Lyric poetry and narrative poetry Poetry appeared in prehistoric times when people started to pass down their oral history in poetic language and song. Poetry is a kind of literature which combines the sound and meaning of language for creation of ideas and feelings. The sound and the rhythm of the poetry attract many people. For example, children enjoy hearing pleasing rhymes and strong rhythms of nursery rhymes. Early peoples used poetry with accompanying music in songs, prayers, and magic spells. After the writing had developed, poetry became to an important written art.
Nowadays, millions of people all over the world continue to listen to or read poetry. The two main kinds of poetry have developed through these longer years: lyric and narrative. Lyric poetry is the most widespread type of poetry. A lyric poem is a short, non-narrative poem in which a single speaker presents his state of mind or his emotional state. The word lyric comes from lyre, a hartline music instrument played by ancient Greeks. Nowadays, lyric poetry usually means any short poem.
Subcategories of the lyrics are, for example elegy, ode, sonnet and dramatic monologue and most occasional poetry. The haiku, a Japanese form, is one of the shortest types of lyric poetry. In Japanese, the haiku consists of 17 syllables arranged in three lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second 7, and the third 5. Other forms of lyrics are longer and more complicated than the Japanese haiku.
For example, the ode is a serious lyric that is full of high praise and noble feeling. Many odes mark important public events. Another form is the elegy which is a meditation on life and death. Many elegies mourn the death of a famous person or a close friend. The best-known type of lyric poetry is the Sonnet, for example, masterpieces written by Shakespeare. There are particularly very strict rules about a sonnet, and writing a sonnet is considered the most difficult form of writing in English.

Epics are long poems usually describing the deeds of heroes or gods in battle or conflicts between human beings and natural and divine forces.
Many other epics narrate about the origin or history of a people. This is probably the oldest surviving form of poetry. Narrative poetry gives a verbal representation, in verse, of a sequence of connected events, it propels characters through a plot. The story is always told by a narrator.
Narrative poems the of a love story (like Tennyson's Maud), the story of a father and son (like Wordsworth's Michael) or the deeds of a hero or heroine (like Walter Scott's Lay of the Last Minstrel). An example is "The Charge Of The Light Brigade." The great Greek poems "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" are Epic narratives, with action on a grand scale and a titanic manner of struggle with great, almost superhuman, forces. "The Shooting Of Dan McGrew" narrates a story, as does "The Cremation Of Sam McGee." These are story poems. Sometimes story poems are set to music. A sterling example of this is Loreena McKinnitts version of "The Lady Of Shalott." A ballad is a song, originally transmitted orally, which tells a story.
It is an important form of folk poetry which was adapted for literary uses from the sixteenth century onwards. The ballad stanza is usually a four-line stanza, alternating tetrameter and trimeter.
