The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Robert Frosts poem The Road Not Taken is a poem with numerous meaning, every person will find a meaning of his own in the poem. This poem is a metaphoric poem, with the main theme of it saying that the life of a person is just a crossroad and you always have the choice of going one way or the other: either going on a road that his been traveled on a lot following everybody, or choosing a road that you will be a pioneer on (meaning the discovery of the road will be all yours). As Robert Frost, himself, has noted once in an interview, during the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, 23 August 1953: "Do not follow where the path may lead... Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. " (2) In the second line of the poem it is said that: And sorry I could not travel both, this line led to the understanding of the main nature of human beings, you always want to be able to have everything, but it is not possible, you can only make one choice at a time and thus take only one road at a time. This always leads you to taking a long time to think and evaluate, which road is a better choice: And looked down one as far as I could. You always try to make predictions and assumptions of different sorts before making a decision, but no matter how hard you try to look ahead on the path you never truly know what is waiting for you.

Then took the other, just as fair, and having perhaps the better claim this road was believed to be better because nobody has taken this road before It was grassy and wanted wear. This line also shows the use of such literary device as personification, meaning the road is not a living person and cannot have feelings. In this passage shows the real character of the person, traveler, who is having the difficulty of making choices. This person is not a follower, he is a leader.

This meaning becomes even clearer when we keep in mind the reason why this poem had been written. This poem was written by Robert Frost for his friend who went to war. This friend did not make an easy decision, it was a very tough one, and he did not have a clear view of where this road will bring him to: will he live or die in the end of his journey. This person was an individual since he wanted to be pioneer opening a road that was not traveled on. The poem also shows a moment that every person faces before making a certain decision in his life.

When you face a decision you always think that nobody before has ever faced such a problem: And both that morning equally lay in leaves no step had trodden black. The ground was covered with leaves, which were untouched, meaning no other foot has stepped there, nobody has passed by on this road this road was brand new and untouched for long time, or perhaps ever. Although the traveler in the poem chooses the road that has not been used so often, he still leaves a chance for himself to come back and perhaps have a chance to actually try the second road as well: I kept the first for another day! . This line is said not without regret due to the deep understanding of the traveler that there might not be a chance to actually try the new path: Yet knowing how way leads to a way, I doubted if I should ever be back. In life once you make a decision it is very hard to change the path if you have started walking on it, due to the simple fact that you just cannot turn the time back and second chances are not given easily. Keeping in mind Frosts friend, we can assume that he hoped to come back alive and than be able to take the road which would have led him to a peaceful life, instead of the war.

In the very end of the poem a sad tone starts hanging over the poem: I shall tell with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence. After years of life every person looks back to what he has done, and realizes that maybe if he had taken the other road everything would be different, but still there is a tone of pride because despite all the person is in peace with himself for taking the road that he believed was the right one: And I took one less traveled by, And that made all the difference. The language used in this poem is very simple, and maybe at some points this simplicity can take you off guard, but once you read in you realize the deeper hidden meaning, not a single meaning, but rather a different meaning for each person. This poem makes you remember that no matter what you do in life, you have to be in peace with yourself and be proud of the decisions you have made. Literature used 1.
