Essentials of higher education Real education should educate us out of self into something far finer; into a selflessness which links us with all humanity, said Nancy Astor and he was absolutely right. Indeed what is a real education? What should college students be taught in the higher educational institutions so that they could say: I am a real educated man? How our education is formed and what shapes the effectiveness of our university knowledge? It is impossible to get great college education without attending elementary and high school.
Every one of us goes to the elementary school in order to get the basic knowledge of how to memorize, observe and experience different situations as well as to learn how to evaluate, analyze and act in the latter. We are taught how to train our memory, write and read as well as how to communicate and get a long with people of different ages. In other words elementary and middle schooling give children the basic knowledge of the skills that might be crucial to survive in their further grown-up lives. We than go to the high school in order to deepen our knowledge in various spheres of study. We lean how to calculate, how to write good book reports and other essays on different topics.
We learn the history of our country, chemistry, biology and other necessary classes. We graduate from the high school with the sufficient luggage of knowledge for our further life. And here we face with the choice whether to go to college or not. We ask ourselves: What does it give me for my future life? What do they teach me and why?
I want to look closely on what are the essentials of the higher education? What are the things that are very crucial in college education that might be irreplaceable in our lives? Thinking about this question I realized that there are three things that are very important in higher education. I believe that these things contribute a lot to our personal development as well as to our professional growth. First of all I believe that every college student should be taught Bible. I might sound funny because we usually learn it at high school.
But as many other things we forget when we dont face it everyday the same happens with the Biblical studies. We learn a lot of things in our lives and when we see and feel them everyday makes us remember then for a long time. For example, we learn various formulas and equations at the Calculus class. We remember them lets say for several months, because it is a fresh memory.
But if we dont apply these rules in our everyday life we quickly start to forget them. Of course it is hard to equate Calculus Class with Biblical studies but I believe the concept is the same. Yes, many people bear the Word of God in their harts. But these are so many others who dont feel it right away.
People make so many mistakes and dont realize that it might be because of their biblical ignorance. And I believe that there are many students at colleges that are not aware of this. Thats why it is my firm belief that Biblical studies should be present in the college class schedule at least one semester. And I think it is what should guide us in our every day life.
Whether we just study at college or we work in the serious company we should follow the Biblical rules. It is what makes people kinder and open-hearted towards each other. And the attitude that we build towards each other at colleges might be helpful in our work sphere or vise versa. Biblical studies should be one of the compulsory classes at any higher educational institution. Every student no matter what profession he / she has chosen should be taught the essentials of Bible. The next thing that I believe is the essentials of the higher education is Principles of Ethics.
It lies pretty close to the Biblical studies, but it concerns more the working sphere that every student will face sooner or later. Ethics is the study of morality and moral behavior. The study of ethics encompasses moral norms applicable to business corporations, political bodies, medical organizations, colleges and universities, churches, sects, and so on, as well as individuals. Ethics, morals, beliefs, and values are formed in different societies. A society set its own rules for its own community. People within their community tend to think and act according to what they are taught by their own society leaders, family, and friends, etc.
As people grow older to choose and make their own decision, they take responsibilities in which they apply their own ethics, beliefs, morals, and values. As we are the American citizens and we live in this society we should know and share our ethical believes no matter what sphere it might concern. Every college student should be taught the essentials of Ethical Principles and later should apply them at the working place. Principles of Ethics might be crucial in our working environment. If we, as students, get familiar with the basics of Ethical behavior at work we try to follow these guidelines in our professional life.
Job discrimination, sexual harassment, Utilitarian approach and other very important points of Ethical studies should be presented in every college and university. Following the Biblical rules in our every day life is not the same as following ethical principles in our professional sphere. And where else accept college or university students get a close look at what is Professional Ethics and what is right or wrong. Yes mostly it is a common sense but there are some many aspects that we are not familiar with until we learn it at college. What job conditions does a pregnant woman have?
How should she be treated at work? Most of the college students dont know these rules because they havent faced it in their everyday life yet. And this is just a tiny part of what we, being college students, should be familiar with. Some a college graduate will go to work, some day he / she will become CEO of a huge company.
This is when these ethical principles will play a crucial role in his / her professional life. And working sphere is not the only place where we can apply these Ethical Principles. That is why I believe that it is number 2 that should be considered as the essentials of the higher education. The last but, of course, not the least thing that I believe should be taught at all higher educational institutions is Cultural Studies. I want to say that it is hard to understand other cultures when you misunderstand your own one. It is hard to say what you would do or feel if your belonged to this or that race and had this or that cultural background.
College life should inculcate the desire for a cultural learn and the desire to be curious to look at others cultures in order to try to understand them. Most of the times we dont understand people who belong to other cultures. And as a matter of fact there are a lot of foreign student at colleges and universities. Every one of us might find him / herself at the same place. Cultural Studies make us less ignorant to the different aspects of lives of other nations.
We look at them for a different point of view. And this again might be very helpful in our future professional life. A person might work in a huge multinational company and have a lot of business trips across the world. He / she might face the opportunity to work in a different country or be a representative in the different office across the ocean. This is when the Cultural Studies would become a great help. College students should be familiar with various cultural values and characteristics of other nations in order to understand other people.
This is not only helpful in the professional life and working sphere, but also for a personal development and erudition. Concluding my essay I want to say that higher education and the three essentials that I have named contribute to our personal and professional development a lot. Biblical Studies and Cultural studies bring about positive changes in our moral values and attitudes towards other people and studies of the Ethical Principles make us less ignorant in the working sphere and give us more confidence in our rights at work.
