GLOBAL WARMING Dear grandpa, Do you aware that our grand children and great children may be the victim of global warming during the next century? In 1986, the Swedish chemist state Arrhenius first revealed the theory that carbon emissions from the burning of coal and other fossil fuels could generate a green house effect by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere leading to global warming. Electro magnetic energy emanating from the Sun is absorbed by the Earth, which radiates some of this energy outward as infrared energy. (Heat). Most of this infrared energy escapes into space, but some of it is absorbed by green house gases in the lower atmosphere (the troposphere) and is radiated back to the Earth as heat energy.

The greenhouse effect is a warming of the Earths surface that makes it hospital for life. Without green house effect, the surface of the Earth would be a frigid - 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Carbon dioxide levels in the Earths atmosphere have increased by 31 % since pre industrial times. Emissions of soot particles and sulfate have significant effects also. When carbon dioxide is emitted to earths atmosphere in a large scale, we refer the condition as global warming. Global warming is also caused if the Earths surface temperature is on the increase due to presence of chemicals in the atmosphere.

Global warming is wielding a direct threat to the planets climate and health of the people. These threats have changed the crop seasons and have affected the way organisms endure on the Earth. As you know the gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide which are also recognized as greenhouse gases usually prevail in the Earths atmosphere in certain proportion. If these gases exceed their proportion in atmosphere then they will make it difficult for the radiation of sun to escape from the atmosphere. This will result in increase in temperature of Earths atmosphere. During the last century alone, the average of Earths temperature has mounted up between 0. 8 to 1. 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the last 15 years, the Earth is witnessing the warmest years in record. Global warming may melt the glaciers that are floating in the Artic and Greenland which in turn may result in the sea levels to soar. Do you know that in the last century alone, there was an increase in sea levels around the globe from four to ten inches? Global warming will also cause the sea water to expand. The glaziers at Himalayas are melting at phenomenal rate and this cause unprecedented and havoc flooding in the great plain areas of India.

Increased heat results more evaporation to happen in the hotter climates and results in precipitation in the areas which has not accustomed to massive rainfalls and thus result in sea level rising. Unusual rise in temperature may result in human health problems like heat stroke head exhaustion. Scientist forecast that the global warming will rise between five and nine degrees by middle of the 21 st century followed by a sea level rise of one to four feet. If polar ice caps melt due to this, coastal cities like San Francisco, New York may be immersed by the surging water. Global warming alternatively means wrong weather in wrong place havoc rain in places where there is scanty rainfall earlier and famine and drought where there was heavy rain before and some places may experience extreme colder and in other places extreme warm all due to changes in atmospheric and ocean circulation. Global warming has started to change the relationships among species in some ecosystems by weakening links in the food chain between for instance, birds and the caterpillars they eat.

Researchers find that changing climate at the end of the last ice age tore apart existing ecosystem and formed new ones, leaving no heaven for species that no longer fit in. It has compelled more than 80 % of birds, amphibians, plants and other organisms to change their timing of reproduction or migration, length of growing season, population size, or population distribution. Rising global temperature is debasing the links of food chains and the fitness of some creatures to force them to leave or abandon their habitats. Global warming also compelling the birds to advance or delay their hatching and due to this, the availability of food for their chicks become scarce as by that time the caterpillar season is on the wane. Moth relies on oak leaves as their food and moths caterpillar hatching is always happenings when the oaks leaves open.

If Moth hatches five days earlier or two weeks later, caterpillar has to starve because of non availability of edible oak leaves. One of the research proves that oak burst occur about 10 days earlier than it did 20 years ago. As per Christian Both of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the pied flycatcher which migrates 5000 kilometers from tropical West Africa to TP De Hoge Value, in Norway seems to be affected from mismatch between nesting and wintering site conditions due to global warming. Montana State University ecologist William Fraser finds that global warming is causing the extinction of Adelie penguins living on the western coast of the Antarctica Peninsula and over the past 30 years, there is a startling 70 % decline in the number of Adelie penguins nesting on a number of islands in the vicinity of U. S research bases in Antarctica In the last 50 years, winter temperature in Antarctica peninsula have increased by six degrees Celsius and it has resulted in an increased snowfall which obstructs penguin to hatch and breed their chicks. It is to be noted that all the carbon dioxide (CO 2) we exhales arrives from the breakdown of molecules such as carbohydrates and fats in the effort to produce energy.

These emitted CO 2 by humans have to be absorbed by plants and animals in turn eat these plants as their food. If there is indigestion by animals or decrease in size of plants or animals globally, may result in higher CO 2 in atmosphere resulting in global warming. Solution to the problem lies on restricting emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. If we could just control all the coal and fossil fuels that we burn, the prevalence of green house gases will be restricted and it would keep all of that from happening quickly. Unless we control the greenhouse gas emission, we can not control the global warming for centuries and in particular, Carbon dioxide, which have long atmospheric lifetimes. The implications of these findings for society and public policy are great.
