True Diversity: Ethics Development, Understanding, and Application Paper Ethics is very crucial discipline that has great influence on our everyday life and activities. What is good? What is not good? Why do we think it is good? Why do we think it is not good? This is the philosophical or theoretical use of the ethics concept.

It is this use of ethics that forms a major area of concern in many areas of society. It is important to recognize that Professional Ethics is rooted in Ethical Theory and that Practical Ethics is rooted in Theoretical Ethics. In other words, there are ethical reasons, which explain why we do what we do in our decision-making and our actions. To better understand what ethics means in my life I would try to look inside my inner self and bring out some ethical considerations. Ethics is closely concerned with moral, beliefs and values. All these concepts are many similar and at the same time they are very different.

Morality is a complex of ideologies, which are established on religious, cultural, and philosophical models and beliefs, by which a person resolve whether his or her actions are wrong or right. These models and beliefs are often made common by a group of people, and this way serve to adjust the actions of its members. Conformity to this generalization may be called morality. A "moral" may submit to a special principle, typically as casual and general synopsis with admiration to a moral code, as it is applied in a certain individual circumstances. Values are the key component of peoples judgments. In order to understand other peoples opinion we have to understand and evaluate their values.

This rule applies to the business environment. In order to achieve success in a work environment, one has to evaluate his superiors values. The best way to approach a manager or a supervisor is to think through their values. In this class, I learned that going through the values of others could lead us to the desired result, even if our ideas contradict those of others. The best way to address different ideas is to convince others through their own values. Consequently, business as well as private issues would be easier to resolve.

As a result, we can achieve our way without starting confrontations. Along with ethics, I believe that there are many other things that contribute to how ethical someone acts towards another person. My view on ethics is that everything around you can influence the way you behave. Although there is always going to be some things in your life that have more impact on you than others. To me, these include: religion and beliefs, the way parents raise their children, role models, and teachers.

In life, you are encountered by various types of people with none of them being the same, so with this in mind you must be specific to each persons individual unique characteristics. Religion and spirituality are huge influences on me and the way I act towards other people. Throughout religious books many points are stressed that deal with treating people in a good manner. What your parents believe to be morally correct is the basis for how they raise you. You establish your morals from what your parents believe and pressed upon you and they compile their morals from their parents. Children look up to their parents to figure out how to act and do things.

This is a major influence on what people become in the future. A role model is someone that another person looks up to and strives to be like. Role models are very important in peoples lives. Without role models people would not strive for excellence or make themselves act as though their role models would behave. They have enormous impact on other beings lives.

People look for someone who they believe has the perfect characteristics and attempt to be like them. I believe that role models influence people to do things and they are one of the greatest aspects in a persons life. Teachers give students numerous insights about life and the everyday world. They teach you how to be polite and how to act around other people. With their teachings, they also show their words through their actions.

To be able to determine the ethical value of a decision, I have to evaluate and understand my values. My values have three pillars: a better life for my family, honesty, and spiritual compliance. Those are the three main factors that constitute my values. Consequently, my decisions are ethical when they satisfy those three values. Looking at past decisions that I regret; those decisions didnt satisfy those three values. This class helps me understand how to make an ethical decision based on my values.

One key factor in making a decision is complacency of ones values. As I continue through my daily life critical thinking and affective decision-making will persist in playing a vital role in my life. I think critical thinking leads to good decision-making. This process involves several steps. First, you need to know what it is that you are trying to find, whether it is truth in an object, solutions to a problem, or the facts about a topic. Next, it is best to analyze or investigate the issue or situation.

Once you have analyzed and investigated by asking questions to get answers you can make informed decisions that will better form your thoughts or opinions on a subject. Critical thinking and decision making go hand-in-hand. A person can make decisions without thinking critically (Readings, 2003). For example, choosing what you want to eat off of a menu does not require someone to think critically. When we talk about more complex issues, we need to be able to ask questions and get answers from many sources in order to make an informed decision. Obviously, most people are going to have preconceived notions or assumptions that will affect the way they look at any issue and the way they see new information.

A good critical thinker will base their decisions upon reliable and truthful information. The benefits derived from being a critical thinker are endless. "You " ll increase your ability to perform thinking processes that help you reach any kind of school, career, or life goal" (Carter, et al, 1998) It allows you to come up with new ideas rather than just working off of others. It also allows you to be a valuable employee. Most importantly, it stimulates your ability to think creatively. I believe a decision is the conclusion that is reached after the consideration of the available information. A good decision can only be made after the careful consideration, through the use of critical thinking, of all of the available facts.

Browne and Kelley define a decision as Decisions are streams of choices. While each choice might be treated as a discrete event and each sub problem might be considered a discrete problem, the choices accumulate either by design or happen-stance. At some point, the accumulation builds a momentum of its own that can sweep up even well-intentioned decision makers (Browne and Kelley, 1994, p. 119. What should be quite evident at this point is that in order to make a good decision on any subject, a person must make careful use of critical thinking. Good decision-making is not possible without critical thinking. Critical thinking is used every day by every person whether they relies it or not and every successful business uses critical thinking in many ways.

Businesses use critical thinking when deciding on a new product to deliver to its customers and when deciding what is the best method for delivery of its services to the customers. (McCall, Kaplan, 2003). I use critical thinking at work to manage people and help them with their problems. My job at Casino has weekly meetings to evaluate how the business is doing. We gather with other managers and personal and brainstorm and try to solve contemporary problems.

These meetings have always been a great place to use my critical thinking skills. Problems are always brought up at these meetings. Typically, I will ask questions to identify the specifics of the problem and once I have established what is needed I will make suggestions to try to solve the problem. My colleagues have always been open to my suggestions and have implemented several of my ideas. The fact that I am critical thinker has lead to my quick promotion through the ranks.

This shows our critical thinking can benefit an individual at work. In conclusion, it can be said the critical thinking is a key part in the process of learning. Critical thinking leads to a good decision-making. By asking questions and investigating facts an individual or group can come up with informed answers to complex questions that will enrich their lives. At the same time manager in casino must be disciplined, and able to respond quickly and effectively to situations that may occur. In order to do all this, you must be able to think critically.

Being in my profession, you are involved in peoples lives everyday, and by thinking critically, you will be able to make decisions safely, accurately, and logically. As manager, I want to eliminate irrelevant, inconsistent and illogical thoughts as I reason about client care. I must be willing to seek answers to questions or concerns, and tolerate others' views. Every ethical theory mean and how it can be applied to certain situations. I might not have been able to name my ethical framework some time ago, but I certainly had a clear grasp of what it was. Now it seems I am less ignorant; however, more confused.

I guess if I had to classify my moral framework now, I would consider myself primarily an Intuitionist, though I can definitely see where a Utilitarian is coming from. Within each of us, we may have a bit of absolutism and also relativism in our personal ethical systems. We might approach our decision making at work with a more utilitarian approach. We have to keep the goals and objectives of the business in mind when making decisions even when we have to fire someone we like or admire. Or because one department is more desperately in need of additional personnel, we might not allow another department to hire a needed person at this time. At the same time, politically, we might favor a Moral Rights approach to legislative decision-making.

Moral Rights activists keep the issues of Gun Control, Abortion, and Assisted Suicide alive. The significant thing is that, just as we approach decision making from many different approaches, so, too, other people may, also, approach decision making from different approaches. We cannot judge other peoples actions based upon our own ethical positions. I support Intuitionism the most because I feel that any rational person knows what is right and wrong. Take murder for instance. Any rational person, whether 7 years of age or 90 years of age, knows that murder is wrong.

With that in mind, if a person murders another person they should be punished to the maximum that the courts allow. There is, however, a problem with Intuitionism, it does not seem to solve the less obvious dilemmas, such as abortion. It is then when I look to Utilitarianism for my answer. I look at it this way the world is full of enough grief and sorrow that if the answer is not obvious through our intuition then we may as well try to create the most good for the most number of people.

So when looking at abortion I feel you must see which option creates the most good for the most people. If killing the unborn child is best for most, then I feel you are permissible to do so. If it creates more bad than good, then you are prohibited. So, how do we deal with all these ethical approaches?

We acknowledge them, respect them, and appreciate the different approaches when making decisions and when encountering decisions, which others have made. We can be less quick to judge others, knowing that there are different ways to approach a decision. Finally, we can assess whether our own decision-making represents the best approach in the situations in which we find ourselves All in all, this course has taught me to analyze situations more and realize that not everything is so clear-cut. Life is much more complicated than just flipping a coin to make important decisions. The right decisions take time to come up with and deserve to be thought out. Thus ethics is an extremely important part of a persons individuality.

Ethics play an extremely important role in my life and I am always working on becoming a better person each day. It will be something that I will never perfect but I will always look for new ways to improve myself and help educate others on how to improve themselves.
