Health care systems: Public vs. Private The main task of this paper is to provide information about public and private health care systems. Having the whole spectrum of both systems will help to make main distinctions between the two of them. As contrast I will use some facts about Danish health care system. The US healthcare system is one of the most technologically developed in the world and expensive too.

Our doctors are the most qualified specialists in medical spheres and the rate of medical insurance is really advanced. In spite these achievements the health care in US is facing crisis and it will only worth if nothing going to change. The main disadvantages of current system are the following: the lack of trained caregivers, lack of affordability of prescription medication, drug re-importation and lack of health insurance. And of course prices. Only people of moderate and high means can afford a well-qualified health insurance. For those who are bellow this degree health care is limited with the free public clinics.

And that is where the stumbling block lays. Is it possible that changing the current healthcare system into a free system will solve the health care problem? And if it is, then who would pay for the health care since it would be free? What is public health care? Public health care is designed to make sure that all people in the country have reasonable access to insured health services on a prepaid basis, without direct charges at the point of service. (Public vs. private health care: FAQs) In Canada the public health care is developed very good and earnestly proves it necessity.

Simply put, if you break your leg chasing the Canadian dream, you have the right to get fixed up without opening your wallet except to pull out your provincial health insurance card. The act is also designed to make sure that the delivery of health care is pretty consistent across the country. Ottawa has found that the best way to do that is by attaching conditions to the cash it transfers to the provinces to cover health care. Among those conditions are that health care must be: portable, universal, accessible, free from extra charges (for insured services) (Public vs.

private health care: FAQs) And what is the private health care is? Any kind of health care if you pay for it. If you want separate ward in hospital you pay for it, if you want huge TV set in this ward and fresh flowers on your night table you can easily get all of this just remember that all charges are from your pocket. Private and public health care can be integrated and modified and very successfully by the way. So what is the difference between these two health care systems?

The main difference is that one of them you can get for free and other not. But it is not the point and the point is what kind of health care system is better. Dr. Arnold Relman, professor emeritus of medicine and social medicine at Harvard Medical School and emeritus editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, appeared before the Senate committee studying health care in February 2002. He warned against relying on the market or greater consumer choice to control health-care costs and improve quality. While there is much to be said for making more information available to people about their health care, Relman said, it is a fundamental misconception to imagine that sick patients can or should behave like ordinary consumers in commercial transactions, selecting the services and prices they want.

Health care is totally different from most goods and services, and that's why we have medical insurance and why sick people need the professional and altruistic services of physicians and other providers. Schumacher argues further privatization will not spell the end of medicare as we know it. People worry that if doctors can go private, then theyre going to quit the public system. I would argue the opposite. If a doctor can take part of their practice private, theyre less likely to leave because theyre not tied solely to the governments fee schedule. (Public vs. private health care: FAQs) There are prejudices, which work both against private and public health care.

People think that medicare in public health services is not decent. For some point they are right because even with additional financing public health care yields to private systems in technical equipping and drug re-importation. As for the private health care people often think: They can prescribe some useless and very expansive course of treatment. The do not care about people they just want to get our money, etc. It is hard to bale them for such prejudices because they are right at some point. So what to do?

Both public and private health care has their advantages and disadvantages. What to choose? As for me, I prefer the Danish health care system. The Danish health care system is predominantly financed through local taxation with integrated funding and provision of health care at the local (county) level. Most primary care is provided by privately practicing GPs, who are paid and combined capitations and fee-for-service basis, but the number of GPs is controlled by the counties and GPs fees and working conditions are negotiated centrally. Hospital care is mainly provided by hospitals owned and run by the counties.

Private hospital are limited accounting for less than one per cent of hospital beds. (Health Care Systems in Eight Countries) There is no existing list of benefits of such system but all of them have positive influence on the state of health care in Denmark. Counties and municipalities are responsible for the most health care insurance. Drugs are divided on the levels of co-payment the more they cost the less patient pays. This rule us also applied to dental care and spectacles. You can even get a plastic surgery for free if doctor decides that it is necessary on psychological ground. Infertility treatment is also strictly regulated.

I think that such health care system is very efficient and may be applied to our society. Bibliography: Public vs. private health care: FAQs, CBC News Online, November 9, 2005. web Health Care in Eight Countries: Trends and Challenges, European Observatory of Health care systems, 2002. web
