To begin with I believe that the first and probably the most important event in the Floridas history and development was, of course, its discovery. Floridas peninsula first has been found when Columbus made his first voyage to the New Land in 1492. But the real historical records of this land indeed started when Juan Ponce de Len the Spanish adventures and explorer arrived in 1513. In the beginning of April this man with his crew landed in the north-east cost of Florida. This place is now called St. Augustine.

Juan Ponce de Leyn had named the land in honor of the Spanish festival that they had during the Easter time. And from that time La Florida has been opened for new people, new discoveries and new opportunities. In 1521 Ponce de Leyn has made the second voyage now to the south-western coast of Florida. He landed with desire to conquer and colonize the land. Ponce de Leyn saw great treasures that had been hidden in the lands of the peninsula. But his attempt to possess all that together with the attempt to colonize has filed because of the stubborn resistance from the native people.

In 1539 another Spanish explorer Heard de Soto together with his men came to Florida in search of silver and gold. He spent 4 years wandering on the south-eastern costs of present United State with the hopes of discovering the Indians wealth. But he failed and died not getting any success. Since its discovery Floridas lands had been discovered and explored many times.

Many new Spanish conquistadors had come in search of gold and silver. They didnt get much but their stories about the new land had given other Europeans some information about the presence of such peninsula and its connection to Mexico and Cuba from which the Spanish sailors sent the found treasure. Indeed not only Spain was interested in the Floridas lands and treasure. France also has found its peninsula very attractive and rich.

The French explorations stared in 1562 from the voyage of Jean Ribault, a French Protestant. From the beginning of Floridas exploration in 1513 till almost 1600 the great battles and attracts took place among Spanish, French and English explorers. Every nation wanted to colonize the land and possess its treasures. But till that time the Spanish power over Florida was not questioned at all. When in 1607 the first English settlers arrived to Floridas peninsula they established their first colonies.

English colonists were eager to capture and control all the natural resources of the land and slowly moved the Spanish invaders to the south. At the same time the explorers from France moved to the east. Several battles took place between 1700 and 1740 that really weakened the Spanish control over Florida. In 1763 the British people gained control over the peninsula by giving Havana as an exchange with Spain. During the British control of Florida the peninsula was divided into two parts: East Florida and West Florida.

These two Floridas remained under the control of England during the years of the War for American Independence. This time was very crucial in the history of the Floridas development. Spain also took part in this war and fought on the side of natives and France. The battle for the Pensacola that was taken away from England in 1781 was one of the largest and the cruelest battle ever happened on the lands of Florida. The rest of Florida was given to Spain on the peaceful conditions of the treaty that ended the American Revolution. The second Spanish control over Florida lasted from 1783 till 1821.

In 1783 Spain controlled all of Floridas lands. Spanish colonists offered very favorable conditions as to the acquisition of the lands. They were called land grants. Many run away slaves came to settle in Florida as it was the place where they couldnt be reached by their masters. There were numerous rebels from the Americans to get Florida back from Spain.

Finally in 1819 due to the courage and brave general Andrew Jackson Spain agreed to give Florida back actually not asking any money for it. Finally in 1821 Florida formally belonged to the United Sates on the terms of the Adams-Ones Treaty. And I believe it the second very important event in the Floridas history. In 1821 Andrew Jackson came to Florida to establish the territorial government that US had told him. Belonging now to the US Floridas lands were very attractive to other people from Georgia, Virginia and the Carolinas. In 1824 the two Floridas had been combined together.

The population of Florida was growing very fast and the US government had decided to remove Indians from their lands. This was because the lands that Indians were lining on were very attractive to the white people. This war with Indians lasted more than 40 years. A huge sum of money and a lot of human lives was the price for the US to move the Indians from Florida.

The third very important event in Floridas development happened in 1845, March 3. This was the day when Florida was announced to be the twenty-seventh state belonging to the United States. William D. Moseley was proclaimed as the first states governor.

Floridas population had grown up to the 87, 445 people in 1850. From that time the question about slavery became vital. The biggest part of Floridas population at that time was young white people who were not really against slavery. But they were very concerned with the position of Northerners towards this problem. Thats why during presidential elections Floridas inhabitants didnt vote for Abraham Lincoln who, as it is known, belonged to the Republican Party and wanted to abolish slavery. Concluding my essay I would like to say that Florida came through a tough period of its development from the time of its discovery to the presidential elections of 1860.

Numerous battles were fought between Spanish, French, British and US troops to get control over its lands. But finally it became under the control of US. And I believe it should be that way!
