Anxiety and Academic Performance Social anxiety is one of the most usual psychiatric disorders among people. Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and fear of interactions with other people that can bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, and criticism. In other words, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. A person in many cases becomes anxious in social situations, however when being alone feels fine.

There are many symptoms of social anxiety, which would be hard to list, but the most severe are panic attacks. An individual starts to panic, while he or she supposes that something in his or her social contact went wrong and this can result the loss of control, lack of faith in own abilities and a drive to escape somewhere. Sometimes a person can get very confused without knowing what to do next. A person who suffers from this disorder may loose own identity or just may be afraid to show it. Some side effects of social anxiety may include depression, loss of self-esteem, poor performance, and tendency towards drug abuse. The most dangerous type of social anxiety is social phobia (web).

It is intense fear to be disgraced in social situations, especially when many people are present around. Social anxiety usually develops in early adolescence or childhood and greatly influences the development of a personality. People who are suffering from social anxiety and social phobia usually think that other people have better skills and therefore, are more competent. People become irritated and pay close attention to small mistakes and details, which in most cases mean nothing. All the time they have a feeling that they are being observed and judged. Basically, they have phobia of being at public places.

The most common type of social phobia is the fear of public speaking. Social anxiety influences academic performance of a person. Test anxiety is tightly related to social anxiety. There are many situations, which can provoke a person with social anxiety to fell nervous.

The settings, which cause anxiety, are common, while studying at university or school. Such a setting like test makes a student to feel anxious. Various projects at schools and universities are frequent. There are some projects, which are performed in a group. The group members often meet in order to discuss different issues and express their opinions concerning some aspects.

If one of the groups members suffers from anxiety, he, or she is afraid to express own concerns and to speak up about some issue that from his or her point of view would be useful. The person is just afraid to be criticized. Some individuals may be simply afraid to participate in groups. This often leads to the point that if something is not clear for a person, then he or she will never ask about that and eventually will not receive required information. Therefore, a person misses that information and it is too bad if the information will be vital in understanding some concepts that are related with studying a subject.

What else could influence academic performance? Well, it is suggested that people who suffer from anxiety are afraid to work and write, while being observed. Writing and reading are the essential components in educational process. This often leads to the point when a person stops taking notes in class, but is also afraid to establish an eye contact with a professor in order to perceive information. Looking at the wall or in the window will not result into remembering the lecture.

The most vital thing that actually directly influences academic performance is taking a test. According to Austin, Partridge, Bitner, and Wadlington (1995) students of all ages suffer from a condition known as test anxiety. The definition of test anxiety is a situation when a person feels tension and anxiety that interfere with the ability to communicate, what one knows in a test situation. Not only does test anxiety lead to communication failure, but also it can lead to poor self-esteem, and stress related physical ailments, which eventually cause poor performance among students.

It is vital for teachers to be aware of test anxiety in their students, but they also need to be aware of ways in which they as the teacher can possibly help their students to overcome test anxiety. Austin, Partridge, Bitner, and Wadlington (1995) present a method that teachers can use to help students deal with test anxiety. This method is called systematic desensitization and involves deep muscle relaxation. People who suffer from anxiety are usually afraid to take tests (The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, 2 nd Ed. ). They feel very nervous before the exam and are too concerned about their grade. If an individual feels too nervous, it is almost impossible for him or her to concentrate on solving some sort of problem.

Therefore, a person taking a test can get so worried that may even forget some piece of material or just by mistake choose a wrong answer on the test. It is possible to conclude that an individual who suffers from anxiety will achieve a low grade on the exam. Besides taking a test itself, a large number of other issues that influence the behavior of anxious person were discussed before. Therefore, it is clear that a person suffering from social anxiety will not learn all the required information, will miss a lot of material and even all these factors would not take place, this person still will be nervous on the test and will eventually receive a low grade. For this reason, it is possible to find that the learning related behavior of a socially anxious person is directly connected with academic performance and different fears that the person may suffer from will negatively influence the performance. It is also suggested by scientists that there are another traits resulted from anxiety, which influence academic performance.

Individuals may have poor grasp of subject, bad work habits, and lack of motivation. Essay writing is of a great importance in every major, and for anxious students it is much harder to write a successful essay. These are some of the key points that result into overall poor grades in different fields of studies. In general, students with high anxiety unsuccessfully perform written or oral presentations and participations in seminars. It is easy to find out that there are many different tasks in educational process, which require public appearance and public speaking.

Unfortunately, these settings are the hardest ones for a person suffering from social anxiety. Usually, for a nervous individual several attempts are needed in order to receive a degree. However, it is also suggested that in some subjects an individual suffering from social anxiety may have better achievement that in other. For instance, anxious students may perform well in such areas as natural sciences and history. Nevertheless, in such subjects as psychology, social sciences, art, and business administration in majority of cases, students suffering from social anxiety receive low grades. Previously written evidence proves that social anxiety directly influences academic performance resulting into overall low GPA.

Social anxiety not only influences the understanding of material, but also directly enables a person to some extent to receive new knowledge. Therefore, if new skills and knowledge are not acquired, a person lacking vital material becomes nervous during different group projects and class participations, which are aimed for practicing and using the material or skill in order to improve the knowledge of a subject. Therefore, a person simply does not acquire good knowledge. Moreover, during exam the person suffering from test anxiety starts to panic and eventually picks incorrect answers due to the lack of knowledge and concentration. Therefore, social anxiety and especially test anxiety directly influence academic performance. Sources: web web Social Phobia: Diagnosis, Assessment, and Treatment By Richard G.
