children are as familiar with Joe Camel as they are with Mickey Mouse! In the first 4 years that the Camel ads utilized Joe Camel, smokers under 18 raised from 1 % to as much as 30 %! ! ! The cigarette companies know that children like humor and cartoons, and Joe Camel has both. The six American cigarette companies together spend three billion dollars annually for advertising. The reason for this?

They need to pull younger kids into it to replace the smokers that have died or quit. Smoking at an early age increases the risk of lung cancer, lot's of teenagers that start smoking have no idea of the consequences. They do know that: "It's bad for your health. " but that's not the worst, the smoke contains about 1000 chemicals which are surely not healthy, in addition it is very expensive, a report in the year 2002 from the USA Center for Disease Control found that smoking kills 440, 000 Americans and results in US$ 150 billion economic losses each year besides it takes so much of your energy, makes you weak and there is nothing cool about any of these things, neither does it have anything to do with courage. It's a petty that the effects of smoking are not seen as obvious on the outside of the body, because if you could see them better then, lots of people especially teenagers wouldn't even start smoking, sconce they are still young and are very considered about their appearance. There are also cases which involve peer pressure, where you " re forced to smoke because everybody else does it and it's being grown up. Teenagers especially can be very easily influenced when they have conflicts with their parents, since they think that their parents don't understand them etc.

Tragically there are also cases in which parents smoke because their children are twice as likely to become smokers then children with non smoking parent. From my point of view people that smoke should really be helped, which is not easy, I've told friends of mine over a million times to stop smoking but it never works, I feel so sorry for them, they say, yes I've stopped smoking, the next day you see them smoking at the buss top, and I say, I thought you stopped smoking, then they say, well I haven't had one since ages... bla bla bla. There should be a lot stricter rules and regulations about smoking, if you want to start smoking you should have to go to some guy who tells you all the effects in extreme detail with a camera view of the lungs of a non smoker and then of a smoker etc. I'm sure that these kind of things would make people think a lot more about it before starting to smoke. What I also find really good are the adds on TV against smoking (Although the Austrian ones really "suck") What really does annoy me a lot is when I'm sitting in the underground or in the bus and a smoker comes and sits next to me, because I've got a very sensitive nose... = ) but they smell like rotten, moldy sandwiches in the bottom of the refrigerator.

The famous film star Yul Brynner, who died of lung cancer from smoking, made a series of advertisements to be shown after his death where he simply said "DON'T SMOKE!" and to my opinion you should heed this excellent advice in the strongest possible way. It may save your life. Bibliography: Ayanian JZ, Cleary PD. Perceived risks of heart disease and cancer among cigarette smokers.
