Drama Essay Although miracles rarely happen nowadays, sometimes they do I was able to visit the Blackfriars theatre and see a Shakespeare's play in the 1600 s. The play I had the opportunity to see was Antony and Cleopatra, and now I have a lot of emotions to share with you not only about a play itself, but also about the actors, audience and the overall atmosphere that prevailed in the theatre. I knew that Shakespeare was a genius; however I actually underestimated him the audience, which would have looked terrible and disappointing to any contemporary drama critic, was fully satisfied with the performance and showed much appreciation. The Blackfriars theatre was nothing like our contemporary theatres.

It was crowded, people were sitting and standing all over the place, and it was not as quiet as in our theatres some people were talking together with the actors, and sometimes it was hard to listen to the conversation on the stage. The actors themselves also had little similarity to our contemporary actors. The costumes did not look that convincing, and it seemed like some of the actors that played minor roles were a bit drunk (or maybe they just forgot a part of their monologues). The audience was really diverse; there were Nobles as well as ordinary people with their children, some foreigners also were present, probably they have heard already about Shakespeare and wanted to see with their own eyes some of his famous plays. People were talking and laughing, they did not really comprehend the historical aspects of the play, however they really liked the action, and the actors play was one of the most important criteria for them. The play itself was just great, I have never seen it before, and seeing the original version was quite a surprise.

Antony, the hero of the tragedy, is seen as a man caught between two worlds- the fantasy microcosm of Alexandria, and the titanic responsibilities and honors of the triumvirate, whilst his lover Cleopatra is the ruler of Egypt. Between them, they have political authority over half the known world, so theirs is a relationship embroiled in political significance. Antony and Cleopatra's tragedy explores almost a crown on death, a total, unprecedented political collapse. The two extremes, love and death, seem to unite in speech of the actors, although some of the words were really not familiar to me. The part I liked most of all is near the end of the play, when Antony and Caesar communicate with each other. Once Antony and Caesar arrive on stage the mood remains much the same.

Both are polite and formal, addressing the other as sir and approaching the issue indirectly- when Antony asks what it matters to Caesar if he was in Egypt, Octavius replies n a typically over polite and diplomatic way no more than my residing here at Rome might be to you in Egypt. The whole process feels unnatural and tense, especially with Lepidus attempting to mediate and reconcile the pair. Again, this atmosphere is obviously a device intended by the author, as a direct result of the language used. This is, in my opinion, symbolic of everything Caesar is in the play. He is calculating, manipulative and dispassionate where Antony is willful and generous. After the play was over, I did not move for some time to see what other people would be doing.

Some of them started to get out real fast, while others cheered up the actors and some Nobles actually invited them to perform at their places. I left the theatre happy and satisfied miracles do occur and I have just been in one of those miracles. Words Count: 610.
