Life is very short, and uncertain. Still it gives us enough chances to express our feelings to our near and dear ones. But we must not take life for granted and assume that the people around us are aware of how we feel about them. Life may not give us a second chance to think that we have not said I love you enough to the ones we love.
Uncertainty in life may knock our doors anytime and show its most cruel side. As is the case, most of the times, we are too busy in the daily chores of life that we do not express our true feelings to the ones we love. We tend to ignore the importance of making someone feel special. We realize it only when life gives us a big jolt. I learnt the lesson of life in a hard way. It was Valentines Day of 2001.
My cousins Fatah's roommate came running to our place and broke the news. My cousin had died peacefully in the morning. The news of my cousins death at the tender age of 27 shattered me into a million pieces. I was supposed to visit him that day. I had thought of telling him that he was the most special person in my life, my favorite in the family, and closer than even my own elder brother.
I wanted him to know my feelings before the doctors took him for bone marrow transplant. Fatah Barkhadle was detected with leukemia in June, 1994. He was treated for the disease as it was in his blood. Doctors had told him to quit smoking but he did not pay any heed and continued smoking. He was the liveliest person that I ever knew.
He never took life seriously. He always said that he wanted to live life to the fullest. He cared more for other people than for himself. The disease came back six years later. This time it was more chronic - it was in the bone marrow. Transplant was the only cure.
But still, he continued smoking. I worried for him. On the contrary, he was very encouraging and full of life. He believed that life was too short to make enemies or miss smiling even for a single day. I still remember speaking to him just before a day of his death. We had not met for three days and he missed me.
He wanted me to come over but I was distracted and assured him to meet the next day. That next day never came. What came was the news of his death. I regretted not meeting him when he had called me.
I regretted not giving him huge hugs or even telling him that I loved him. I always assumed that he knew - he knew that I loved him. I remembered what he always believed about life. One should always move on in life, without making enemies or worrying about things that you cannot change. You never know when life will take you.
One should never take it for granted that h / she has the rest of the life to do certain tasks. After this incident, I could never sleep peacefully. I would cry myself to sleep every night. My parents always told me to accept his death as death is certain for all of us. I had started questioning my own faith. One night, I dreamt of being happy in another world.
He told me that he was happy in the better world. That night I experienced the peace that I had lost with Fatah's death. He told me he knew that he was my favorite cousin. These words from Fatah gave me the faith that I had lost. Next morning, I woke up with the most tranquil feeling. I wondered how weak a human being is.
One moment he is very happy, very nest moment death shatters him to pieces and the person begins questioning the existence of ourselves. But death has a positive impact too. It gives us a chance to take a closer look at what our lives are and what are the most important things in our lives. We must understand that nothing lasts forever and that death can show its cruelest face anytime. We must not take life for granted. At the same times, we must not miss a single opportunity to say I love you to the people we really love and care for.
We must express our feelings at every chance that we get so that we do not have to regret not saying it when it is too late.
