Should General Education be Promoted? There is no doubt that the general education needs to be promoted among young people, by every applicable mean. Yet, people usually have a hard time coming up the specific reasons about why should it be done. As a rule, the promoters of education simply suggest that it would be easier for the individual to fully realise its potential in life, while having been introduced to the the most fundamental concepts of knowledge. This, of course is true, nevertheless, the social aspects of the importance of promotion of education are usually overlooked. In this essays I will try to fill the gap, by addressing the issue from the social prospective.
The history shows us that the decline of every major civilization begins when percentage of people, capable of understanding the abstract concepts, becoming less than the half, in every particular society. The America is not the exception, in this respect. And just like before, the lowering of educational level among young Americans, can be explained by the fact of our society becoming increasingly multicultural. 60 % of Microsoft program software designers consist of people from former Soviet Union. Majority of teenagers dream of becoming economists or lawyers, even though that, as recently as 20 years ago, the profession of an engineer, for example, was just as much respected. And this all happening, while left-wing hawks try to lower even more educational standards, so that more students would be able to fit in. All these ominous trends point out to the fact that the promotion of general education in America had failed, in its current form.
But this doesn't mean that the whole idea sustained the fiasco. It is rather the promotional methods that need to be addressed. Nevertheless, this subject is too vague to be analyzed here. Let us simply concentrate on the social motivation for the promotion of general education. 1). Young people do not have the ability to rationalise their choice of profession, if any. But when they become introduced to the basic liberal knowledge, it will be much easier for them to associate themselves with either of its branches.
Thus, they could concentrate their attention on achieving the educational success in the field, where it most likely to happen. For example, someone with inclination to music would be much better off trying to excel in it, than anywhere else. But the most important the society is going to be able to maintain the sufficient number of intellectuals this way, thus enabling the continuous social progress. 2). In the eyes of teenagers, gaining education appears to be less attractive, than making some easy money on the streets, selling drugs. This statement is especially applicable to the young people with diverse ethnic background. That's why we now have the posters of famous rappers in the libraries, encouraging teenagers to read books.
Still, I doubt very much the effectiveness of it, because it is doesn't matter how hard teachers try to educate the kid, if he simply does not have the genetic predetermination to studying. The new method needs to be found to make education more attractive than crime, it would be better if it only appeals to few, than being totally ineffective altogether. 3). Many young people simply do not have the means to become educated, because they happened to be born in the poor families. Yet, they have the potential. The society needs to be able to find such people and provide them with the free scholarship.
We have the money to throw on the air, all over the world, in the form of humanitarian aid, maybe it is a time we begin to pay a little bit more attention to our own problems. It is only trough the specifically designed programs of educational promotion, our human resources can find its full potential. The way for any society to remain competitive in this world is to contribute into the future more then it does in present. To conclude this, we need to say that the promotion of education is very important, yet it needs to be rightly directed, otherwise it risks to remain ineffective, just as in its current form in America.
