White Oleander Film Review A brief narrative of the plot: Based on the best-seller book White Oleander by Janet Fitch, the motion picture tells the story of Astrid, a girl that grew and lived in the city of Los Angeles. The picture follows a yung was june through hardship and lss of many foster homes in Los Angeles (with their own laws, rules, and lessons) to maturity, jy and true independence. After Astrid's mother Ingrid kills her (Ingrid's) boyfriend, the fifteen-year old girl witnesses her mothers arrest. This becomes the major turning point of the movie; from now on Astrid is on her own for the rest of her life. Having changed many of the foster homes Astrid manages to receive the most important lessons that will help her survive in everyday grown-up living. Astrid tries desperately t free her wn identity within her ever-changing environment.

Frm behind bars, Ingrid's powerful influence is the nly constant in Astrid's life. In the three years that mark her passage frm child t adult, Astrid must learn the value f independence and courage, rage and forgiveness, love and survival, t earn her free frm the past. Characters and their features: Astrid (Alison Lohman) the only child in the single-mother family. The plot begins developing when Astrid is only fifteen, therefore the character of the girl is yet undetermined.

Throughout the film Astrid is very much influenced by her mother who resides in the jail. The affects of the past are obvious in many behaviours of young girl. She attempts to be alike to her mother. The main features of the character are individuality, determination, and self-dependence.

Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) mother of Ingrid, a very uncompromising and seductive woman. Throughout the movie tends to somewhat tyrannic behaviour towards the people surrounding her, and, at the first place, to her daughter. The way the director of the film has decided to depict that character does not provide on unanimous answer of whether she is good or bad. At least the question whether this eccentric, urban-arty woman killed her boyfriend remains open to the viewer.

Foster Mothers (Robin Wright Penn and Renee Zellweger) the first is a Bible-fanatic and very repellent woman. Very much concerned with own self-being, and sees own love-competitor in Astrid. Therefore Astrid does not stay long in this house. After a visit to the juvenile centre, Astrid ends up in the second foster home, where Renee Zellweger plays the mother. This character is more appealing to the viewer because finally we see a person suffering not less than Astrid but again not losing her will and self-control.

The problem of the second foster mother is simple she is very lonely and is looking for someone to make her a company while her husband is away for film sets. The second mother has some lesbian traits of the character. Womens issues in the story: White Oleander has several of the issues related to the sophisticated character of a woman in it. One of the main issues is the desire of many mothers to control the development of their childrens life. On the example of Ingrid the viewer can see how one (even being held at the penitentiary) can manipulate the behaviour and thoughts not only of her own daughter but also of many people around her. However the movie possesses something that can make the lives of many viewing girls a little bit clearer.

The director has managed to deliver the point of understanding, which can help many young women to determine own path in the life, and see that many things that can be viewed as very uncomfortable from the first sight are rather helpful at the end of the story. The story of Astrid is a great example of what a woman can do when placed in harsh conditions. Astrid has developed a strong and unique character, and that is probably the main lesson of the film.
