Small-group is the nature of communication in social clusters of three to twelve individuals, which consists of a mixture of interpersonal communication. Patterns among members are predictable in terms of the "input-process-output" communication. Input factors exist before the group meets. Process factors occur during a meeting, and output factors result from the meeting. Interpersonal communication is key to maintaining a relationship, emphasizing positive and constructive communication patterns with frequent connections with one another. Interpersonal communication is key in all social interactions from employment relationships to personal relationships.
Ability to comprehend and communicate clearly greatly predicts success in life. After lunch, he returned her to her car where he told her he had to get back to work.
Tracey was really happy. She called her friend and told her about the wonderful man she just met. Tracey went back to work and tried to finish the project she was working on. She needed to get it finished and out in the mail. The phone rang.
It was John. He got tickets for a performance. Did she want to go? She put her work aside and got ready to out for the evening. She had a fabulous time, more fun than she had had in a long time. He seemed to be interested in her rather than the money she earned or her talents.
They were strangely compatible. Tracey had never felt such a strong attraction for a man. They had different interests, but they were compatible in temperament, emotionally, and truly cared for each other. Johns friends told her he had never loved another woman like he loved her.
Tracey left on a business trip. John called and wanted to know when she would be back in town. She had work to do in Florida and Louisiana. He wanted to come to Florida. With all the work she had to do, Tracey hoped he wouldnt.
He called her daily. He wanted to show her his house and the country club. He was so happy when she got back. They spent a few days together, then she went to North Carolina. It was nice to be with him and nice and necessary to be separate from him too.

When she finished reading her emails, she read some of his personal files. She knew she did not want to be with him. She was ready to go when he got back to take her to dinner. Johns family, actually his father, contributed the land to the country club, not John. The house he was so proud of was owned jointly with his siblings. Only John lives in it. John did get up early and leave for work every morning and definitely owned or maintained properties. He seemed to value money. His living room was several showcases of expensive objects.
His dining room was an office with a huge board of keys. A huge sofa and a large rear projection television were the only furnishings. The house was neat and cleaned, but he clearly valued money. Applying Ducks filters, Tracey believed Bruce gave John her email address.
She trusted John cued that he was a friend of Bruce. The pre-interaction cues led Tracey to meet John for lunch. The small group communication was each telling their friends and their friends validated the relationship, until she spoke to Bruce again and found out he had not given John her email address. She enjoyed being with him in the intensifying stage. There was less discussion in this phase and more social interaction.
He began to expect her to be there and she felt obligated to satisfy him. It seemed they begun the integrating phase of doing things together with a shared identity and the commitment level seemed to be friendship. The relationship did not meet the bonding level though it seemed that he expected some sort of business relationship in addition to the romantic relationship. Tracey's light blue slacks fit his daughter, and she could only guess what she did with her boom box.
She be-bopped into the room asking Tracey for a credit card to order some tickets for something she wanted to do. More often than not, relationships come together and come apart. In the Differentiation phase he says I have a repair to do, and she asserts the need to use the Internet. Each had an independent life the other was not aware of. Communication diminished when they began simply enjoying each others company and having fun together, but they became more familiar to each other on a personal basis. In the circumscribing phase they still enjoyed each others company, but they were only together in place and time they were not bonding or disclosing as they started to.
They looked like a couple or at least friends to observers. Avoiding may have been Tracey's need to be separate from John, and Johns leaving her alone in his house while he went and made a repair on his rental property. The conversation was superficial in the stagnating avoiding phase when they ate dinner together for the last time. The termination phase began when Tracey confronted him with the lie that Bruce had not given him her email address. At that point, possibly the relationship could have been salvaged, but disliking the confrontation he claimed he got it from an online dating service that she never belonged to. She did not need that!
After reading his files and getting more accurate on his background, Tracey terminated the relationship. She wondered why he contacted her. What were his true motives? Following the differentiating stage is the circumscribing stage. In the circumscribing stage, the primary focus of the relationship shifts from differences to setting limits and boundaries on communication between the two people. The communication becomes much shallower and the range of topics significantly decline.
