The Mask In the movie, The Mask Jim Carrey is playing diffident bank teller Stanley Ipkiss. The movie revolves around Stanley, who is living quite lonely life. Stanley spends his free time with his dog Milo and likes to watch cartoons. He is quite a kind man, who probably cannot do anything wrong to other person. Even when Stanley thinks of suicide, he still remains a warm-hearted person.

Stanley attempts to rescue what he thinks to be a drowning person floating down the river, but discovers the body being simply flotsam and the face wooden mask. The mask contains the imprisoned spirit of Loki, the God of mischief. When Stanley puts the mask on, it makes possible for Ipkiss to get into his dreams, wishes, and fantasies. When wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes out of control. When Ipkiss is out of control, he becomes a bank-robber, lady-killer, time bomb and target of gangsters and police officers. When Stanley is wearing the mask, he makes a decision that he is just a superhero and that nothing can stop him pursuing his aim.

Tina Carlyle was the only thing Ipkiss was interested in. Stanley has learned that the mask has a power to change him into absolutely different person. His personality becomes changed so much that Ipkiss is not anymore a shy, unassuming man, but a criminal. With the help of the mask, Ipkiss can do whatever he wants to. Physically, there seems to be little that he cannot do, from twisting his body into a pretzel to taking a bullet in the chest or forming a tommy gun out of a balloon.

The Mask is a comedy, main goal of which is to entertain the viewer. Kids like to watch such kind of movies; however, when dealing with The Mask some people claim that children should not be allowed to watch the movie. The Mask is rated PG- 13, while many believe that due to violence portrayed in the movie it should be rated R. What are the reasons for this? Is not The Mask the right movie for children to watch? The Mask is a wonderful movie for the whole family to watch.

However, it is evident that such a fantasy movie can have negative consequences on children. Even though actions of Ipkiss wearing the mask do not have to be justified, still too much violence in the movie makes many people to believe that The Mask should be rated R. Besides violence, sexual content of the movie does not make it the best one for children to acquire information from. The language in the movie could also be better. It is quite tame, especially if to consider PG- 13 rating.

Kids by watching this movie also can take fantasy as reality and could start thinking about being as indestructible as Ipkiss was while wearing the mask. Ipkiss was shot many times, but the bullets did not hurt him, while other characters in the movie are easily murdered. Unfortunately, many kids believe in such a superhero, but in my opinion, at the age of 13 they are able to distinguish between myth and reality. What concerns most parents is sex as one of the main topic of the comedy. Nudity in the movie is present probably all the time when shooting is not on the screen.

Ipkiss simply cannot keep his hands off any female that walks by. I do not think that such a behavior can teach something positive to a thirteen-year-old boy. We should not forget that The Mask is just comedy. Besides, since Jim Carrey, who is so loved by children, is perceived more as a comic hero than just some crazy superhero, whom he played. Today, The Mask is definitely not the worst and scariest movie kids have watched, therefore, I think that there is no need to rate this movie R, even though there is violence and sexual content in it.
