Martin Luther and Erasmus Dear Desiderius Erasmus, I am bound to tell you that the ideas, which you express in your works reflect the necessity of changes in the contemporary society and in the role of church in the society. Time has come for a complete Reformation and you will be the indisputable intellectual father of this Reformation. The main idea of the Reformation would be a complete renovation of contemporary Church. In your works, such as "Arabia", and "Colloquia" you give a strong critique of Christian doctrine and philosophy. I should agree with you that Church has lost its evangelical simplicity and turned to philosophy, which is alien for a contemporary person. Under grand ceremonialism the Christian idea ceases to be seen.

A person goes through such ceremonies without consciousness instead of devoting his mind and soul to the idea of eternal salvation. Or, worse, some people disregard Church as something unimportant and only nominally belong to some religion. The result of such political and ethical stagnation of Church is evident in the contemporary society. People do not take close to hearts the ideas of holiness and good deeds. People do not consciously apply to the idea of such disciplinary Christian facts as holy relics prayers and Holy Bible in time of Global terrorism and multiple regional wars. The task of Church is to cease philosophic debates and become closer to people both spiritually and physically.

We live in a difficult and dangerous time where metaphysical speculations and discussions of mysteries don't help to solve problems. But referring your ideas I should state that there is doubtfully any model of moral life exists without referring to the context of the Holy Bible. You mention the ethical philosophy of Christ, but deny the concept of fundamental principles. I completely disagree with you on this point. When in general your ideas are revolutionary, you are wrong in details. It should never be denied that the Bible is the only source of faith and its purpose is to inspire and lead people through life.

We observe day by day how corrupted the society is and the root of it is the original sin. People loose faith and people loose God's justification. You cannot disagree that faith is the way for full pardon of sin. If contemporary Church were able to deliver this idea to the masses, people would know that all deeds are the work of God. If people come to understanding that everything is done by the Gods will, they would become more aggressive. Every aggression begets aggression, every Christian may see it.

And here I again should agree with you, no ceremonies or garish worships are needed. Every person can become his own priest and carry the idea of faith and salvation. The role of Church here is the education of people so that they would carry this idea in life. Dear Martin Luther, I was greatly flattered when you proclaimed me a righteous father of Reformation. I could not fail to notice that you have indeed followed my ideas to such an extent.

But that was so only to some extent. As I understood, you agree with my philosophy in its essence but disagree in details. I, in turn, should point out that we have different perceptions as of what is essence and what can be described as details. I really believe that the Christian Church in its present state cannot satisfy the needs of people or become the leading force in their choices. Especially, as you correctly mentioned, in this difficult and dangerous time Church should offer strength and consolation. But in what state can you see Church when you deny the idea of pope and clergymen?

As noticeable politician you should have notices that common public should always follow the refined and scholarly minds, which, in their turn influence the masses. And the reformation of Church should consist in influencing the life instead of negotiating about mystics. The Church should support the leaders strong leaders who possess moral values and rule the masses, but it should not deny the consequent hierarchy or people would turn into not ruled crowd. Do you not see that your ideas of religious movement begat only commotion, moral disorganization, and the interruption, if not the complete ruin, of learned studies?

You also said that you disagree with my concept of moral life. I should explain why I deny fundamental principles of Holy Bible. I do not believe in formalistic behavior order referring morality. Morality of a person or society cannot be restricted by strict rules that remind laws. All moral doctrines are based on training of soul and faith, but they are impossible to follow in contemporary society. The democracy ideas of contemporary society are based on freedom, but at the same time, this society abounds with rules and regulations.

And every behavior regulation should have its logical or ethical explanation. That is why in the society the ideas of moral life cannot be introduces as holiness of good works, but more like philosophy of Christ, essentially natural ethical ideas that should guide human actions. Yes, it pains me to observe the contemporary life reality. For all my life and in all my works I proclaimed only the ideas of peace and humanity.

The events in the contemporary society prove that Church has opted out of the political influence and the society is torn by various moral diseases. And here how I see the utmost importance of Church influence. The moral and ethical ideas are the main values that Christian or any other Church should carry into masses. I understand Church not as the assortment of doctrines and rules, which are surrounded by religious ceremonials, but I understand it as the ethical and moral educator, which helps people consciously come to the universal ideas of humanity.
