Social, ethical, and spiritual values involved in the art of writing Julia Alvarez, William Stafford and many more are the ones who belong to this modern era of writers. They have managed to take the skill of writing to know and an imaginable height, which earlier seemed too far-fetched to be, fantasies even. They have tried on building upon and developing the social, ethical, and spiritual values involved in the art writing. That has used writing in a very different context and has succeeded in a lot of ways.

It is not only about what you think or what you write but about what you are delivering and how you are impacting the mind of the reader are. Writing is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public. (Winston Churchill) It was people like these and other like Harper Lee, who have showed and illustrated via example that this form of writing can have a positive influence on beliefs, value, and social behavior of the people.

The reason why so few good books are written is that so few people who can write know anything. (Lewis 1991) Writing is an art and a world in itself. It is how one uses this art. This is not something which influences the way children think but also how people are made to think about their morals, ethics, and beliefs as a society and as individuals. A peoples literature is the great textbook for real knowledge of them. The writings of the day show the quality of the people as no historical reconstruction can. - Edith Hamilton. Surprisingly enough none of these writers have English as their mother tongue yet they have written such wonderful pieces of work and their novels have been acclaimed as laurels of literary works.

What makes their work so special? To begin with these were the first people to come up with the idea of art writing. Just like we have paintings and artwork similarly these people showed that what a painter can achieve via a painting they can do the same through a pen. They showed that a true writer has the capability to express what he wants and his ideas and whatever he has witnessed beforehand can be put into words. But moreover all their work has a moral and a guiding principle.

It is their concern for the good and welfare of the people, which has won them a lot of accolades. That is why it is often referred to as welfare pieces of work. Anne McCaughey has well-said in her article Writing is the heart and soul of my being. It is the means through which I bring my stories to life. There is nothing like putting words on a page and knowing that they will summon certain emotions and reactions from the reader. In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaneys translation of Beowulf. (Anne) So the big question looming over the mind of many a reader is that can the art writing influence and improve the ethical, moral and other principles of persons life?

The answer is most definitely yes. What these people have said time and again is that nothing good can stay aloof for long and ultimately finds its way back to the people. There is first the literature of knowledge, and secondly, the literature of power. The function of the first is -- to teach; the function of the second is- to move, the first is a rudder, the second an oar or a sail.

The first speaks to the mere discursive understanding; the second speaks ultimately, it may happen, to the higher understanding or reason, but always through affections of pleasure and sympathy. - Thomas De Quincey, Essays on the Poets- Alexander Pope. They have experienced some good times in their lives and have tried to put all of that into writing and by God have succeeded in doing so. The whole point boils down to the single issue that doing something and learning from experience is a separate issue but if you try you can learn the same thing second hand. These literary works have a lot of messages and they show that not all is impossible. That is what makes them all the more important and allows us the breathing space to think that maybe if targeted to the right audience it can do wonders.

The advice in Kenneth Henson's book, Writing for Professional Publication: Keys to Academic and Business Success, is definitely write on. This book gives a pretty good clue of various writing styles and how they can be used to generate business. Now we came to the point when any kind of activities including the writing has to have connection to business because otherwise this would be difficult to maintain the activity. Henson stresses simple, direct and clear writing when school leaders seek to publish articles about their work in professional journals. Superintendents can use this book to learn how to write more effectively, master the art of writing and get their writing published. Packed with practical tips gathered over the authors many years of writing and teaching professionals how to write, this would be a valuable addition to the professionals library.

Writing is an empowering activity, yet it is hard work and requires self-discipline. In addition to the books 13 chapters, which deal with style, research and organization of articles, Henson has written 16 excellent appendices to help the prospective writer succeed at getting his or her work published. These expand on the main ideas through the use of examples and models. (Henson) Let us have a brief look at the techniques used in the art of writing by most of the prospective writers of the world of all the times. The art of literature stands apart from among its sisters, because the material in which the literary artist works is the dialect of life; hence, on the one hand, a strange freshness and immediacy of address to the public mind, which is ready prepared to understand it; but hence, on the other, a singular limitation. The sister arts enjoy the use of a plastic and ductile material, like the modelers clay; literature alone is condemned to work in mosaic with finite and quite rigid words. (Stephenson) Now the first merit which attracts in the pages of a good writer, or the talk of a brilliant conversationalist, is the apt choice and contrast of the words employed. It is, indeed, a strange art to take these blocks, rudely conceived for the purpose of the market or the bar, and by tact of application touch them to the finest meanings and distinctions, restore to them their primal energy, wittily shift them to another issue, or make of them a drum to rouse the passions.

But though this form of merit is without doubt the most sensible and seizing, it is far from being equally present in all writers. The effect of words in Shakespeare, their singular justice, significance, and poetic charm, is different, indeed, from the effect of words in Addison or Fielding. Or, to take an example nearer home, the words in Carlyle seem electrified into energy of lineament, like the faces of men furiously moved; whilst the words in Macaulay, apt enough to convey his meaning, harmonious enough in sound, yet glide from the memory like undistinguished elements in a general effect. But the first class of writers has no monopoly of literary merit. There is a sense in which Addison is superior to Carlyle; a sense in which Cicero is better than Tacitus, in which Voltaire excels Montaigne: it certainly lies not in the choice of words; it lies not in the interest or value of the matter; it lies not in force of intellect, of poetry, or of humor.

The three first are but infants to the three second; and yet each, in a particular point of literary art, excels his superior in the whole. (Stephenson) We may now briefly enumerate the elements of style. We have, peculiar to the prose writer, the task of keeping his phrases large, rhythmical, and pleasing to the ear, without ever allowing them to fall into the strictly metrical measurements. This is actually a difficult task to create a descent piece of writing that would satisfy both the reader and the viewer of all the writings. We begin to see now what an intricate affair is any perfect passage; how many faculties, whether of taste or pure reason, must be held upon the stretch to make it; and why, when it is made, it should afford us so complete a pleasure. From the arrangement of according letters, which is altogether arabesque and sensual, up to the architecture of the elegant and pregnant sentence, which is a vigorous act of the pure intellect, there is scarce a faculty in man but has been exercised. We need not wonder, then, if perfect sentences are rare, and perfect pages rarer. (Stephenson) Bibliography: R.
