Kidnapped If I would have experienced to appear in some unknown location, first thing I would pay attention to in order to discover in what country I am would be life expectancy. As it is known the lowest life expectancy is in low-income countries. I guess it is easy to figure out what is the average age of citizens. If there are too many young people in the country and too few old, then life expectancy surely is low. Also, I would be able to discover how well the social sector in the country is developed. If people live in very poor conditions, if they lack water and if electricity in not a standard option in every house (if there are any well-built modern houses) then it is evident that I am in low-income country.
Also what I may discover after spending some time in the country; talking to and observing people would be their level of education and literacy rate. You may argue that is quite difficult to find what out is literacy rate in percents, I guess it would be just enough to be sure that the country is lower middle-income or low-income country, if some people cannot read or write, since in high-income and upper-middle income countries literacy rate is more than 95 per pent. After that I will compare all criteria mentioned in the first paragraph to distinguish if the country is low-income or lower middle-income one. In my opinion the best determinant to find out to what category a country belongs to is to see what cars people are driving and how much traffic there is. This may sound a little absurd, but I know almost all car models in the world and I know their comparative value.
If I notice that people are driving cheap cars and the majority of traffic consists of outdated models, than I am definitely in not upper middle-income or high-income country. Now I have left to discover whether the country I am in belongs to high-income category or to upper middle-income category. This appears to be not an easy task, but what I have in mind is to see whether there is a huge gap of living standards within the country. If I will discover some poor neighborhoods and some extra rich ones, I will be sure that I am in upper middle-income country. In high-income countries there are no poor neighborhoods. Every persons life is secure in financial terms.
Poorest people in the country still are able to purchase any necessity goods and are completely socially secured. Bibliography: Today, Michael & Stephen Smith. 199. Economic Development 8 th Ed. NY: Addison-Wesley
