Character development The Karate Kid In The Karate Kid, we see the emotional and motivational development of Daniel, a young guy who wants to be perfect in the martial arts. Mr. Miyagi, his guru in karate, contributes a lot to this process by constantly teaching Daniel and showing him a right path of development. It is evident that both emotional and motivational development will not progress that much if ones self esteem is low, and there is a group of people that Daniel is somewhat scared of at the beginning - Cobra Kai's. At the end of the film, during the tournament scene, we could tell that Mr. Miyagi prepared Daniel physically for what he was up against by teaching him all of the karate techniques.

Ali was Daniels emotional support and she cheered for him throughout the whole tournament the best possible motivation he could receive. After his first win, she yells out, youre the best which I believe give Daniel a greater adrenaline burst. We see Mr. Miyagi, Ali, and Daniel as the opposite end of the spectrum. We associate these people with kindness and respectful people who try to help others out any way that they can.

Group members must agree on the groups goal to be effective. Having a group goal sets up direction and motivation for the group to successfully achieve its purpose. Since everything revolved around what Johnny believed, we see that the Cobra Kai's were not very successful in the end. With the other group, we see that they worked very well together and in the end, the goal was achieved and Daniel won the tournament. In The Karate Kid, a lot of emotional and motivational development was needed to help Daniel solve his problem with the Cobra Kai group. By Daniel, Miyagi, and Ali working together as a group, a standard agenda was created.

Not only this unification helped Daniel to better understand his need sand wants, but also inspired him on his way to perfection. Ali, Miyagi, and Daniel decide that words are not enough to shut Johnny and the Cobra Kai's up, so they feel it is the best decision that Daniel enters the contest and beats the Cobra Kai's at their own game. However, to win the contest, Daniel has to climb up Maslows ladder, since only by achieving self actualization will he be able to win. Physiological needs did not motivate Daniel that much, it is the higher needs that facilitated his development. He satisfied his safety / security needs by learning karate. He was bullied by others often, however when he started his career in martial arts, things changed significantly.

His progress motivated and emotionally uplifted him a lot, since he was able to see that the lessons he takes are not futile. Belonginess and love is something that contributed a lot to Daniels development throughout the movie. He belonged to a certain group, and also there were only three people in this group, it was enough to motivate him even further. His love towards Ali was a great incentive on his way to perfection, since he wanted to impress her by his skills and by winning the tournament. In order to develop emotionally, he needed to raise his esteem significantly, which is exactly what happened as his lessons progressed.

His esteem raised due to the fact that he had a group he belonged to, a woman he loved, and a goal in life that was very important to him. The last step Daniel had to undertake had a lot to do with self actualization. He needed to realize his potential and see that he has achieved something significant in his life. Winning the tournament is probably the culminating point of the movie, after this point Daniel is a self made person; he has satisfied all his needs and developed both emotionally and in terms of motivation. He has his teacher and Ali, he is skilful at karate, he has just won a very important tournament everything is opened before him, and he is in complete harmony with himself and others.
