... lot to say is not seen as informative; instead she is seen as opinionated and obnoxious. To go along with that when a woman feels passionate about something she is talking about and is expressing this passion, she then is categorized as bitchy, pushy or as it being that time of the month because she is so hostile about what she is saying. A woman is never seen as devoted or right about a topic she speaks. Why is that? I do have a lot to say and for once I want to be taken seriously.

I want people to judge me on what I am saying and debate with me about the topic at hand. I do not want people to judge and debate what I say just because I am a woman that does have an opinion and that is right. I want to be truly listened to but not ignored. A second similarity that we share with the women of Afghanistan is that we too are told what should they wear and what they should not wear. The women of the United States are not specifically told not to show their ankles, wear shoes that click or wear makeup. We are not told to cover up with a back.

However, there is a certain way that society has accepted a woman to look and expects women to appear like that. Women are indirectly told what to where through dress codes, which were accepted by society to be proper attire for a certain occasion. For example women in business should were business suits. They should not appear sexy; instead they should appear to be conservative and professional looking. Why should women conform to that? A woman should wear as much or as little as she feels good about herself in.

Appearance also applies to makeup. It is seen that women wear makeup to make themselves pretty. And who is it that they make themselves pretty for? Whom do they spend hours of changing for? No they are not doing this for themselves they are doing this for men, for acceptance by men. They are such ignorant creatures that do most of their decision-making on looks, especially when it comes to women.

Through this, women do not try to present themselves to others as they are, but instead present themselves in disguise with makeup and the socially accepted clothes. Women do not want to stand out and proclaim their individuality, as they should. They want to conform because if they stand out then they become gossip. They are seen as sluttish and as not respecting themselves. The way a woman dresses does not say that she does not respect herself, if anything; I think the way a woman dresses relays how comfortable she is with herself and her body. Therefore, if you have a perfect stomach or rolls galore a shirt exposing that should only say one thing: I feel comfortable with my body and I want to show that to everyone.

And if you do not like that then that is just your tough luck. All women should have this mentality. They should proclaim who they are not who they want everyone to think they are. Women should not conform to society and laws of submission. Women are people with feelings that deserve to live like everyone else out there, free from what others think or expect of them. They should live up to what each one expects from her.

A woman should dress and put on makeup for her in order to express what kind of person is inside. Another problem for the women of Afghanistan is the fact that many of them are widows. The Taliban has forced many of the men to fight wars in the northern part of Afghanistan so that the Taliban can expand their power. Regrettably, the women get word that their husbands are dead. The one person who could put food on the table by working is now gone, and the women are banned from working.

Begging has be a tactic that the widows of Afghanistan have used just so they can try to feed their children. Another remedy for the women of Afghanistan's financial depression is prostitution. Some women are joining what is called a Qala or brothel where most of the prostitution takes place. The woman only receives about 40 percent of her income, and the 60 percent is split between her pimp (Qala dar) and the old women who is manager of the brothel (Qala Kharabati). The brothels location is always changing because if the wrong person catches them, these people can be stoned to death. According to an RAWA (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan) article printed in 1999, members of the Taliban often engage in sexual acts with these prostitutes and walk out right after the act is done and dont even pay.

According to that same article, on one occasion a Taliban member asked for anal sex, the prostitute refused, and later that day, that member brought many of the local police to arrest all of the workers in the brothel. The only thing that saved the people was the fact that they had several fake IDs, and they used them for different scenarios of police interaction. RAWA has conducted studies about prostitution, and many of the rape cases that take place in Afghanistan. There are health problems that evolve due to these acts. STDs is one of them. Women have been infected with chancre sores, syphilis and even AIDS.

Another problem is pregnancy. The Taliban opposes any type of birth control so many of the women who get pregnant are not married and they are forced to get illegal abortions. These abortions are usually not done properly and in many cases, women have died or become very ill. They cannot seek medical attention because under the Taliban rule a woman cannot be seen by a doctor because almost all of them are males. Therefore, as one can see the women of Afghanistan are really in a no win situation. The Taliban for fornication can kill them, when in fact members of the Taliban engage in the rapes and sexual acts.

They can be killed by the person who is performing the abortion, because the procedure is not being taken care of properly. Finally yet importantly, these women can be killed by their own families. In what is called honor killings, some family members actually kill their daughters, sisters, nieces, and cousins because they feel that because these females have been raped or engaged in a sexual act in or outside of marriage that they bring dishonor to their tribe or community. Although it does not seem to be as prevalent in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan's next-door neighbor and origins of the Taliban, is heavily involved in honor killings. Several groups like Amnesty International, a human rights organization, have reported honor killings in many of the Arabic countries and are trying their best to get justice for these women that die at the hands of their family members. Unfortunately, the struggle to stop this injustice against women is a long and hard process, especially when it seems as if the people in these counties are somewhat brainwashed in what they hold as true.

Many of the men and even women who condone these acts feel that it says in the Koran that women, who commit adultery, should be killed. So it is extremely hard to fight something like that when it seems as if many of these people have no sense of what natural law is, and that includes no one should kill another. Other organizations like RAWA are trying their best to reopen many of the hospitals that have been closed down since the Taliban took over the government. Meena, the founder of RAWA was assassinated in her struggle to try to let the women of Afghanistan and Pakistan to have a voice.

Although she is no longer able to fight for her people, her vision still lives on. Many members of RAWA receive funding by speaking at functions, selling books about their struggle. Some have even gone as far as making collections of music and poetry about the issues that they face. American Jewish World Service Project Partner and Creating Hope international have been working closely together and have put together money for educating the women of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Even though it is illegal that still has not kept these organizations from doing what they know is right. Another organization that has been fixed on stopping this discrimination against women is WAPPP (Women and Public Policy).

Their goal is to promote the awareness of gender biases and the ways in which it affects foreign policy and even religion. So as anyone can see although, there is a lot of playing God going on in Afghanistan, and it seems as if the Taliban government is not going anywhere. People and organizations are taking action for these women. We may not see the results as fast as we want, but there is progress. One last way in which the women of the United States conform to submissive thinking is through the careers they choose for themselves. Without considering statistics and just basing this on common perception, most women in the United States are teachers.

Why is it that they are not plumbers or electricians? It is very unusual to find women in such professions or crafts, because they are seen as masculine careers. Why is this so? Why does everything in life have to be categorized into the two categories of masculine and feminine? Why can nothing just be all a common category of both? The reason behind this is that women are and always will be seen as below men.

They will never be seen as equals and, therefore, segregation of everything in life is necessary. Women are not and will not be encouraged to take on masculine professions. If anything, women will be discouraged from trying to show men that they can do the same things as them. I believe that women are equals of men and can do anything they dream to do. Women can be electricians, plumbers, racecar drivers, construction workers, even the President. Instead of being discouraged, women should be encouraged.
