Throughout many great works of literature there are numerous characters whose acts are either moral or immoral. In the work Killing by Andre Dubus and in Shakespeare's Othello the main characters carry out actions which in today's day and age would be immoral and inexcusable. The central idea of both stories is revenge. In each story the characters hurt someone in order to either retain their pride or to lessen his pain of loss. Revenge is a main and constant theme throughout the play Othello.

It is portrayed through the character Iago. He is the only one who causes any conflict in Othello. If he never had entered the play Othello would have married Desdemona and they would have lived happily ever after. Right from the beginning of the play to the very end Iago causes conflicts. He is directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of: Othello Desdemona, Emilia, Cassio, and Rodrigo. Which happen to be all of the main characters.

I believe Shakespeare didn't just want Iago's character to be evil. I think he wanted him more to symbolize it. All of the problems he causes are through lies, treachery, manipulation, and a deep unknown hate. Some of his hate is fueled by jealousy and revenge.

In the very beginning of act 1 Iago displays his hatred for Othello. He is angry at him for making Cassio the lieutenant. Jealousy is his first motif. Iago feels hurt and betrayed, and realizes there is no remedy except for revenge. He... hates the Moor...

and comes to the conclusion that... nothing can or shall content his soul till he is evened with Othello... In the middle of the night, Iago calls outside Brabantios house to inform him that his daughter, Desdemona has run away and eloped with Othello. Coming from two different backgrounds, Desdemona's father takes offense to their interracial marriage. This demeans Othello and causes him to prove to Brabantio that he did not use any witchcraft or black magic to win Desdemona's heart. When Desdemona professes her true love for Othello, her father disowns her.

Iago's first attempt to destroy Othello is successful, yet he still craves revenge. He devises a plan to destroy Othello. He wants to make Othello believe that Cassio is having an affair with his wife Desdemona. This will cause Othello to regret appointing Cassio as his lieutenant and simultaneously destroy Othello's life. He knows that he must bring this monstrous birth to the worlds light if he wants to avenge Othello's betrayal.

Iago is successful in convincing Othello that his wife is unfaithful. Outraged, Othello murders Desdemona. Immediately after, Emilia, Iago's wife and Desdemona's mistress, explains to Othello that her husband has been lying to him and Desdemona had been faithful. Iago then murders Emilia.

Iago succeeds in destroying Othello's life as well as his own. There is a great deal irony in this play. There is also a great contrast between the character. All the victims are innocent. The cause of all their deaths was by the evil and the desire for revenge that drove Iago to do many irrational things and destroyed his friendship with Othello, the love Desdemona and Othello shared, and the trust between Cassio and Othello.

The need for revenge is part of human nature, but if it is blown out of proportion, it can have devastating effects. Andre Dubus Killings is also the story that has a love plot as well as the revenge through the murder. Richard Street murders Frank Fowler because of his relationship with his estranged wife Mary Ann. Frank Fowler's father Matt and Willis Trotter (Matts friend) fell as though law enforcement arent doing their job. For the love of his son Matt and Willis they want to take the revenge themselves and take matters into their own hands. No parent (s) should ever have to bury any of their children.

These were the thought in Matt Fowler head during the funeral and burial of his youngest son, Frank. He wanted a revenge for his sons death, the revenge that would also take a life of a person. In the days following the funeral his sons killer was walking freely throughout town on bond. This was an injustice and a slap in the face for Franks parents and everyone else who loved him. Matt gets irritated with this upsetting fact and decided that something must be done about it in the way that he wouldnt be caught. Matt blames himself internally about Franks death.

He remembers Frank and how much in love with Mary Ann he was. He remembers how he felt in the days when he and Ruth were first in love. Frank indeed loved Mary Anns two boys as his own. He would stay over many nights with Mary Ann.

But was not left unseen and became too obvious for Richard when he picked up his boys for visitation. Richard became irritated and jealous of this fact because he wanted to work out their relationship that Mary Ann didnt. Nothing stopped him from becoming a criminal and killing an innocent person. Richard killed Frank in front of his sons.

This was clearly a premeditated murder of Frank. In remembering his sons short life, Matts love compels him to do something. He wants a revenge and with the help of Willis formulates a plan of how to get rid of Richard without anyone knowing or witnessing the kidnap and killing. As Richard drove to his rendezvous with death he was still not remorseful about killing Frank and explained that he would do about 20 years for the murder. That would not satisfy Matt and as Richard began to run he shot and killed him.

Killings is clearly a story of a fathers love for his murdered son and a story of revenge. It also shows how impatience and unforgiving victims and their families can be in order to solve their own problems. Concluding my essays I want to say that although many of the trivial standards of the present world are different than that of when the authors were writing, there are many substantial similarities. As for me I still believe that revenge is a the last thing that people should do.

People should be able to forgive others mistakes and wrongdoing in their heart even if it hurts too much. Indeed, none of us is insured from making a mistake or hurt to someone. And it is only Gods right to forgive or punish people for their actions. References Bowling, Alex. "Eye for an Eye. " Killings. April 2002.
