Advertising and Cultural Consumption Advertising is all around us, its everywhere we look from the televisions in our homes to signs on the busses. It is almost impossible to avoid. Since advertising is such a big part of our social and economical environment, it is important that we know what these images our doing to us. Advertising influences us in many ways, often we do not even notice its effects.

This is why advertising has become such a controversial topic today in our society. Advertising is a business, everything in an advertisement is planed right down to the last word. However, we might ignore an ad if it was not filled with flashy slogans and excitement. The ways in which ads are composed promote the consumer to buy unnecessary goods. We often will run out to buy a new product because an ad tell us the product is better then the last edition or because a well know "role model" has or uses the product. For example, because Grant Hill drinks "Sprite" if we drink it to we will be able to be like him.

However these are just ploys to get us to buy the product. Advertisers are going to all extremes to promote their products. The fight to produce the most effective ad is all around us. The product that will sell is the one that catches the consumers eye and leaves a lasting impression. Advertising promotes materialistic values and lifestyles. Causing us to judge others by what they have and not who they are. With the use of deception, advertising causes us to become greedy and materialistic. Advertisers portray happiness with the use of materials.

Advertising promotes people to spend money for different products and makes consumption the most important goal in life. The primary purpose of advertising is to sell the advertised product but advertising has many other purposes. The first is communicating the brand personality. The campaign must convey the type of company that is selling the product. The second is indicating the brands place in the community. The fifth and sixth are telling news about the merchandise and announcing sales or promotional offers. These two functions are similar because both provide important information about the product. The seventh is to build traffic.

In a store, this means to increase the number of people who visit the store location. The eighth function is reaching charge customers. The ninth and tenth functions are to reach customers beyond normal range and to win new customers. These functions are meant to expand the market place for the brand. The main purposes of advertising go along with its goals and objectives.

The selective motive is preference for a certain type of product. In the world today there are many advertisements that do not correctly fulfill the message that they are sending across to people. Many companies use advertisements to demonstrate an enhanced representation of their item. Usually, tobacco companies are known as deceitful when it comes to advertising their product.

It is a proven fact that cigarettes are not good for your health, in fact, they are even proven to cause cancer and deaths. However, certain tobacco companies find it necessary to try to swindle consumers into thinking that they are healthy for you and make you happy. It is unfair for the tobacco companies to possess the ability to trick consumers into thinking something that is not true. Cigarette advertisements tend to emphasize youthful vigor, sexual attraction, and independence themes to purposely appeal to teenagers and young adults struggling with these issues. In a Winston cigarette company advertisement that I found in a magazine, group of young and attractive people, who are smiling and presumably having fun, is shown.

In the bottom, there is a sign: Can you say that we are cannot rest? This advertisement is for Winston cigarettes but there is not one cigarette in the picture. All this image does is portray a people having a fun time and it simply puts two packs of Winston and Winston Lights in the upper right hand corner. It is not fair that companies such as these can portray the idea of participating in activities such as smoking to be a pleasurable and fun experience. It is a proven fact that over 350, 000 people a year die from smoking.

With that fact known, companies should not be permitted to associate pleasure with the experience of smoking. Companies such as Winston are relaying a message to people, especially kids, that says it is fun to smoke. Sure there may be a small message that says SURGEON GENERALS WARNING: Quitting Smoking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks To Your Health, but this is not enough to draw attention away from brightly dressed fun loving couple in the middle of the page. With all the facts that people know today about the danger of smoking why does todays society feel that it is okay to let cigarette producers pull the wool over our eyes in an advertisement? Trying to fool people into thinking cigarettes are fun is just wrong.

The damage that they cause is much greater then any type of small pleasure gained from the activity. Smoking causes lung cancer, which in turn causes 80 - 90 % of all deaths caused by cancer. Smoking is not pleasurable it is very bad and unhealthy and that is the bottom line. It is dishonorable and wrong for Winston to place an advertisement in this manner. The motives can be also based upon a certain need.

An example given by Shirley F. Milton was a woman buying a frying pan. If the primary motive was the need for the pan, the selective motive would be the woman deciding she wants a Teflon pan because she has seen ads that say Teflon is better. The last motive is the patronage motive. This motive is caused by loyalty to a particular brand. Suppose the woman enjoyed the Teflon pan, she had purchased and now needs a crock-pot.

She is likely to purchase a crock-pot made by the same brand because she trusts its products and quality. The woman has gone through all the buying motives and formed brand loyalty a long-term goal of most companies. This example can be used to describe many advertising campaigns today. They use this tactics too often.

It is the same when it comes to buying certain outfit for sports. Brand loyalty makes a customer to believe that products of this company are the best in all types of sports, which certainly is just an assumption. Advertising also has hidden objectives, which are meant to target customers on a more subconscious level. The advertisers attract customers by providing a solution to the more self-serving needs, those, which go beyond necessity.
