The U. S. rise to power from 1904 to 1919 is truly remarkable. Within comparatively short historical time, America was able to significantly increase its political and economical influence on world's affairs. But the foundation, upon which American geopolitical success in the first part of twentieth century is based, has clearly a speculative nature.

Let us explain this thesis at greater length. At the beginning of 20 th century, it was becoming obvious to many people that it is only a matter of time, before European nations would become involved in major military conflict. In 1911 President Taft proclaimed that in the near future the dollar's diplomacy will be replaced by the diplomacy of gunboats. The few years earlier, State Secretary Philander Knox came up with a genial plan of how revitalize American economy. He suggested that the amount of circulation money in America should be artificially kept high, so that people's increased buying power would stimulate the production. But, soon it was being realised that the rapidly growing American economy required the infusions of more and more green paper, like bodybuilder requires the infusions of steroids.

This, of course, led to the factual devaluation of dollar. In 1905 American dollar was ranked 7 th among world's major currencies, in it continued to lose ground. But everything changed overnight, with the beginning of World War One. The conflicting parties soon realised that the war is going to be a continuous, with their economies being unable to to sustain burden of war for a long time. But, on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, there was generous uncle Sam, who kindly offered a financial support to the Antanta's war effort. It was really unimportant for the American geopolitical doctrine of the time, whether Antanta or Germany would win the war.

American politicians were interested in this war to continue on for as long as possible, so that weakened European nations would not be able to oppose to the American expansion, when time comes. The Federal Reserve was able to get rid of excessive mass of dollars, by providing an enormous loans to the fighting European nations. Thus, a dual task was being accomplished U. S.

was able to strengthen its economy and weaken the economies of its geopolitical rivals. On April 2, 1917 America officially enters the war, only so that it can dictate a conditions of peace, at the time of signing of Versalies treaties. These treaties were nothing but a time delayed bomb, in the political sense of this word. Still, U. S. politicians had learned that nothing benefits America more than the major war in Europe.

As a result of participation in war, 117. 000 American lives had still to be sacrificed. This is only so that America could be considered as fighting nation, even though its most important battles U. S. always wins in the realm of economy. As the result of American involvement in World War One, the dollar became the strongest currency in the world. The Federal Reserve gold assets were increased from 13 tonnes in 1914 to 27 tonnes in 1918.

France, England and Russia owed America millions and millions of dollars, which they payed back in gold. But the most important was the fact that, from this time on, America could exercise a dictatorial powers in Europe, which a few years earlier would be thought of as something impossible. In 1919, President Wilson officially declares that America's foreign policy is going to support the idea of building the new world order, where America would play the most prominent role. In another words, it was 1919 when U. S. officially declared its claim to world's dominance, much earlier before Hitler did the same.

There is no doubt that the American foreign policy in years 1904 - 1919 had benefited our country enormously. Nevertheless, it was accomplished at very high price. The most negative effect of this policy is the fact that it caused a strong anti-American sentiment among great many Europeans, which is still present in our days. The American rise to power, in years preceding the end of the World War One, is a classical example of divide and conquer principle, being implemented on the large scale in 20 th century.
