There are a lot of great works about American Presidents: Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. But there is the only one about both of them. John Milton Cooper in his work: The Warrior and the Priest: Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt estimates strong and weak sides of their policy. It is evident that Roosevelt and Wilson were the political giants of a large period of American History.

Though they were in conflict with each other they both possessed deep and extraordinary intellect. Thats why if one wants to have the entire picture about one of them it is necessary to know some facts from the political life of another. The period, shown by John Milton Cooper in his work, is known as Pivotal Decades (1900 - 1920). It is because of great changes in internal affairs as well as in foreign ones.

It was a period of reforms, provided by Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt. Their lives and characteristics are in parallel and in chronological sequence in the book. The author was a great historian and a writer and knew much about both leaders. And what is the most important he respected them. The Warrior and the Priest is a great biographical study, presenting all positive and negative sides of both men.

Wilsons and Roosevelt's ideas had great influence in every sphere of American life for many decades. In the work Cooper employed a controversial theme. He paid attention on the will-to-power of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. The author devoted twelve chapters to the formation of the Roosevelt political views. Then he provided Wilson's contrasting agenda. Cooper estimated the policy of Nationalism, provided by Roosevelt, and the one of New freedom and isolationism, followed by Wilson.

He emphasized that the election in 1912 meant the transition from the Roosevelt to the Wilson political views. Cooper called them the warrior and the priest, revealing the inner world of each person. To assess the contribution of the both Presidents into American History, it is necessary to examine their ideas and reforms. In his book John Milton Cooper gives a deep analysis to Roosevelt foreign policy. He starts his work with describing of political inheritance of Roosevelt.

Theodore Roosevelt became the President of the USA in 1901. He inherited some advantages from his predecessor. The first was a powerful and efficient party organization. It was a good beginning and a great opportunity to improve the connections he had already made. Most of all Roosevelt a talented cabinet.

So, from the beginning of his political life the President had more supporters than opponents. But Roosevelt himself was a great person. The period under his governing became one of the most active and popular. Thats why he won the elections in 1904.

Roosevelt's motto was to live the "strenuous life." He was interested in foreign affairs as well as in internal. The government under his ruling passed several important domestic acts. Among them there were the Pure Food and Drug acts and the Hepburn Act (the act about the regulation of railroads). Under the period of his governing, the construction of the Panama Canal began.

At the beginning of the twenties century America was engaged in many foreign affairs. Roosevelt took it to the Russo-Japanese War; and was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Peace. He became the first American who received the Prize. So, as it was said, Roosevelt led the nation into a more active role in international relations. In 1912 Wilson beat Roosevelt for president. But the man did not remain in the background.

He took an active art in the political life of the country. He could not adopt Wilson policy of neutrality in World War I. He began to criticize the policy, provided by Wilson, especially his foreign policy. When, finally, the United States entered the war in 1917 Roosevelt wished to lead a division of volunteers, though he took a refusal.

He was not satisfied with Wilsons actions. John Milton Cooper in his book: The Warrior and the Priest: Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt quoted his words. Roosevelt said that the real enemy of the nation is inside it, its own leaders; that they led the nation to the wrong way, revealing its weakness and shortsightedness. Having estimated all pros and cons, we can make a conclusion, that Theodore Roosevelt was a great President of the United States and made a great contribution into its history though as to his attitude towards the economy of the country, he wanted to make it more centralized and concentrate the whole economic power in the hands of monopolies.

As Wilson proved it was not the best way for American economy. As they say, the best of presidents seem to serve in the worst of times. It is quite right with Woodrow Wilson. When he became the president he did not inherit such advantages as Roosevelt did. He had to lead the United States through World War I and govern, for the first time, even without a real platform and support. He refused to follow Roosevelt's idea of a strong federal government and of monopoly.

But, in spite of that, he is considered to be one of the best presidents the country has ever had. And the time of his Presidency was very productive. John Milton Cooper said that he did not know better examination of a presidential administration. He pointed that it was the best example of administration. Woodrow Wilson came to the politics from one of the unlikeliest backgrounds. He was a professor of political science and history.

He was quite opposite to Roosevelt. Woodrow Wilson was an intellectual and his speeches were the most literate with poetic phrases. During his speeches, he could easily describe his dream of social righteousness. Wilson outlined the steps his administration would take. Though a lot of critics called him a domestic president, because the major part of is reforms concerned internal affairs. His administration is expected to be one of reforms.

And it was really the one, provided significant reforms in legislation. The new trend in policy was called the "New Freedom. " Together with Louis Brandeis Wilson devised methods on regulating monopoly. Strict rules of competition were established. Wilson proposed to create such kinds of rules which would make it impossible to abuse the power. Those rules provided a more flexible system of controlling big businesses. Wilsons policy was based on the principles of democracy.

His main forth was the youth. He gave them an opportunity to enter the businesses or professions. Most of all, he pointed that the political process had to be free of the influence of monopolies. Wilson was sure that without free enterprises in America there would not be freedom in politics and economy. Wilsons New freedom was an alternative to Theodore Roosevelt's New Nationalism and became the crucial moment in American History.

But as to the foreign policy of the country during that period of time, it was a policy of non-interference and isolationism. The president thought (as Cooper emphasized in his book) that there would not be peace in the country if it was at war. Roosevelt had another point of view. He even called Wilson feeble folk and said that his home was in New Jersey at Shadow Lawn. Though Wilson took the nation to war in April 1917, it was not of benefit to the international relationships of the country. But it caused the depression after World War I finished.

It is right: Wilson was not the Warrior but the Priest. Frankly speaking, it is difficult to weigh all pros and cons of the policy of both Presidents. The Warrior cannot be the Priest. The only measure of their deeds are a good memory of Americans. It is evident that both of them tried to serve their country. They fought for its prosperity and freedom.

As to the book, I think it is the best one because it gives the whole picture of the events, happened many years ago, and makes you think about what kind of policy is better for the country: the policy of democracy and non-interference provided by Wilson, or the policy of direct regulation and new- nationalism by Roosevelt. John Milton Coopers book gives us information which can help us to estimate present-day events.
