German Finch, what can you say about him? Well, you can say that he is a great character. German Finch, otherwise known as Jem, was a key figure in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. This co-star of the book is in his teenage years and was mentioned in the first paragraph of the book. This type of literary action is usually used to signify a special role in the story.

He was introduced as Scout Finch's brother who broke his arm at an early age in his life. He is also introduced as liking sports at an earl age. This tells us that he is very outgoing. This is important because throughout the story Jem and Scout get into trouble involving being physically fit.

For example, when German jumped the fence to get away from the brother of Boo Radley, its a good thing he was physically fit otherwise he could have ripped a little more than just his pants. In addition, being physically fit, I think, made Scout want to look up to Jem even more. Seeing as Scout enjoys physical activities herself, having an older relative in her immediate family gives her more to do. In that way, the story involves the two children in their adventures, not just Scout. Jem, I think, is portrayed perfectly to be a brother to Scout.

Jem acts in ways and does things that older brothers do to their smaller, weaker siblings, in this case a sister. He acts like he can do anything and act he wants to her. In some parts of the story, Jem is loving, kind, and gentle with the younger Scout. Since Scout was the youngest, he was not as experienced in life as his brother Jam; however, he possesses all the necessary qualities of a positive hero. Jem and Dill get more acquainted with each other very fast.

Their mischievous acts get them both a kick, but to Jem, it is just not enough. Jem now becomes a devious scoundrel of a rebel! His relationship with Scout takes a downward spiral because of this. He begins to try and annoy her every chance he gets. He is obnoxious to her and even down right frightening. The rebellious ego of his fills even more with time.

Do you remember the tree house incident? If not, it was when he was staying in the tree house all day. One time, Jem, Dill, and Scout run into the Radley property, and get in serious trouble. Jem rips his pants on the fence of the Radley premises and I feel that gave him an even larger amount of air to fill his ego with.

I feel this way because since then, Jem starts pointing out how girlish Scout is. He also stops playing with her and goes off to play with Dill instead of his sister. Jem begins shows a little shine of good, though, during the following chapters. I like to term this as The Jem Reformation, because it is Jems reformation from dark to light. The Jem Reformation begins at the point when Dill leaves Maycomb County. From then on, he leaves his ego filled head behind and starts to really mature.

This maturing process takes a while, but when it starts, it picks up quickly. It is possible to say that Jam was a typical teenage boy. He had fears, feelings, and one of the greatest attitudes I have heard of in a fictional character. Whoever thought up Jem Scout, whether it be Harper Lee, Truman Capote, or whoever, I wish to thank them for there journey into this boy. German Finch is a real literary hero. Atticus Finch is a perfect example of a role model in every way of his person: as a lawyer, as a father and as a person in general.

Throughout the novel there are so many examples of this that they fill this masterpiece with lessons to be learned and morals that one should live by. Firstly, Atticus proved himself being good lawyer. He was so competent and able in his work that all the people in Maycomb County would consult him on the writing of their Last Will and Testament. Well, he can make somebody's will so airtight cant nobody meddle with it, Miss Made told Jem and Scout (95). In addition, Atticus was extremely good at cross-examining witnesses. He had what could almost be called a sixth sense when it involved judging a persons character and deciding whether that person is lying.

During Tom Robinsons trial, Atticus knew that the Ewells were lying and he brought out the circumstantial evidence to indicate this; therefore proving Toms innocence. (169 - 190) Moreover, Atticus was a respectful lawyer. In the courtroom, he showed respect to everyone despite his or her reputation or appearance. Secondly, Atticus is almost the perfect example of what a father should be. He teaches his children, Jem and Scout, the morals to live life by. He teaches them to stand up for what they believe in, for example.

Atticus was a firm believer in justice and equality for all men. He knew that Tom Robinson was innocent and that he was only on trial because it was the word of a colored man versus the word of a white man. In addition, Atticus spends quality time with his children. He spent the whole night with Jem just to make sure that he was going to be okay. Atticus is a superlative role model for the way a person should act, speak and live life. He was non-racist and non-prejudice.

In addition to being peaceful, Atticus Finch was a very humble man in his abilities. Also, the most important part of Atticus Finch's character, his respectful nature. Every time he would walk past Mrs. Duboses he would gallantly say Good evening, Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening. (104) Over and above that, Atticus respected the fact that it was the Great Depression and that most people could not afford legal fees.

Therefore Atticus just let him pay his legal fees anyway he could; with hickory nuts, stove wood and with any other little things he could give. Atticus had respect for everyone and everything, whether or not their reputation was good. In retrospect, Atticus is a valiant example of three people woven into one; he is a competent and skillful lawyer, a loving father, and an excellent and admirable person to look up to. Harper Lee has created one fine human being to play the character to play Atticus Finch. There is no doubt; Atticus Finch is as much a masterpiece of a man as To Kill a Mockingbird is a literary work of art.
