Lord of Darkness Conrad's novel, Heart of Darkness, relies on the historical period of imperialism in order to describe its protagonist, Charlie Marlow, and his struggle. Marlow's catharsis in the novel, as he goes to the Congo, rests on how he visualizes the effects of imperialism. Marlow is asked by "the company", the organization for which he works, to travel to the Congo River and report back to them about Mr. Kurtz, a top notch officer of theirs. When he sets sail, he doesn't know what to expect. When his journey is completed, this little "trip" will have changed Marlow forever.

Heart of Darkness is a story of one man's journey through the African Congo and the "enlightenment" of his soul. It begins with Charlie Marlow, along with a few of his comrades, cruising aboard the Nellie, a traditional sailboat. On the boat, Marlow begins to tell of his experiences in the Congo. Conrad uses Marlow to reveal all the personal thoughts and emotions that he wants to portray while Marlow goes on this voyage of a lifetime. The movie Lord of the Flies also encompasses a broad array of interesting themes, the most important being how humans can become savages in order to survive in the difficult situation. The beast in Lord of the Flies was nothing more than the darker side of human nature coming out in the boys.

The evil presence they imagined was hunting them on the island did not exist; however, in their fear the boys became almost like beasts themselves. That the true beast was the basic animal instincts of the boys was clearly shown throughout the movie. In Lord of th Flis and Hart of Darknss, thr ar affective comparisons and contrasts btwn th protagonist and th antagonist. vn though th protagonist and th antagonist hav th sam intentions, thy hav different movies. In Hart of Darknss, Marlow wants to sav Kurtz, but th manager do't want Marlow to bring back Kurtz, because th manager is afraid that if Marlow brings back Kurtz than h'll hav to quit his job and giv it to Kurtz. In Lord of th Flis, Jack wants to tak ovr th leadership and Ralph, on th othr hand, wants to b a last himself.

Ralph wants to b th last so that h could mak som kind of plan to gt off th island, but Jack wants to b a last so h can b th rule and hunt, so that h has mat for himself. Th protagonist wants victory ovr th antagonist and th antagonist wants to d-fat th protagonist. Whr as th antagonist has an vil purpose and th protagonist had a good purpose. A similar concept btwn th protagonist and th antagonist is that both of thm ar bad north to dar to go against ach othr.

Thy don't hid from ach othr, but thy both of out and confront ach othr. In Hart of Darknss, Marlow know that th manager didn't want Kurtz back, but h was bad north to try bringing Kurtz back. Th many know Marlow was just lik Kurtz. That h will not giv up so asy. Th manager did v rything in his power to stop Marlow. vn if thy think the opponent is strong, thy don't back away from th far of facing thm.

In Lord of th Flis, Piggy knows that Jack and his trib is strong than him, but still h gos ovr to th trib and space his mind out about how thy wr wrong. When a person mak's up the mind to confront the opponent, nothing can stop thm. Another comparable characteristic btwn th protagonist and th antagonist is that both of thm sk ring. On or th othr hav rag of ring in the minds. In Lords of th Flis Jack is jealous of Ralph, because h was cost for leadership.

Jack want ring and h start his trib and bcom's th chief of th huntr's. H turns himself and his group into savage. In Hart of Darknss, Kurtz was going to b th manager didn't want to lt go of his job. So when Kurtz was sick and not medication. Th old manager nvr snt Kurtz anything. H was skin ring because h thought th officials of th trad company wr going to hir Kurtz.

Ring is on of th things which on can't rss, but at th sam tim th results ar of bad. In Hart of Darknss and in Lord of th Flis both of th hro's, Marlow and Ralph, hav some or somthing to rly on. This gav thm strength and it is what motivated thm to do th acts of bravery and both of thm did on it for the survival. Ralph has a conch, which symbols his leadership. When it is crush, v rything starts to fall apart. Jack and his trib start to tak ovr.

Marlow had to sav Kurtz that was his mission and that's what kit him going After Kurtz date Marlow lft th ivory trad. After Marlow lft th manager was in car. Th primary distinction btwn a protagonist and th adversely is that a protagonist always tris to do th right thing and follows th path of integrity and th advisory always tris to com in th way and can problems. Ralph and Piggy want to kp th fir going so that thy can b rss, but Jack and his follows want to cook th mat and thy don't car if th fir is gon. Ralph is in touch with reality, h wants to kp th fir going, but Jack stands in th way printing him from what h wants to accomplish. In Hart of Darknss when Marlow's star brak's down and h asks th manager to gt rights to fix th star.

Th manager kps on making xpass. Another diffing btwn th protagonist and th antagonist is that th protagonist is kind and tour, was th antagonist is could and vil. Ralph tak car of th litt luns and tris to kp thm saf. Jack and his trib turn into savage and killing popl. Thy did the danc of date to kill Simon mercilessly, who was innocent. Simon's/Bast's date symbols th firmness of Jack's trib.

No matter what th manager told Marlow about Kurtz bing a the, Marlow didn't giv up on Kurtz h had faith and trust Kurtz but than th manager. Manager didn't car about any but himself. In conclusion, th antagonist is an obstacle for th protagonist and th protagonist is support to ovr com th obstacle. Th protagonist most of pulls through on way or another. In Hart of Darknss Marlow says th manager, th ivory trad, and date all his adversaries and in Lord of th Flis, Ralph says from Jack and his trib. Both protagonist and antagonist hav similar motifs.

But also ar different because of many things such as bing vil or good and bing abl to of th right thing or not. Words Count: 1, 162. Bibliography: Bloom, H. Lord of the Flies How the Movie Differs. New York: Random House, 1995. Finley, W.
