Iran's Nuclear Program and U. S. 's Involvements and Interests The Iran's nuclear program is considered to be a threat to U. S. national security by many American politicians and those people who share their concerns. It is no secret to everyone that Iran had adopted an aggressive attitude towards USA after the events of Islamic revolution in 1980. Even now, long after the death of Ayatollah Khomeini, many Iranians consider USA being Great Satan and this anti-American sentiment is very popular among large portion of Iran's population.
The reason for this is American continuous support of Israelis genocidal policies towards Palestinians. Iran is a one of the worlds greatest military powers, with its army ranking to be among seven largest armies in the world. The war between Iran and Iraq has proven Iran's capability to defend its territory and even switching to offensive operations. Only American support of Saddam Hussein at the time prevented his regime from being overthrown by Iranians. There is no doubt that the region of Persian Gulf and Middle East is among most politically unstable in the world. The world largest oil reserves along with explosive mentality of local population makes it really dangerous mix.
India and Pakistan have now admitted of possessing nuclear weapons. Also CIA estimates Israel of having at least 200 of nuclear warheads, which is almost as many as Russians have, although officially it denies it. Basically, Israel is capable of wiping off any country in the region and it will if there is any danger posed to Israel fro abroad. In my opinion, there is no doubt that itll be much better for all if Muslim countries to never get hold of nuclear weapons. Still, I also think that Bible thumper's with nukes in the White House are just as dangerous. Jews are also not the holy cows like theyd like everyone to think of them. Itd be much better if USA had adopted more flexible foreign policy, regarding the issue. After death of Khomeini in Iran, there is no reason why this country cant become as friendly to US as Saudi Arabia. Iranian society gets more civilized and this is only the matter of time before Islams influence will be reduced by the realities of everyday peoples lives, just as it happened in European countries, where Christianity now is nothing but religion of senile people and has lost all of its authority. Smart politicians only use force when there is simply no other option.
In this respect, Bush's administration cannot be given a credit. It seems like America actually wants confrontation, because certain circles can benefit on this. The best way for America to act is to equally demand from Israel to comply with IAEA if it wants Iran to do the same. This will be fair and it will also strengthen US prestige as great international arbiter.
This corresponds to concept of power balance. Only such balance allowed USA and USSR to avoid open war. This is also what will guarantee India/Pakistan peaceful existence from this time on. Im sure that even if Iran did develop nuclear weapons, USA wouldnt be immediately threatened by it, as long as it concerned about its own safety, rather then safety of Israel. It is important to understand, that technology has tendency to spread and there are no effective measures slow down this process in the long run. Thats why, instead of being a bully and having more and more countries to turn away, USA should simply reconsider its foreign policies.
For now it seems that Iran is only trying to maintain some dignity by saying that no foreign power can be allowed to define Iran's internal policy. It is obvious to everyone that this country has no other option but to abide. To this end, the EU capitals and Washington should embrace Iran's democratic opposition forces that are working to unseat the ruling mullahs. The clock is ticking. Of course, opinions like this cannot be considered as anything else but attempts to change Iranian government by foreign powers. This makes many people who live in the area to rightly doubt the sincerity of USA being exclusively interested in eliminating nuclear threat and nothing else.
There are forces within America that strive for installing governments around the world according to its wishes. This situation is quite normal, as long as American national interests define such policy. But what if this nation appears to be concerned with other nations safety more than with its own? In my opinion, Iran has the right to pursue with its nuclear program if it has peaceful objectives. If it wasnt so, Israel wouldve struck Iran's nuclear facilities long time ago, like it did in 1986, when Iraq's territory was being bombed by Israelis Air Force because Israel believed that there was some suspicious activity going on. There is no status quo in the classical sense of this word, regarding the issue.
Situation is being in constant development, so it is too early to say now what is going to happen with this international issue. But it is very unlikely to expect from U. S. government any resolute reaction on Iran's unwillingness to comply with its demands, if this is going to be the case at this time. There is a war in Iraq and American military force is too spread out around the world as it is. Iran's leadership is aware of this and thats why we can only see the minimal cooperation on its part.
Still, Iran will have to decide whether its going to pursue with its nuclear program or to be bombed into Stone Age, sooner or later.
