Two for the Road, film review Contemporary film making process is rather different than it was back in 1967. In this report we are going to have a closer look at one of the films produced back than. We are going to have a visual analysis of the film called Two for the Road. Two for the Road is a pretty good movie produced in 1967 by the prominent producer and director Stanley Donen. This film is different from many other Hollywood films due to the special usage of referencing or homage in relationship to other films used by the directors. The editing style of the film is definitely somewhat controversial, because it does not really comply with the editing styles of films of the time period.

This film gave people a link between the older and the contemporary film making process. We see the story of two people that love each other and have their long way through life. Two for the Road is a witty, sardonic and slick look at marriage that is distinguished by great performances by Albert Finney as Mark Wallace, a young architect, and Audrey Hepburn, as Joanna, his wife. Directed with great style and humor by Stanley Donen, who is best known for Singin In The Rain the movie constantly switches back and forth in many flashbacks with many trick transitions that are cute but also rather poignantly stream-of-consciousness. (Stephenson) The usage of referencing to other Hollywood films appears to be the real enrichment and texturing the narrative of the film. This is because the main heroes of the movie are represented as similar heroes of the Hollywood movies for example like the Bonny and Click, they just dont perform the explicit actions. We see many events that show the relationships between the two people.

It is greatly achieved by the use of the sights of nature and the nature is such a wonderful thing during the period of the year spring. The life of the main characters of the film is often being compared and contrasted with many other people. This is being achieved by the use of metaphors and comparisons. As portrayed by Finney, the architect is a great bluster of machismo but not without charm and ultimately deep affection and love. As portrayed by Hepburn, his wife is patient but coy and full of humor. We learn through one of the flashbacks that the young architect originally had high hopes for making a trip with one of Joanna's classmates, played with gleeful lust by Jacqueline Bisset, but had to settle for Hepburn when the classmate came down with chicken pox.

The film was shot on location in Europe and Hepburn's costumes ran the full gamut of 1960 s styles. While Hepburn has always been fashionable, she has never been more beautiful, especially in scenes in which her hair is long. Not a classic beauty, her smile has never been more radiant. (Stephenson) This is another example of the usage of the kind of a film making technique called the style. The final shot of the gangster at the audience shows the disrespect of the audience by the author and also it is implied that the audience supposedly is shocked by the motion picture. Here I mean that the audience is so thrilled and inspired by the movie that the directors decided to enrich this feeling for the audience by this shooting. The performances of Finney and Hepburn may well be the finest of their careers.

Finney is tempestuous, goofy, flirtatious, sullen, hurt, warm and happy. Hepburn is a shy gamin, a coquette, a frolic, an adventuress, a re contrite lover, and a loving and bemused wife. We see the contrast of the two different at some point and very similar at the other people that have lots of venture through the film. Two for the Road, however, has always been the most popular of this trio of films about marriage on the rocks, as Hepburn and Finney give winning performances of partners who love each other but arent sure theyre in love anymore. Screenwriter and novelist Frederic Raphael's sparkling screenplay gives the movie zest and poignancy. The film skillfully negotiates the tightrope between frothy romantic comedy and melodramatic marriage. This is not the bitter pill of Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? but the bittersweet maturing relationship between two very vibrant and strong personalities. Finney's love for Hepburn explodes through the screen, and of course, she is remarkable. Now this film is graded by the viewers as a must to see, and a must to have for the library. (Stephenson) The film uses various film devices such as the special effects and the tremendous usage of sound in it for the purpose of maintaining the coherent logic. When it first was released it actually had not much success.

This is due to the social and economical problems that people of the time period faced. Later on the views and the overall economical and socio cultural situation changed and people became more serious and consequently started to favor those kinds of motion pictures. Now, the several decades after its release the film is very successful and as it was already stated considered to be a desirable piece of entertainment for home library. The film covers the couples courtship and 12 years of marriage and is clever and perceptive in its presentation of married life ever after.

The issue of modernism is clearly established through the use of the narrative and the representation of the lifestyles of the heroes, and their view into the future. The only drawback in the film is the couples insufferable road trip with one of the architects old flames, played by Eleanor Bron, and her husband, played by William Daniels and their obnoxious young daughter. Bron overacts and Daniels role is a caricature of political correctness / fastidiousness . Bron and Daniels let their daughter run riot and at one point Bron tells Hepburn that the daughter senses she does not like her and that she should woo her. When at long last, Hepburn woos her the audience is most grateful. The roadtrip with the couple probably seemed a good idea on paper but the couple is so horrible and the sequence so long that it pains the audience.

The performance of their roles by the actors is magnificent, because they really represent the people of the time era with their problems and the solutions of the problems. We clearly can see that the issue of love that is distinguished in their relationships help them overcome some of the greatest disadvantages that they face on their way. The camera operators did a good job on the film as well as the other members of the crew. The movements of the camera is pretty smooth and slow, thus the viewer is able to become enriched with this kind and slim atmosphere that the film creates. The editing style of the film is great because the operator and the editor did such a good job. The use of musical compositions in the film support the idea of it pretty well.

Some songs are popular even nowadays. There is a recurrent leitmotif that occurs in the film at least four times regarding Albert Finney's character, Mark Wallace, either misplacing or losing his passport and his wife, Joanna (Audrey Hepburn), always finding it. The mile scene and the sound image are widely used in the film by the creators of it. We have a glance into the visions and sound of resent past, the years of 60 s. Audrey Hepburn's amazing wardrobe- a snapshot of fashion in the late 1960 s- was provided by Ken Scott, Michele Posted, Paco Rabanne, Mary Quant, and File and Tuffin. Hardy Amie's supplied clothes for Albert Finney. (Stephenson) I thought this was a very good movie.

I myself am a very big Audrey Hepburn fan, but even had I not been I would still have enjoyed this film. I loved how in showing a couples first five years of marriage there were five differnt time lines used. The way in which the timelines jump from one to the other really keeps interest in the film and story. Where in other movies like When Harry Meet Sally which covered many years but went in order, Two For The Road jumps from one timeline maybe say five years into the marriage then all the way back to the first then to the third and so on.

This passing of time also makes the characters easily likable and makes the viewer really care what happens to them. From beginning to end it is actually pretty enjoying trip into the resent past, and that is called Two For The Road. Actually I think that the film did not succeed in telling its story through its formal structure. Because the structure of the film is regular edited motion and it actually does not bring that piece of natural feelings that it should have been.

The play of the actors and the use of the specific film features do most of the job in this area. Hepburn has a brief affair with a man Finney has met and the scenes in which Finney comes upon the two of them at a cafe and then when Hepburn returns to their hotel room are particularly sensitive and fascinating. We often think we know how we might react to certain situations, but reality is filled with surprises. This is a film of great affection that not only delightful catches the exuberance of the mid- 1960 s but also the pains of growing old and maintaining the flame of love. By the end of the film, love remains precious, if not supreme.

On reflection, one might imagine William Powell and Carole Lombard handling these lead roles very well, but Finney and Hepburn are very perfect and epitomize here the special quality of truly great stars.
