Several days ago I had a great conversation with one of my parents acquaintances. He is an old teacher of an English class who had been working in a school with 50 % of children with learning disabilities for more that 15 years. Mister X (let me call him that way) is an excellent tutor and had a great experience in his field. His classroom management and his techniques for teaching are quite similar to what we have studies.

But what I must say is that his own attitude towards kids with learning troubles is worth of admiration. Those kids (with learning disabilities) were like other normal kids but they had problems of learning disabilities like dyslexia, dyscalcula, dysgraphia, visual, and audio difficulties. Those were children of sixth grade who experienced difficulties in writing skills, oral skills, study skills, reading skills, math skills, and social ones. I couldnt tell it from the first site, because those children were like others in appearance and behavior. But when I stayed at Mr. Xs class I saw those differences that were pretty much vivid.

After the class I interview Mr. X and this is what our conversation was about. I: Can you tell what in your point of view is the learning disability and what can be done to improve the basic skills of learning disabled children? Mr.

X: I can say that most of us know, or are taught when we are young how to process information and develop an organized plan or strategy when we face some problem either it is social, academic or any other related one. In our school there are almost 50 % of children who are likely to have some kind of learning disability. And they find such cognitive processes quite difficult. I must admit that learning disabilities have been recognized as disabilities not long ago. This neurological disorder causes difficulty in organizing information received, remembering them, and expressing information and therefore affects a person's basic function such as reading, writing, comprehension, and reasoning. However, we follow and sometimes adapt many effective learning strategies that will help them approach tasks more effectively.

I: It was hard for me to identify your tactics and approaches from just one class. Can you tell me how do you work with kids who are disabled together with normal ones? What specific tactics or approaches do you use? Mr. X: I always try to provide an equal education and learning process for every child in my class and treat them all fairly.

But of course I realize that some children learn differently or much slower than the majority of the students. These students who are learning disabled, have to have extra instructional attention from me or other teachers and parents than someone who has normal learning abilities. We use direct lecture and discussion to teach these kids memorization and study skills. We organized here small interactive groups that are more effective than large ones. Kids with educational disabilities usually work more effectively when they are in smaller groups with more special attention from the teacher rather than a in large group.

They are also less reluctant to answer and ask questions than avoiding doing so in a larger group. These methods gave as some increase of students ability in the areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and creativity. I: If you would make a very short guide, say for 5 - 6 suggestion to young teachers who are going to teach students whoa re learning disabled what would you put there? Mr.

X: Well, each school and each teacher has his own specific way of ways to learn such kids and improve their basic skills. What I believe are primarily things to do and use are: Seat students with LD as near as possible to the teacher, but still including them as part as the regular classroom. It keeps them from any distractions Always ask questions in a clarifying manner, then have the students with learning disabilities describe his or her understanding of the questions. 3) Use if possible an overhead projector with an outline of the lesson or unit of the day. This makes the teaching process much easier and more understandable for such kids. 4) Reduce course load for student with learning disabilities. 5) Give Credit for any kind of a childs participation in class. There might be lots of various strategies and tactics that teachers use and imply to the children with learning disabilities, and it depends on many factors like grade, type of disability, childrens behavior and attitude toward studies and so on. Again each and every teacher or a tutor has his / her own ones.

And what is more important is to treat such kids as normal ones and never show them that they are less developed or less valued than others. These are just a small portion of what we have talked about. Mr. X.

knowledge and techniques were very similar to what we have studied. But on the other hand he showed one thing that I didnt get before on classes. That was his attitude towards his work. He was very glad to be a teacher of such kids and he showed a great patience towards their drawbacks and problems.

I think, that each tutor has to be first of all a good and patient person inside and then know all the techniques and strategies to be used. Of course we, as educators, must make it our priority to include every student in our curriculum and continue to educate ourselves on the new methods to helping the students that need it the most.
