No Exit No Exit is a play that has no division into scenes. It has only one act. This play when it is performed on the stage last approximately only for one hour. The play is considered successful due to the Sartre's careful conclusion, which is dramatic and follows the classic pattern of development. In the beginning of the play, the characters are introduced and the setting is presented. Garcin, Inez, and Estelle are brought into Hell one by one and are lead by a valet.

Sartre gives the impression that they are all visitors of the hotel; however, soon it becomes clear that the characters are in the different kind of Hell. In this Hell, characters will torture one another. The action of the play begins when Garcin, Estelle, and Inez start to torment each other. These torments are at the same time intentional and unintentional. The torture of Garcin happens when he is present in the company of two women, when he would prefer to stay alone in order to think and sort the thoughts. Inez, who is a lesbian, is a subject to tortures of Estelle, whom she passionately desires.

Garcin draws the attention of Estelle. Estelle wants Garcin to be her lover; however, Inez is against such a flow of events that makes her left alone. All this makes Inez jealous of Garcin, who tries to keep Estelle from her. Later Garcin shows the interest in Inez and wants her to understand that he is not a coward one. In the moment when characters discuss their past, Estelle and Garcin start lying about their lives.

On the other hand, Inez is telling the truth. She admits that she lived a bad life on earth and states that the punishment in Hell is fair. Inez tells that when she was a lesbian she was sucking the life out of her lovers, which eventually made her able to control them in physical and emotional way. By telling lies, Estelle and Garcin are trying to convince each other that they are in Hell by a mistake and that on the earth they were noble and righteous. It is only through prodding that Inez brings out their true stories. Garcin is claiming that he was brave, however indeed he is coward and he undoubtedly deserted the battle when it all became too dangerous.

After trying to escape to Mexico, he was caught and then shot twelve times. After all this, Estelle was supposed to tell the truth about herself too. In reality, Estelle was married to a man three times older than she was and the reason for this was only money. Estelle wanted to live in luxury and at the same time, she wanted to have young lover. When she took a young lover, she gave birth to a child.

Estelle killed own child by throwing it into the lake. As we see, the characters deserved to be in Hell. The rising action builds to its climax when the characters continue to reveal their identities and the tortures imposed on each other increase. When Garcin becomes frustrated, he decides to leave. He bangs the door and when the door opens, he does not depart. It becomes impossible for him to leave, while Inez is still thinking of him as of a coward person.

When Estelle tries to shove Inez out the door, Garcin prevents this action and allows his torturer to be saved. The climatic words of the play were said by Garcin, Hell is other people when she refuses to tell him that he is not coward. The falling action of the play is quite short. Estelle picks up a knife and stabs Inez in a hope to get rid of her torturer once and forever. It is easy to understand that a dead person cannot be killed.

After Inez reminds Estelle about it, three characters fall into laughter. Garcin utters the brief conclusion to the play, We might as well get on with it. His words mean the nothingness of existential belief. The play is tightly unified by time, place and character. It is different from other plays of that time that there are only three major characters in No Exit and just very few minor ones. The entire play takes place in a single room in Hell during couple of days.

The action is quite clear. The play ends in the entire tragedy, when characters are defeated by their inner self. On the earth, their lives were bad and in Hell, they are condemned to an eternity of torturing each other. Even when the door in Hell is open, still there is no exit. The theme of the play is the cruelty of human being towards another human being and as it was exhibited in the play, both on earth and in Hell. Garcin was cruel to his wife.

He was cheating on her even though she loved him. Estelle was cruel by marrying an old man only in order to spend his money. After taking young lover, she became pregnant and after the birth of the child, she decided to kill her own kid. Inez was cruel by using her lesbian lovers for own needs and purposes. Their lives full of cruelty on earth were same cruel in Hell. Inez has a desire to build a relationship with Estelle, who rejects Inez and even spits in her face.

Estelle had a desire for Garcin and was constantly seducing him. Inez is being jealous and constantly stands between Garcin and Estelle. This does not allow them to get intimate. Garcin plays with Estelle's emotions.

Such an interconnection of cruelty makes lives of the characters miserable. Using these three characters Sartre weaves the theme of insincerity and falsehood in the play. Sartre was existentialist and was very critical of hypocrisy. He thinks that human being has absolute freedom to determine what he wants to become. The denial of ones existence makes a person to damn own life and lives of others. Garcin, Estelle, and Inez had proved that such a life has no meaning.

Having the opportunity to escape from Hell, they do not use the chance, because they understand that their life on earth will not be much different.
