Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to eat a healthy diet I. Introduction 1. Attention Getter: When you think of someone happy, successful, beautiful which image comes to your mind? An image of someone tired, overweight, sweaty, who is sitting in front of TV with a bowl of potato chips and a large glass of cola? Probably not. Most of us visualize a healthy person as someone who is active, spends much time outside, does sports, is slim, energetic and who eats healthy foods.

People want to be healthy, but most of us have excuses to skip our workouts or get a fast-burger at the nearest drive-through. The price we should be prepared to pay for this is excessive weight, health problems and, as a result, shorter and less happy life. Do we really need all this? I am sure we do not! ! ! II. Main Part 1.

Problem: All over the world, and the United States particularly, people do not pay enough attention to what and how they eat. According to the Harvard College Healthy Eating Pyramid (web), exercise and healthy diet are two factors responsible for human health and long-living. A. According to Sarah Aitkens research (web), red meat, refined grains, fried potatoes, sugary drinks, chips and other salty snacks are part of the American Culture. B. According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (web), 25 % of Americans do not eat any vegetables at all, only a third of Americans eat two or more pieces of fruit per day.

a. Fresh organic foods cost more than their not-so-healthy substitutes. Fruits and vegetables cost much, but their quality is not always satisfactory. Moreover, if you buy fruits / vegetables in a supermarket you cannot try them and it is always a 50 - 50 chance they are sweet, fresh, etc. In contrast, potato chips or similar packaged products are always 100 % exactly the same, so if you like some particular kind, you can get it and be sure you are getting something you will enjoy. b.

Fresh organic foods are not always available at round-the-corner store, sometimes people have to drive many miles to get their healthy products. This is especially true for people who live in urban or inner-city areas. Farm markets are gaining more popularity these days, but they are still not as close as supermarkets. Supermarket fruits / vegetables look great, but rarely have good taste. c. Many people do not like the taste of fruits / vegetables : some people cannot cook them so that they are tasty, some people think that fruits / vegetables one can get in the grocery store look great, but taste horrible, some people do not have the time or desire to chop vegetables.

d. It is easier for many people to eat fast junk foods for lunch at work, than bring vegetables and fruits with them. The reason is that they have to spend extra time on shopping for those healthy foods and get up earlier to pack them. Therefore, many people find it more convenient to visit the nearest cafeteria and eat their usual not-so-healthy lunch. C. People are not educated enough about healthy eating.

Most of us grow up in a culture of sandwiches for lunch, washed down by a soda and finished by a cookie or a chocolate bar. Most American school cafeterias offer processed, high-fat, salty, sweet, etc. foods for lunch, which are very far from offering a healthy diet to children and teen-agers. Young people eat all this junk food since their early childhood and this is how their poor eating habits are formed for the rest of their lives.

Many adults are lazy to read labels on the packaging, even those who buy food for their children. 2. Transition: Solving a problem cannot happen without first facing it. Should each and every one of us honestly acknowledge that she / he is not living a healthy life, the solutions of how to change the situation will be found without a problem. We are creatures of habit and with little effort from our side, we can get used to eating and living healthy. 3. Solution: The healthy diet is a diet of well-balanced amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fats topped up with the sufficient amounts of vitamins and microelement's. a.

The best sources of carbohydrates whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans promote good health by delivering vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of important phyto nutrients. Easily digested carbohydrates from white bread, white rice, pastries, sugared sodas, and other highly processed foods may contribute to weight gain, interfere with weight loss, and promote diabetes and heart disease (web). b. Vegetable sources of protein, such as beans, nuts, and whole grains, are excellent choices, and they offer healthy fiber, vitamins and minerals. The best animal protein choices are fish and poultry. If you are partial to red meat, stick with the leanest cuts, choose moderate portion sizes, and make it only an occasional part of your diet (web).

c. Choose healthy fats, limit saturated fat, and avoid trans fat. Plant oils, nuts, and fish are the healthiest sources (web). d. Drink plenty of water. Our body is mostly water and we need to keep the needed amount of fluids for organs to function properly.

III. Conclusion 1. Visualization: Probably all of us have seen TV-shows that told the stories of people who had complete life make-overs and became happier after that. Most of those included exercising more, changing eating habits, loosing weight. The before and after images are always shown in these shows and most of us agree that the after is much better. This is just an analogy to help us understand what benefits healthy diet can bring us.

Almost certainly, if we only start a healthy life-style, we will then divide our life to before and after, and be much, much happier with the after part as well. 2. Action: America deserves to be a healthy nation. Health is only partially what we are born with, mostly it is acquired. We are responsible for our own health and if we need to improve it, we first of all, need to improve how and what we eat. What are we waiting for?
