Finishing reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, many details about the evils of slavery that I never knew existed appeared to me more vividly. Now I understand whether or not it is moral to own a human being. My opinion after reading this is that it is absolutely wrong to own a man and take his freedom. Douglas described what it feels to be in slaves shoes.

Douglas explained in his narrative that he was withheld from many details of his life. Throughout his entire writing, the author couldnt tell exactly how old he was, because of never knowing the date of his birthday. He also barely knew his own family. He had only seen his mother maybe four or five times in his life, and every time that he had was only for a short period of time.

He didnt even know who his father was. Douglas new that he was a white man and heard the rumor that it was his mothers master. Fredericks knowledge about either family or grammar was always trying to be limited. He was never allowed to read, because he was a slave. This was because owners feared that if slaves learned to read and write, they would develop a unique sense of self and start to revolt. Slave holders felt that the less their property knew, the less trouble.

Douglas wrote about the negative of taking somebody's personal privileges and treat a person like an animal. this. Most of the time he was hungry as most of the slaves. Often he had to eat mush with the other kids.

And usually they had a fight who gets to eat more. But what hurt him most when he was a child was the cols. Having only a white shirt that came down to his knees to wear the boy suffered from cold, having to sleep with no blankets, or a bed for that matter. Sometimes Frederick took a field sack to sleep in at night, but he was still cold. When he moved to Baltimore, it was the first time he owned a pair of trousers. Douglas also spoke of beatings, whether it was first hand, or whether he saw them.

Sometimes it was a great pleasure for a master to whip a slave, or beat a slave with a hickory stick. He saw people beat so bad, the blood ran for a half hour at a time, leaving large welts and scars. One of his masters, Master Andrew stomped on Fredericks little brother until blood came from his eyes and ears. Douglas told that slaves were even killed sometimes and masters were not punished for it. One time a friend of Douglas was getting whipped and then decided to jump into a creek so he wouldnt get hit anymore. Mr.

Gore gave him the count of three to get out. He didnt, so Mr. Gore raised his gun and shot the poor man in the head. The slave who was shot didnt even belong to Mr. Gore. He was just watching him.

The situation is still that severe. Other than the beatings, and the lack of rights, slaves still had to put up with mind games that proved to slaves that they could never really make it if they ran away to freedom. One thing is that slaves couldnt trust anyone. They were spied by others who told the master what they think or were going to do. Douglas mistress started to teach him how to read and spell. But after his master discovered this, he was no longer allowed this.

Just as soon as he started making progress, he was forced to be stopped, even though he secretly continued to teach himself. Sometimes if a slave did well enough, he would get paid for his work, but he was still a slave, paid or not. Even when a slave became free, he or she would still be jailed, like Fredericks grandmother. She served her whole life and when she got old she was moved to a small hut in the woods to basically wait for her death, as she couldnt support herself alone. Sometimes slaves tried to escape.

It is said that when a slave escapes, he better make it because the punishment is far worse than most people can imagine. One time Douglass plan was foiled because a fellow slave ratted him out. Most people after escaping would name the slave who caused his punishment for planning to escape. Frederick did not do that.

Douglas was always a strong man who would not be broken by anyone. He was once sent to a man named Mr. Covey. Mr. Covey was a slave breaker and he was going to try to break Frederick. After Douglas lasted there for about nine months, he started to get very tired and also sick.

One day Frederick diced to find his master and left Covey. On the way to his master Frederick felt very weak and Covey, having found him tried to make Douglas to come back. But Frederick continued to walk and finally came to his Masters place. He was let to spend a night there and went back to Covey next day. When Douglas got back, Covey ran at him with a cow skin, so Douglas decided to run to his friend, Sandy Jenkins. They decided to go to the woods.

When Douglas returned, he wasnt beaten. The next day, Covey commanded him to go and do some chores at the barn. So he did so. Meanwhile, Covey came in the barn with a rope to tie up Douglas and give him a beating. Douglas fought him, kicking and choking him with all his might. Covey called for Hughes to come and help him out.

Douglas kicked him in the ribs and continued to fight until Covey gave up and let him go. Covey didnt whip him anymore after that. This fueled Fredericks mind to free himself. This was the biggest turning point in his life. This book was written when slavery was a big issue and slaves suffered the miserable life. They all wanted to get freedom.

This period is very significant in the history because it turned the life of slaves and all other people. Douglas tired to show the true life of the slaves on his own experience and all the sufferings that they had to feel. Frederick wanted other people to know and feel the life of that time. Douglas started out poor and incapable of refusing oppression, then, at 17 they gained courage to break out and found his successful life.

He thought that matured readers in general are harder to persuade compared to younger readers age of 16 - 18. This is why Douglas intentionally set his "rebellion stage" at the age of 17 in order to encourage the "less stable" teenage readers to dare do something different and to not compromise with normality. This less-staleness would enable these teenage readers to be more receptive to radical ideas. Bibliography: 1. Douglas, Frederick.
