My Family In the 1995 movie called My family the story of Sanchez family closely parallels with the history of the state of California. My family is the first significant movie by and about Mexican-Americans in all our diversity. This is a chronicle of one family over three generations, from its origins in Mexico and parts of the U. S. that earlier belonged to Mexico, through the immigrant experience and that of first and second generation Chicano / as in Los Angeles from the 1920 s to the present.

This film was written, directed, and acted by filmmakers who are of the culture they are depicting on screen. The theme of this story is that this country has been populated by millions of humans from around the globe. People from Mexico escape religious persecution, economic disaster, or warfare. And too many of these immigrants have been tragically abused by the system that was designed to welcome them and protect them. The time period that this movie takes place was after the Revolution and the Great Depression had just begun, therefore we see how closely is the story of Sanchez interrelates with US history, and particularly history of the State of California.

The great depression was the was economic slump ever in U. S. History. The depression began in 1929 and lasted fr abut a decade.

The main cause fr the great depression was the combination f the greatly unequal distribution f wealth. What this film tells us abut the Mexican-American population is that family is the mst important thing in a persons life and the strength f the Latin family. California was at big greed during the Great Depression period as well as other states of US. The film is closely tiger to the problems that were of the main concern to people during 1920 s. Sanchez's family got to California during those difficult times and thus we see the correlations between the state struggles as well as the immigrant families struggles for their well being. Sanchezs family were working hard in order to get their independence of life misfortunes thus moving the state towards getting out of the depression period.

The film started in a small village in Mexico in the year f 1926 when Jse Sanchez (Jan Vargas) me across t California t lk fr a better living. Jse Sanchez was always working in the miles (crn in the back and beans in the from). Then came the day that everything changed, when Maria (Jse's wife) didnt cme hme frm the market. It was the time f the great depression.

This is because the government officials of California wanted to make Mexicanos lives harder, because they thought that this Great Depression was due to these immigrants. This government actions are a historical fact, and Sanchez's family had to cope with those difficulties themselves. The Southern Pacific railroad made the U. S. government a deal, fr $ 14. 75 a head, they tk the mexicans all the way back int Central Mexico, having they wouldnt be able t get back.

Here we see that an important deal that happened in the area between the Sough Pacific railroad with U. S. government, in which the main heros of the story took part as workers for the railroad construction. Sanchezs buried El Califrnia in the backyard.

He left a will, left everything t Jse Sanchez. But El Califrnia made it clear that he didnt want anything t d with the church r the piece government. He wanted t be buried right behind the huse under the cornfield. El Califrnia said exactly what he wanted written n his grave marker Dn Alexander Vazquez (El Califrnia) died in 1934. Maria and his sn Chuch also died in the terrifying river. They made it across but Chuch was very sick and was taken t sme Indian ladies t cure him. Tw years had passed and Maria finally made it hme with his sn Chuch. The family was again together after a real lng struggle Maria had made.

Then they had a few mre children and they were living happily and they als had problems with their children, they were struggling with their children. The main characters in the film were: Pac wh became a writer, Irene wh had her family restaurant, Tni wh married a priest, Mem wh was a lawyer, Jimmy wh became a gd father, and Chuch wh was killed by the cps. Finally, the mst important, the parents wh made the family, Jse and Maria. Those people represent the Mexican American community that appear to be the greatest part of California history because their representation was very strong back than, as well as it is nowadays. As Jse's family girls and the world changes, s d the triumphs and struggles in the family.

Consequently we see the events of historical importance that happened in California during this life story telling cycle. These film feature three male faces, the female characters are as diverse and fully realized in the film as are the men. Overall this was a pretty good and interesting movie that has historical roots in it. I would recommend this film to all people interested in the historical development of California State and also for those interested in Mexican American traditions and heritage.
