I read the book A World Destroyed: Hiroshima and the Origins of the Arms Race written by Martin J. Sherwin. I thoroughly enjoyed reading on Hiroshima. Throughout many history classes at different schools I have learned a great deal on Hiroshima, but have found many things in this book that have struck my attention. I really overly enjoyed reading this book, I have learned many new things. I learned many things in this book that I will explain.

On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B- 29 bomber named the Enola Gay flew over the industrial city of Hiroshima, Japan and dropped the first atomic bomb ever. The city went up in flames caused by the immense power equal to about 20, 000 tons of TNT. This obviously was a huge success, this scary project. I learned that this project was made by unpredictable assemblage of civilian people, and military scientific brain power-brilliant, intense, and young people. The isolated mountain setting, known as Los Alamos, New Mexico, was the sight to design and build the bomb that would end World War II, but begin serious controversies concerning its sheer power and destruction. I became interested in this topic because of my interest in science and history.

It seemed an appropriate topic to read because we are presently studying World War II in my history class. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings were always taught to me with some opinion and I always wanted to know the bomb itself and the unbiased effects that it had. This book was a great opportunity for me to read into the bombings myself. I found that the Manhattan project was the code name for the US effort during World War II to produce the atomic bomb.

It was appropriately named for the Manhattan Engineer District of the US Army Corps of Engineers, because much of the early research was done in New York City. Sparked by the refugee physicists in the US the program was slowly organized after Nuclear fission was expressed the fear that Hitler would attempt to build a fission bomb. I am so glad that Hitler did not make the first fission bomb but if he would of made the bomb first he could have dropped it on all of the Jewish countries so they wouldnt of had to go through such pain to live. I also learned that General Groves initial task had been to select a scientific director of the bomb project. That never really ended up happening though, to this day the presidents wished that they would have had appointed someone else as leader of the Atomic bomb. General Groves was a perfect worker, but made the process take much longer than it really needed to take.

The one serious incident that I found interesting was that of the hiring of Klaus Fuchs. He was later found, and convicted of obtaining secret documents and sending them to the Soviet Union. A competent and hardworking scientist himself, Fuchs enabled the Soviet Union to create his or her own atomic bomb. The names were not allowed to be mentioned outside the laboratory. Everyone was a sir or mister instead of his or her own name. Unless they worked at the lab themselves, wives knew nothing of their husbands research.

I really thought that back in the 1940 s there werent secret missions between countries. I learned that the Hiroshima model is known as a gun-barrel-type atomic bomb. Ever since the dawn of time man has found new ways of killing each other. The most destructive way of killing people known to man would have to be the atomic bomb. I feel that the atomic bomb should have never been dropped, it was not necessary.

The reason in the book why the atomic bomb is so destructive is because when it is detonated, it has more than one effect. The effects of the atomic bomb are so great that Nikita Khrushchev said that, the survivors would envy the dead. (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, 1982) These devastating physical effects come from the atomic bombs blast, the atomic bombs thermal radiation, and the atomic bombs nuclear radiation. I found in the book that there are several types of atomic bomb uses. The several kinds are a gun type atomic bomb and the second type of atomic bomb is an implosion bomb.

I found out some interesting facts from the book about the Atomic Bomb. The blast from an atomic bombs explosion will last for only one-half to one second, but in this amount of time a great deal of damage is done. A fireball is created by the blast, which consists mainly of dust on humans or their environment. However, as the gasses expand a blast wave is produced.

As this blast wave moves, it creates static overpressure. This static overpressure has the power to crush buildings. The dynamic pressure creates winds, which have the power to blow down trees. The blast pressure and fireball together only last for approximately eleven seconds, but because it contains fifty percent of the atomic bombs latent energy a great deal of destruction occurs.

Some interesting facts about the statistics of Hiroshima I found throughout the book. The total number killed was one hundred and eight teen thousand six hundred and sixty-one. The total number severely injured was thirty thousand five hundred and twenty-four. The number slightly injured was forty-eight thousand six hundred and seventy-seven. With statistics like these, I see that Pope John Paul II was right when he said, Any nuclear war would inevitably cause death, disease, and suffering of pandemic proportions and without the possibility of effective medical intervention. The only hope for humanity is prevention of any form of Nuclear War. (A World Destroyed) I feel that this book was one of the best in explaining the hardships and the experiences of Hiroshima.

It was a scary and sad thing that happened and so these examples that I have found in the book about Hiroshima will hopefully be the first and the last time that the power of the atomic bomb will ever be used. Bibliography:
