Reflection Paper There is no doubt that becoming a nurse had challenged me on individual and professional levels. First of all, it made me to become a more patient person, since without this quality one can hardly expect to become successful in the field of nursing. Yet, this wasnt easy. The pressures of modern living inevitably cause even mentally stable individual to lose some of its calmness, especially while facing repetitive situations. I personally learned to see something unique in every patient I deal with, so that taking care of him would not only be confined to the technicalities. While making me happier with my job, it also contributes to the general well-being of my patients, because they feel that it is their individuality that is being appreciated.

This corresponds to another quality, which I developed during the course an ability to listen to patients never-ending stories, as if I was really interested in them. It proved impossible, on my part, to pay genuine interest to patients stories, as some of my teachers demanded. Nevertheless, I can still perform my duties effectively by playing along. As practice shows, patients critical ability is substantially undermined, during the time of illness, therefore they are not very demanding, when it comes to making conversation. The third thing that I learned is the fact that about 50 % of what speeds up the process of recovery, are various psychological factors. Patient can successfully recover by taking pills that dont contain any medicinal ingredients at all, for as long as he firmly believes that these pills will help him to combat the illness.

That is why I think it is important to constantly assure patients that theyre getting better, even if their situation is hopeless. My challenge, in this case, was purely psychological, yet I proved to be able to master the convincing techniques, as its being required during the course. I also learned do not be afraid to take the initiative when its required. Often doctors are not present at the time, when the immediate medicinal help is needed. In order for the nurse to become a real professional, she needs to posses a quick mind and be able to not just routinely execute her duties, but to also be prepared to deal with a challenges that had never been a part of her routine, up to the date. In my opinion, the nursing will face the following three challenges and changes in the near future: 1).

Under staffing. Even now this problem is very acute, due to the fact that there are no many encouraging factors that would convince individual to pursue career in nursing. Also, there are numerous rules and regulations in this field, which lead to creation of certain confusion, as the aftermath of Katrina had effectively proven. The maintaining of appropriate nurse-per-patient ratio in many communities can only be accomplished by inviting nurses from abroad. 2). With American society becoming more and more multicultural, the nurses will be required to adjust their functions accordingly. In the future, it might be required from every potential nurse to be at least bilingual, in order to graduate.

Also, since theyll be required to address multicultural patients emotional needs, nurses will have to be much more sensitive. The Western conventional morality is built on Christianity, but mentioning Jesus to a Muslim patient can only worsen the situation. Therefore, nurses will have to learn a far greater deal of political correctness than it is required nowadays. 3). As it is being mentioned earlier, the medicinal ethics in USA are based on Christianity, but we have more and more people from different cultural backgrounds coming to this country. Therefore, the medicinal ethics in the future will be revised. In my opinion, the problem of overpopulation will affect nursing, as only those worthy of living will be cared for.

This, of course, will put a big emotional strain on those nurses that are being taught to provide care to the patient no matter what. Yet, in the future, the euthanasia is going to be legalized, in order to deal with terminally ill patients. The medical care will be only reserved to those, whom such care can really help. Therefore, in my opinion, one of the most important qualities that the future nurses will have to posses is going to be ethical flexibility.
