Gun control has become one of the major political and social issues over the last three years in America. The most recent debate overlooking the gun control laws has peaked after the April 20, 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, when 14 youngsters became victims of the rampage. The issue of firearm regulations has been a vital question for several decades. There have been already precedents in our history when the topic of gun control was of a great importance, especially after such shocking events as shooting of President J.
F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King during the 1960 s and assassination attempt on President Reagan during the 1980 s. The gun control issue historically had divided Democratic and Republican parties and consequently their supporters. Democrats were insisting on stricter gun control laws, receiving the contributions from gun control advocates, while Republicans received strong support from gun manufacturers gun owners and gun rights groups. Democrats proposed to implement strict background checks before allowing buying a certain type of weapon, changing the legal age limit for gun owners to age 21 from current 18, which would decrease the sales of arms. In the opinion of gun rights groups new legislation would limit the constitutional rights of peaceful citizens, whose reason for buying a weapon is only limited to self-protection.
According to the Maslows hierarchy of psychological needs, the safety needs of a person come after basic physiological needs and are of a great importance. For some people it is impossible to reach comfort in life without feeling safe and secure. I agree that each citizen who is living in a free country has the right for security. This right is also provided by our legislation concerning the purchase of weapon.
With the purchase of a firearm we can purchase the feeling of security or at least a hope for a successful self-defense. But is not the police protecting us? How about other people who also want to feel safe? People, who want to be sure that nothing can happen to their kids at school? How about other members of our society, who are peaceful and do not want to have a gun at all? Lots of Americans in their childhood knew that their father has a gun, and if something would happen daddy would protect their family.
They grew up in the atmosphere of security and well-being. But world is changing. Everyday people watch violence on the TV, play violent computer games, and listen to aggressive music. Once I saw a 6 -year-old boy playing a computer game, where he was shooting his opponents and having great fun out of doing it. What will happen when he will grow up and will have a real gun?
It is hard to find the answer to this question. But parents should make an effort to at least to place the gun into secure location, where a child cannot reach it. What actually comes into the mind of a peaceful citizen while purchasing a firearm? I think that is the need of security. But are we not secure?
Definitely we are not, if we know that someone else has a gun. Do we really need guns? I do not, but if there is a killer out there, I better have one. My neighbor has a gun, what if he is insane? What if he will attempt to shoot me?
I better buy me a gun! As far as I see a weapon will not help to protect myself from a planned assault, but it will raise my self-confidence. That is the main reason for peaceful members of our society to buy guns. A killer will not attempt to shoot me; a thief will not attempt to rob me, because they assume that I can have a weapon to fight them back.
All this reminds me a period of Cold War, the race of arms. Nobody will benefit in such a situation except gun manufacturers. But this is the way, how things work. It is impossible to prohibit the sales of arms, because lots of people already own some kind of weapon. Also, it will be absolutely unfair according to others who want to have a gun too.
It would be good if there were not guns at all, but it would be absolutely unrealistic for law enforcement agencies to confiscate all weapons in the country. Unfortunately, people had, have and will have guns. And we have to deal with it. In my opinion there should be new and strict gun control laws, which should be implemented gradually over time so nobody will be treated unfairly. Maybe, in 50 years there will not be any weapons at all, maybe, all people will live in peace.
