Worn Path by Eudora Welty Eudora Welty's story Worn Path is a good example of author being able to introduce readers to a very wide emotional spectrum, despite the fact that this story is very short. This is done thorough excessive use of symbolism, as writing method. The plot of Worn Path is quite simple. Old woman Phoenix Jackson walks a long way to the town through the woods and cornfield to get her grandson a medicine.

She experiences different emotions, while walking. The nature here plays a role of her companion, in symbolical way, as it conveys her a different messages It is only in the end of the story do we find out the purpose of her trip. But the storys plot itself hardly revolves around the pragmatical purpose of Jacksons journey, especially after we learn that her grandson is very unlikely to recover, since he had swallowed lye. Nevertheless, there is an illusive aura of purposefulness in how old lady walks.

Replying to hunters suggestion that itd be better for her if she turned around and went back, grandma said: I bound to go to town, mister The time come around. As a matter of fact, the old womans trip can be thought of in terms of metaphysical quest. The seeming futility of it, from practical point of view, is meant to emphasize its spiritual aspects. From very beginning, the reader gets a feeling that the conclusion of the story is going to be illusive as well. Therefore, one reads about Jacksons traveling experiences with great attention, in order not to miss authors original message.

This is because that the greatest pleasure from reading works of literature, where author applies a symbolism, comes as result of ones ability to decipher original meaning of such work. It is like a puzzle there are many ways to assemble it, so that pieces would fit, but there is only one way to assemble it properly, when the actual picture begins to make sense. On she went. The woods were deep and still. The sun made the pine needles almost too bright to look at, up where the wind rocked. The cones dropped as light as feathers.

Down in the hollow was the mourning dover was not too late for him author skillfully provides us with a sense of stillness in this fraction of her story. It is meant to show us the transgression al essence of Jacksons trip. Shes old; therefore, we can associate her with death more than with hiking through the woods. Still, she walks, while even the woods seem to be dead and silent.

It is the ultimate purpose of her trip, even though she doesnt realize it to defy the laws of nature. It is not by accident that Welty mentions the bushes of thorn, which try to prevent Jackson from reaching her destination: it was not possible to allow the dress to tear. I in the thorny bush, she said. "Thorns, you doing your appointed work. Never want to let folks pass, no sir. Old eyes thought you was a pretty little green bush. When grandma meets the hunter, he looks down upon her with a sense of pity, since she appears as being too old to walk long distances.

Still, his pity has the properties of amusement. Well, Granny! he laughed. What are you doing there? riding the horse and being young, gives this man the sense of superiority. Nevertheless, even though that he can ride in any direction he wants and can do it ten times faster than the old grandma, he doesnt seem to have the most important thing - the sense of purpose.

If quest is thought as philosophical category, than the hunter will emerge as object of it, while grandma Jackson is clearly the subject. As it appears in the end, Jackson wasnt even consciously remembering the purpose of her journey, but its the journey itself that gives purpose for anyone that undertakes it. This is exactly why many people enjoy driving cars without any particular reason. The old saying goes as long as man is on his way, he possesses the hope. Another theme of Worn Path is the irrational nature of love. It is love that gives strength to those who travel.

At the end, we actually learn that grandma Jackson makes her trips to the town on regular basis. One of the nurses at the hospital said: Oh, that's just old Aunt Phoenix she doesn't come for herself she has a little grandson. She makes these trips just as regular as clockwork. She lives away back off the Old Natchez Trace. Apparently, grandma could forget why she had to come to the town, but she could never forget about her love to her grandson. After she was being given a nickel by the nurse, she didnt even think of what she shouldve done with it.

Its all clear to her: I going to the store and buy my child a little windmill they sells, made out of paper. He going to find it hard to believe there such a thing in the world. I'll march myself back where he waiting, holding it straight up in this hand. Since the times of Cervantes, the images of windmills are used in the literature as emblematic symbols of absurd. The wind is the principle of their functioning, yet it cannot be seen The buying a toy windmill to her grandson can bring him a little relief, yet we cant imagine that there grandma could spend her nickel on herself. The absurd does make sense if its filled with love it seems to be the essence of Welty's message to the readers.

The fact that Welty managed to give the reader a certain moral lesson, without engaging in boring Christian moralizing, only proves that she is really a superior writer. Her concept of love is not based on the principle of reward but on the notion of absurd. That makes her story especially appealing to the intelligent reader, as she properly describes the true nature of this phenomenon. He suffer and it don't seem to put him back at all. He got a sweet look. He going to last these grandmas words only dont make sense if we analyze them from the rational point of view.

But this is exactly authors point the illogical notions can be fully justified, for as long as there are people, whore willing to actively pursue them. While reading the story Worn Path, I had a strange feeling that it was the masked story of medieval knights quest. The three necessary elements of it can be easily identified there hostile environment, love and the journey. If Welty wrote that old grandma was carrying a spear with her all along, it would sound as quite natural
