British Literature British Literature 2322 1. A. Lilliput: A place where people are six inches high, and Gulliver, in comparison, is a giant, or a "Man-Mountain, " as they call him. He becomes involved with the domestic and international dealings of the Lilliputian government. B. Brobdingnag: This is the place where Gulliver finds himself being the small person among the giant Brobdingnagians.
After a short stint as a working freak, Gulliver is rescued by the king and queen and lives a life of considerable comfort at court. He spends much of his time learning the language and talking with the king about life in England. C. Laputa: This flying island and some of its colonies nearby is Gulliver's first stop, where the inhabitants have one eye turned inward and one eye turned up to the sky- they " re thinking always of their own speculations (inward) and of lofty issues in mathematics, astronomy and music (upward). Struldbrugs: They are a race of people who live forever in the island of Luggnagg. They do not have eternal youth, though; rather, they grow perpetually older, more feeble, miserable, and useless. H. Houyhnhnms: There are horses in the island of the Houyhnhnms. They are intrigued by the fact that Gulliver, although similar in appearance to the Yahoo, is cleaner and wears clothes.
He tries to talk to them but can only distinguish two words in their language: Yahoo and Houyhnhnm. After they are done discussing their discovery they lead him to their homes. It is when Gulliver arrives there that he really begins to find out what is going on. He sees that these horses are masters over the hideous creatures.
I. Yahoo: These are hideously scary, hairy beasts resembling monkeys without tails who hurl excrement at Gulliver on an island to be his first of quests in his adventure. Upon further interaction with the Houyhnhnms, Gulliver begins to understand their language and can interact with them. He shows them how to write and tells them of the mutiny that landed him on their island. The Houyhnhnms were unable to understand when he tried to get across the notion of a lie. There was no known word in the Houyhnhnm language for lie.
However, they did tell him what the word Houyhnhnm means; it means perfection of nature J. John Nicholas He is the captain of the merchant-ship of three hundred tons, bound for Surat. They distinguish their parties by the height of the heels n their shoes, and how they eat their eggs.
B. Brobdingnag The people are six inches tall. On this island Swift continues to make fun of English politics. This time Gulliver is looked upon like he looked upon the Lilliputians while the Brobdingnag's represent English ways.
Swift makes fun of the way that the people of Brobdingnag go about their daily life. Swift is basically stating that all people, royalty or servant, are all alike. The king emerges as a fair, merciful ruler and a very sympathetic and humane man. Gulliver, in contrast, seems as petty, vindictive, and cruel as the Lilliputians C. Island of Laputa While on the island, Swift compares the way the people act on the island to the way people in the 18 th century talked about scientific discoveries. The people of Laputa are such airheads that they are on an island that floats in the air.
The Laputans on the floating island are so distracted with everyday life that they do not even notice that their wives are cheating on them right in front of them, just like some people of today do D. Luggnagg In Luggnagg, Gulliver meets people who will live forever and try to get him to join them, but he will not because they are living forever in pain. Most people want to live forever and fantasize about it, but it is not what it seems to be. E.
The Land of the Yahoos and the Houyhnhnms Horses rule the land and the humans are the animals. The Houyhnhnms are the horses that create a peaceful and ordered society and the Yahoos are the beasts. Swift creates this part of the story in order to criticize how humans act like animals and are uncivilized, like we think animals are. The Yahoos are put in cages like humans put animals in cages.
Again, this is a satire to criticize how humans are just like animals. To Swift the Yahoos represent what man must strive to overcome, while the Houyhnhnms represent what life would be like with out passion and emotion. Fortunately for Gulliver the horses house him in his own quarters between themselves and the Yahoos Swift thinks that humans need to be with other humans in order to become civilized because the Yahoos were stranded on the land and had kids after kids, and never got to see what real human life is like. 3. A. The Unholy Trinity and their actions, and the city of their residence. This is an allegorical story about the Christian religion.
It allegorizes the journey of a Christian into the Celestial City, which represents heaven. His journey to the Celestial City is a journey every Christian must face in their lifetime before allowed into heaven. B. Christians ultimate destination and its significance Christians ultimate destination is finding his path to Heaven by being faithful, hopeful and determined. Within his journey there are many obstacles such as temptations both tangible and intangible for instance, the merchandises sold at Vanity Fair and the shortcuts offered, illustrate temptations real Christians must face and overcome; finding an easy way into heaven, and being thrown off course by material things. Because of these answers the fair people thought of them as causing chaos and disorder at the fair and therefore beat and placed them into cages so all the men at the fair could watch. Yet again the two were taken to the examiners and were charged of being guilty and they beat them pitifully, and hanged irons upon them, and led them in chains up and down the Fair, for an example and a terror to others E. What is allegory and how is it used in Pilgrims Progress? Allegory is the representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form.
