Doctor employment, trends, interests. Introduction: The profession of a doctor has always been considered as one of the most prestigious professions in human history. Unlike the professions like economist, pilot, or earth scientist that are influenced by the demand for them at a certain time from the government of the society, the profession of a doctor is almost in constant demand for the fact that people always get sick and even die. The following term paper is going to speak about the current advantages or disadvantages of being a doctor, commenting on the current trends in medicine as well expressing educated findings on the preparations needed to become a doctor, specific areas of specialization, skills and the interests of the people in the profession. Mr. Holland (1985) claims that both people and the environments can be divided into six vocational personality types (or the combination of these types): Social (community, teaching), Realistic (outdoors, mechanical), Investigative (math, sciences), Enterprising (business), Artistic (art, medicine, music), and Conventional (details, clerical). This type values success in business or politics. This type views oneself as energetic, sociable, and ambitious Artistic type.

This type likes uniqueness and creativity in job activities. This type dislikes routine, repetitive or fully automated jobs. This type excels in creative works like music, art, drama, etc. This type values creativity in anything including business, marketing, art or crafts. This type views oneself as independent, expressive, and unique. Conventional type This type enjoys routine that can be expressed in machine operations, numbers, or routine corporate records.

This type views oneself as methodical and good at creating and following ones plan. Speaking about Holland's theory one should also note the following facts that can be derived form the six types mentioned above. According to Holland in the USA most people belong to any one (hardly two) types mentioned above. Similarities attract: creative (or other type) people are more likely to be found in each other proximity than in the proximity to other types.

When the same types work together they create a corporate culture that awards their personality type. Thus in art schools artistic types are awarded while in accounting department conventional type is the most rewarding. The environments can be of the same six types as people that work in them: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. People who work in the environment that perfectly matches their type are more likely to succeed in it because they would be most rewarded there.

Thus artistic types are better to find themselves in a position of a marketing manager than a financial analyst. The position of a doctor that we have chosen for this essay belongs to the social type meaning that only a person who likes helping others and solving social problems is more likely to succeed in it and positively contribute to the medical knowledge base of the USA. Market/ Job Trends for doctors. The number of jobs for doctors constantly grows. The largest job market is the Midwest which is also closely followed by the Southeast USA. The area that provides least available job openings for doctors (due to the market being already saturated) is the territory from Washington, D.

C. through Boston, MA. The Midwest still increases the amount of doctor job openings thus pushing the salaries up by as much as 30 %. Here one should note that in medicine there exist numerous professions that doctors assume, thus making doctor a rather general statement (Perelman, 65).

This trend certainly is the most important because if there is enough of doctors in a given industry than there will be no need in new applicants thus making even the most impressive prior education unimportant.

Females, on the other hand, are not much trusted as doctors and still are perceived by some as a good material for nurses. Females although formally have equal rights are still in lower overall social status than males and are less trusted in the position of doctors, lawyers, or company directors (Kapes, 36). The association of females as nurses still makes it hard for them to become doctors or to find clients who would choose female over male doctors. Culture has also been the main issue in the possible advancement in medical career for males and females.

In masculine countries like Japan and the USA, males still are culturally perceived as those who can achieve the top of career ladder and as those who can and should be the first to get rewarded. It is no wonder why males in the USA get promoted much faster, get better positions and more clients than females (Hansen, 1990, 68). In feminine countries, like Sweden, Norway, and other Scandinavian countries where the role of a woman is well-defined and appreciated females get fair treatment for their efforts. As a result, in the Scandinavian countries, the ratio of top executives, doctors, and politicians is close to 50 % males 50 % females, while in Sweden, female is the current President. As it can be seen from the following examples, culture exercises also some influence on the role of males and females in the USA as well as around the world.

Although, in the USA the feminist movement has achieved radical progress in women rights, females still find it rather hard and problematic to become decent doctors mainly due to the common belief in the population that males make better doctors (Hansen, 1990, 70). The supply and demand for doctors, the alternative medicine, the 10 years of education are important yet not vital in the medical profession. Regardless of whether or not a person managed to pass the exams to become a doctor, if this person is not of social type that Mr. Holland describes in his theory, than such person is more likely to quit the job due to the inability to fit in the environment that awards only social types.
