... the theater. Baron who was not occupied in the play came to see Moliere when he was changing his clothes. You felt bad on the stage?

asked Baron. How did the audience receive the play? answered Moliere. Very well.

But you look ill, master. I look great but somehow I felt cold for a moment said Moliere. And he started chattering with his teeth. Baron looked intently at Moliere and then turned pale and fussed. He opened the door of the actors dressing room and cried: Hey, is anybody there?

Tell them to prepare my sedan-chair! He put off his muff and told Moliere to put his hands in it. Somehow Moliere calmed down, silently did what he had been asked to and chattered with his teeth again. In a moment, Moliere was wrapped in warm clothes, put into sedan-chair and brought home. It was still dark at home because Armanda had just returned from the performance.

She played Angelique there. Baron whispered to Armanda that Moliere did not feel well and people started running around the house with candles. Moliere was brought upstairs. Armanda gave some orders downstairs and sent one of the servants to look for a doctor.

In the meantime, Baron and one of the house maids undressed Moliere and put him into his bed. With every minute, Baron was getting more and more worried: Master, dont you want anything? Maybe some broth? Moliere grinned and said smiling contentedly: The broth?

Oh no! I know what broth my spouse cooks. Its stronger than the acid for me. Shall I pour your medicine?

Moliere replied: No, no. Im afraid of the stuff you have to drink. Just make me sleep. Baron turned to the maidservant and whispered: Quickly bring the pillow with hop! The maidservant returned in a moment with a pillow stuffed with the hop and it was put under Moliere's head. He started coughing suddenly and there was blood on the handkerchief.

Baron looked at him closely putting the candle near his face and noticed that Moliere's nose became pointed, there were shadows under his eyes and his forehead was in sweat. Wait here cried Baron to the maidservant and ran down where he met one of the actors, friend of Moliere. Sir, he is in a very bad condition. Run and bring the priest! The actor ran out of the house as a madman. Armanda appeared near the stairway with the candle in her hand.

Madam Moliere, send somebody else for a priest and quickly! Armanda dropped the candle and disappeared in the darkness. Baron whispered with surprise: Why none of the doctors hasnt come yet? and ran upstairs. What do you want, master? - asked Baron and wiped the sweat from Moliere's forehead. Light!

And the parmesan cheese- replied Moliere. Bring cheese! said Baron to the maidservant and she ran out of the room putting the candle down. Tell my wife to come to me said Moliere.

Baron ran downstairs and cried: Hey! Is there anybody? Bring more light! Madam Moliere!

Downstairs the new candles were lighting up in somebody's shaking hands. In the meantime, upstairs Moliere shook and the blood was streaming out of his throat on the linen. The first moment Moliere was afraid but then he felt better, and then his bedroom suddenly turned into the forest with light from all sides. In the meantime, Baron was going upstairs with two lanterns and behind him was running Armanda. She was pulling a little girl by the sleeves saying: Dont be afraid, honey. Lets go and see daddy.

They came into the room and saw that the entire bed was in Moliere's blood. The little girl cried. Moliere! called Armanda but there was no reply. Baron threw the lantern onto the table and running downstairs he shook the servant ho was supposed to bring the doctor: You! Where did you go?

Why didnt you bring the doctor? And the servant replied desperately: Sir Baron! What can I do? None of the doctors wants to see Moliere. None of them! The entire house was perplexed.

The matter was that they were not allowed to burry Moliere properly. Moliere's friends had begged the priests from the neighborhood to come to the bed of the dying man in vain. Two of them refused. The third priest to whom they addressed had some pity for them but he came too late when Moliere had already died. He hurried to go away at once. It was not possible to burry Moliere according to the Church rules.

The sinful comedian had died without penance and he did not disavow his profession condemned by the clergy, not giving a written promise that if the Lord had given him back his health, he would never have played in the theater. That document was not signed and no priest in Paris would take responsibility to see monsieur Moliere off to the cemetery. However, no cemetery would accept him. Armanda started to loose hope when some priest came who was Moliere's friend.

The cure not only taught Armanda how to compose a formal request for the name of Paris archbishop but also went to him with Armanda, risking his own reputation. The widow and the cure were ushered after some minutes of waiting to the cabinet of the archbishop. Armanda saw Areas de Shavallon, the archbishop of Paris. She addressed him: I came here, your Eminence, to beg your permission to burry my husband according to the Church rules. De Shavallon read through the petition and told the widow not looking at her: Madam, was your husband a comedian? Yes replied Armanda with excitement.

But he died as a good Christian. Unfortunately, that cannot be helped. I cant give you the permission. Where then do I have to take his body? - said Armanda and started to cry. I have a pity for him, madam. But, please, understand, I must obey the law.

And the cure led the sobbing Armanda out. That means Ill have to take his body out of city and dig it in the ditch cried Armanda. But the cure did not leave her. He took her to the kings palace.

And here Armanda had some luck. The king wanted to see her. Armanda was ushered into the hall, where the king was waiting for her, standing at the table. Armanda decided not to talk and fell on her knees crying. The king helped her to upright and said: I ask you to calm down, madam.

What can I do for you? Your Highness, Im not allowed to burry my husband de Moliere properly. Protect me, your Highness! said Armanda.

The king replied: Everything will be done for your husbands funerals. I ask you to go home and to take care of his body. Armanda left crying and thanking the king. And in some minutes the kings messenger galloped to the archbishop. When Shavallon came to the king he asked him: What is happening there about Molieres death? Your Highness, - said Shavallon the law forbids to burry him in the sacred soil.

And how deep does the sacred soil extend? asked the king. Four feet, your Highness, replied the archbishop. Then burry Moliere in the fifth foot, - said Luis XIV, - But do burry him for sure, avoiding both the triumph and the scandal.

The chancellery of the archbishop issued such a document that survived until the present day: Taking into consideration, the circumstances found by our investigation, which was conducted according to our command, we allow the priest of the Church of Saint Eustachian to burry the body of the late Moliere according to the Church rules, but on the condition that the burying will be done quietly, without any solemnity, by not more than two priests, and not in the daytime, and that there is no requiem mass for him not in the Church of saint Eustachian, not in any other church. As soon as the rumor about the death of the comedian Moliere, the son of respected Jean-Baptist, who had the inherited title of kings upholster, reached the guild of Parisian upholsters, they brought their guild colors and put it above Moliere's body. At the same time, one shifty man who new that Great Conde liked Moliere, decided to earn some money and wrote an epitaph to Moliere. Conde took the epitaph, looked at the author and said: Thank you. But Id prefer that he wrote your epitaph. Such was the end of this long day.

Moliere, the talented dramatist and comedian died almost at the stage while acting. And such was the verdict of the clergy which paid back its debt for Tartuffe and other mockeries on the saint subjects. They could never forgive him his laughter and they were happy that he died and stopped writing his comedies. But many people regretted his death.

They came to see him off in his last journey. The funerals were on the 21 st of February, 1673, on Tuesday night. Moliere was buried on the Cemetery of Saint Joseph under the cover of darkness. Bibliography Charles Augustine Sainte-Beuve.
