The Two Sides to Artificial Insemination In this paper I will try to explain what the artificial insemination is and also will try to show two sides of the artificial insemination. Before Ill start to explain pros and cons of the artificial insemination I want to give definition to it. Im deeply convinced that it will help to build my thesis. So according to the Wikipedia Artificial insemination (AI) is when sperm is placed into a female's ovarian follicle (intra follicular), uterus (intrauterine), cervix (intra cervical), or fallopian times (intramural) using artificial means rather than by natural copulation. Modern techniques for artificial insemination were first developed for the dairy cattle industry to allow many cows to be impregnated with the sperm of a bull with traits for improved milk production. (Artificial Insemination) It was news for me that artificial insemination was (and still is) used for animals.

But than I find a proper explanation: it is all about breeding problems. Artificial insemination helps to obtain desirable characteristics of one male to many females. As for the humans the whole case is far more complicated. Usually artificial insemination is used as part of infertility treatment. Infertility is the inability to naturally conceive a child or the inability to carry a pregnancy to term. There are many reasons why a couple may not be able to conceive, or may not be able to conceive without medical assistance. (Artificial Insemination).

There is another reason for artificial insemination many lesbians bore babies this way. The sperm which is used is either the woman's partner's sperm (artificial insemination by husband, AIH) or donor sperm (AID, artificial insemination by donor). Lesbians usually asked their friends for a little help or use donor sperm. Of course now exist a great risk of AIDS so donor sperm must be thoroughly checked. So what about the process of artificial insemination? Is it some kind of medical magic or just a gift from technical progress.

I think both but the process itself is not completed (or so it seems to me when I read about it). According to Wikipedia In its simplest form, the woman's menstrual cycle is closely observed and, just when an ovum is released, semen from a donor is placed in her upper vagina. If the procedure is successful, she conceives and bears to term a baby as normal, making her both the genetic and gestational mother. AI is essentially low-tech (Artificial Insemination) Of course there are some important details such as various graduation of treatment. And sometimes semen can be injected directly into a woman's uterus to improve the chance of conception in a process called intrauterine insemination. (Artificial Insemination) I always thought that artificial insemination is somewhat new kind of medical treatment. But this practice has a long history which begins in Medieval Ages.

New improved methods of sperm freezing became the main driving force for artificial insemination. And now the main task of the clinics is to check the donors' health, to freeze, store, and defrost the sperm and to draw up legal contracts. But nothing I perfect and the issue of artificial insemination has become very significant in the recent years. According to Wikipedia Legal issues have arisen in cases where the gestational (and possibly genetic) mother decides to keep the child.

Likewise, there have been debates over the rights of sperm donors. There have also been debates as to whether conceiving a baby without sexual intercourse is ethical (Artificial Insemination) Lets talk about ethical problems in medically assisted procreation. Medically assisted procreation (MAP) is an important issue today. Ethic usually takes interest in the three objects common to MAP, the oocyte, the embryo and the child. There are many talks about oocyte "Magical" power is attributed to the oocyte as a source of life that is rare and exhaustible.

The female gamete, haploid cell becomes the "potential child", indistinct from the mother's womb from which it has been torn. (Ethical problems in medically assisted procreation) Marc Germond states that all such talks have no scientific evidence and just cause damage to the artificial insemination clinics. Such medical practice enables infertile couples to conceive their own child. Infertile couples suffer greatly from their inability to bear child. For such couples the MAP specialist is not just doctor but counseling partner who answer their questions and assuage their fears. Marc Germond states In its primary reflection, ethics may moderate the responsibilities of the legislator, by taking care that the law does not obscure the biomedical and socioeconomic contexts of MAP, thereby also including other related and complement aspects dealing with the same subject, such as pregnancy termination, adoption and contraception Accept ethic aspect also there is a religious aspect.

In other words is artificial insemination playing god? Cloning is also asked in this way but I can agree that human cloning is very intricate question. Especially from the position of church. But I see no field for such discussion in the artificial insemination practice. Still many people have other point of view. Chris Kahlenborn M.

states, One additional procedure called artificial insemination needs to be mentioned. Here a woman chooses to be artificially inseminated (i. e. , the sperm is placed into a woman's uterus) by the sperm of a man who is often not her husband. The woman can actually choose the characteristics of the genetic make-up of the man who donated the sperm (i. e.

his IQ, his nationality, etc). In addition, since single women often choose this procedure -- the unfortunate child often grows up fatherless. Artificial insemination is different than artificial fertilization since only one gamete (i. e. , only the sperm) is manipulated in the procedure and the probability for early abortion is theoretically no greater than with a natural conception. Obviously, these procedures are ripe with moral evils. (Artificial fertilization and the Christian Response) The author of this article compare freezing of the eggs and sperm to a great evil. He also states that freezing of embryos is same as killing children because only two-thirds of children survive the freezing process.

But that is not all. We all understand that donor sperm can be received only through masturbation. Chris Kahlenborn states: Masturbation: Although this act does not seem to register on the moral Richter scale of many Christians, other Christians consider it an "act that is inherently evil" and can therefore never be justified. Almost every sperm sample is collected via masturbation. The Christian who accepts the truth of the immorality of this act cannot engage in masturbation under any conditions (Artificial fertilization and the Christian Response) He also underlined that women who wants to conceive in such way need to take drugs (they help to quicken the eggs ripening) In other words artificial insemination is a great evil and Lord doesnt welcome the whole process.

But I think that such statements are incorrect and there is no need to take them seriously or even debate with such people. God commanded us to be fruitful and multiply and I think that it is unimportant in which way exactly we fulfill his commands. Artificial insemination is no playing god but a perfect opportunity for un fertile couples, lesbians and single women to bear a child. Medical treatment in this field is rather expensive but no money can be compared with sheer happiness of motherhood. Women are free to choose where, when and how many children they want to bear and I think that there is no crime in such choice. All those who speak against artificial insemination are limited and narrow-minded and dont want to watch in future.
